During the rosy years of elementary school(小学), I enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes, which allowed me to keep my high social status. I was the queen of the playground. Then came my tweens and teens, and mean girls and cool kids. They rose in the ranks not by being friendly but by smoking cigarettes, breaking rules and playing jokes on others, among whom I soon found myself.
Popularity is a well-explored subject in social psychology. Mitch Prinstein, a professor of clinical psychology sorts the popular into two categories: the likable and the status seekers. The likables’ plays-well-with-others qualities strengthen schoolyard friendships, jump-start interpersonal skills and, when tapped early, are employed ever after in life and work. Then there’s the kind of popularity that appears in adolescence: status born of power and even dishonorable behavior.
Enviable as the cool kids may have seemed, Dr. Prinstein’s studies show unpleasant consequences. Those who were highest in status in high school, as well as those least liked in elementary school, are “most likely to engage(从事) in dangerous and risky behavior.”
In one study, Dr. Prinstein examined the two types of popularity in 235 adolescents, scoring the least liked, the most liked and the highest in status based on student surveys(调查研究). “We found that the least well-liked teens had become more aggressive over time toward their classmates. But so had those who were high in status. It clearly showed that while likability can lead to healthy adjustment, high status has just the opposite effect on us.”
Dr. Prinstein has also found that the qualities that made the neighbors want you on a play date—sharing, kindness, openness—carry over to later years and make you better able to relate and connect with others.
In analyzing his and other research, Dr. Prinstein came to another conclusion: Not only is likability related to positive life outcomes, but it is also responsible for those outcomes, too. “Being liked creates opportunities for learning and for new kinds of life experiences that help somebody gain an advantage, ” he said.

You are a member in a full-time school called “life”. Each day here you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the lessons or hate them, but you have designed them as part of your curriculum.
Why are you here? What is your purpose? Humans have sought to discover the meaning of life for a very long time. What we and our ancestors have to overlook is that there is no one answer. The meaning of life is different for every individual.
Each person has his own purpose and distinct path, unique and separate from anyone else’s. As you are travelling your life path, you will be presented with numerous lessons you will need to learn in order to achieve that purpose. The lessons you are presented with are specific to you; learning these lessons is the key to discovering and achieving the meaning of your own life.
As you are travelling through your lifetime, you may meet challenging lessons that others don’t have to face, while others spend years struggling with challenges that you don’t need to deal with. You may never know why you are blessed with a wonderful marriage, while your friends suffer painful divorces, just as you cannot be sure why you struggle financially while your peers enjoy abundance. The only thing you can count on is that you will be presented with all the lessons that you specifically need to learn.
The challenge, therefore, is to arrange yourself with your own unique path by learning individual lessons. This is one of the most difficult challenges you will face in your lifetime, as sometimes your path will be different from others. But don’t compare your path with that of people around you and focus on the differences between their lessons and yours. You need to remember that you will only face lessons that you can learn and are specific to your own growth.
Our sense of fairness is the expectation of equality. Life is not, in fact, fair, and you may indeed have a more difficult life path than others around you, deserved or not. Everyone’s circumstances are unique, and everyone needs to handle his or her own circumstances differently.
8. According to the passage, how can the meaning of your life be realized?A.Gathering different opinions from others. |
B.Taking the distinct path from others. |
C.Learning the lessons presented to you. |
D.Doing the different things from others. |
A.everyone has his own track to follow |
B.unexpected things usually happen to the peers |
C.a painful divorce must lie in financial problems |
D.a wealthy man must have a wonderful marriage |
A.are beyond your power |
B.keep you from growth |
C.limit your development |
D.help you with your success |
A.All things should be equal and justice to everybody. |
B.You should learn to deal with specific problems differently from others. |
C.One has to fix his mind on unfairness of circumstances. |
D.You can complain life is unfair whenever possible. |
For many years, students had improved by answering questions and did best on the exam. But in the late 2010s, many students were doing more poorly on the exam than on the homework leading up to it. They would even ace the very first homework assignment, the one that quizzed them on material they had not yet learned. In 2008, only around 3 out of 20 students performed better on their homework than on the exam. But that share grew over time. By 2019, more than half of the students had performed this way.
What had changed over those years? One big thing was the rise of smartphones. They existed in 2008, but were not common. Now almost everyone carries one. So it would be easier today to quickly go online and find the answer to just about any homework question. But students can’t use phones during an exam. And that might explain why they aren’t doing as well on the tests.
The students who did better on their exams didn’t always report that they had come up with their own homework answers. And those who did better on their homework didn’t always say that they had copied. Coming up with answers on your own should lead to better learning for students at any age. If you find and then copy the right answer, you’re taking the easy way out. But that is wasting a valuable practice opportunity. It may take a few more minutes to think of an answer on your own, and then check to see if it’s right. But that’s the way you’ll learn more.
Now that information is easily available to everyone all the time, it probably doesn’t make sense for teachers to expect students to take quizzes and exams without it. From now on, we shouldn’t ever give a closed-book exam. Instead, teachers should come up with homework and exam questions that Google can’t easily answer. These might be questions that ask you to explain a passage you just read in your own words. Writing assignments and class projects are other great ways to encourage students to remember and apply their knowledge.
12. What does the underlined word “ace” in paragraph 1 probably mean?A.Do well in. | B.Put effort into. |

