I am not sure how many books I have reread, but perhaps it is fewer than the average person.
I used to take the same approach to books as I did to travel: don't go to the same place twice.Life is too short.
Recently I reread Joseph Heller's Catch-22.I was inspired to do so when reminded of how he'd respond when people rudely asked him why he'd never written anything as good:"Who has?"Catch-22 pretty much saved my life when I first read it.

【推荐2】How to Remember What You Read
How often have you read a book from start to finish, only to discover that you haven’t remembered very much of the information it contains? This can happen when you read whatever type of book.
Take note.
Highlight important concepts. Try to only highlight important and relevant information. For example, stress just a few key words on a page. Before you stress something, ask yourself, “Does this information satisfy my purpose of reading the material?”
Think in pictures. Creating mental pictures for the content you read will help you remember the content better than just reading the content without any mental images. Make mental pictures of important events, concepts or people.
A.If the answer is no, it is best not to stress it. |
B.Discuss the material with someone. |
C.You can rewrite the material. |
D.However, there is still room for improvement. |
E.Link new information to something you know. |
F.This is an especially helpful approach for visual learners. |
G.As you read, write down the relevant information. |

I’m a novelist and it’s obviously in my interest to encourage people to read. But there’s increasing evidence that reading isn’t just for pleasure, or merely a way of improving literacy skills and factual knowledge.
Firstly, reading helps to lengthen attention spans in children and improves their ability to think clearly.
Also, reading can help people learn to empathize(产生共鸣). A recent study at the University of Michigan found that there had been a 48% decrease in empathy among college students.
As a matter of fact, reading is far from a passive activity. Reading exercises the whole brain. When we read and imagine the landscapes, sounds, smells and tastes described on the page, the various areas of the brain that are used to process these experiences in real life are activated, creating new neural pathways.
Getting sucked into a good novel appears to be beneficial to our mental health too.
A.Stories have a structure that encourages their brains to think in sequence, to link cause, effect and significance. |
B.In other words, our brains model real experiences, just as if we were living them ourselves. |
C.When we read a good book, we’re trying to find out its main idea. |
D.It might actually be good for our mental and physical health too. |
E.But those who did not enjoy these activities had lots of loss. |
F.As the old saying goes, “ You’re never alone with a book.” |
G.Encouraging reading could overcome this. |