A.addiction to mobile games decreases students’ study grades |
B.online tutoring influences the regular classroom learning |
C.the modern technology reduces students’ motivation for learning |

How to choose your favourite books quickly
There are many interesting books available in libraries or bookstores, but sometimes people feel confused in finding a good book for them to read.
You can start to find out some books that are included in the top selling lists. Usually, those books are very good either in their contents or in the writing styles of the authors.
You can also ask some of your friends about their favorite books. You can ask them to tell you about the general contents of the books or about the writing styles. If you are interested in the books recommended by your friends, you can list them on your must-buy books. However, you should not ask the whole stories or contents of the books. Sometimes, getting more information of book contents might make you lose interest in those books.
Ask recommendations from salespersons. You can ask recommendations or opinions from salespersons in the bookstore.
It is quite easy, right? Now you should not worry about getting a good reading for your spare time anymore. You can easily get it by using those ways.
A.Ask your parents for help. |
B.Turn to your friends for advice. |
C.You can read the book in a glance. |
D.Tell them what kind of books you are interested in. |

Just before we got married, my husband, Spode, and I bought the house from the Gehards, who were moving to Australia. As they couldn't take much abroad with them, they left almost everything in the house to us, among which were two bookshelves packed with thick books. I liked the fine furniture, the tasteful kitchenware and even the pictures on the wall but I didn't think much of the books.
The day they handed over the house to us, we walked around in the house with the Gehards for the last time. They told us about the good times they had and the stories behind the objects in the house, giving me a sense of warmth of a family. When Mr. Gehard led us to the bookshelves, he said to us, "These are great books written by the great minds in human history. I hope you can read them. " Though Spode and 1 were not much of bookworms, we promised them we would, because we knew we could make Mr. Gehard feel better that way. We could see that it was hard for him to say goodbye to the house as well as the books, both of which he treasured so much.
After we moved in, to keep our promise to Mr. Gehard, Spode managed to find some time each day to read some pages of those great books. It was not typical of him, because he was one of those who would rather spend most of their spare time before screens. Curiously enough, as time went by, his interest in the books grew gradually and he began talking to me about what he read with amazement. To find out what accounted for his newly developed fondness for those serious-looking thick books, I also picked one up. Finally, we both found attachment to the books and made it a rule to read in the evenings. Reading became part of our life. Those books opened up new worlds for us, gave us new visions and enriched our life in many ways.

One evening as we were reading, a small piece of something fell onto the desk from between the pages of the book I was reading.
