After suffering years with a failing liver, Brenda learned that she would need a liver transplant (肝脏移植) to survive. She was only 21 years old. She wanted to live. And by all accounts, with a healthy liver, she could survive with a healthy liver. So, the doctors placed her on a liver transplant list hoping a donor (器官捐献者) would eventually appear. Brenda waited for a full year before she received the call from her doctor that a match had been found. Thankful that a donor liver had been found, Brenda planned her transplant surgery with great excitement.
But before the procedure was performed, she received another call from her transplant surgeon at Baylor. He told Brenda about a 23-year-old woman named Susan needed a liver transplant immediately, without which she would die within 24 hours. And most importantly, the liver that was a donor match for Brenda was also a match for Susan.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I occasionally allowed them to walk to and from school alone, if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend was different from any other friends they had brought home. With a yellowish coat and tiny brown spots dropped across her nose, she was the cutest puppy I had ever seen.
When my husband got home that evening, he recognized the breed——a beagle puppy (猎兔犬), not more than twelve weeks old, he guessed. She ran to him right away and after dinner climbed into his lap to watch TV. By now the girls were both begging me to keep her.
She had no collar or identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost-and-found but I really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely. I tried to find seemingly logical reasons to explain my behavior.
By the end of the week, she was part of our family. We had named the puppy Molly. She was very intelligent and good with the girls. This was a good idea, I thought. It was time for the girls to take responsibility for another life, so they would learn the nurturing skills they’d need if they decided to become mommies when they grew up.
The following week, something told me to check the lost-and-found section in the local paper. One particular ad jumped out at me and my heart pounded with fear at what I read. Someone was asking for the return of a lost beagle puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook.

Mrs. Smith was walking home after a long day at work when suddenly she saw her student Miguel in the street. The boy was sitting on a cardboard box with his homework spread out in front of him.
“Where are your parents?” she asked. She noticed the boy’s eyes well up. “We don’t even have a home,” he said. “We had lived with relatives who kicked us out a week ago.” He continued to explain that his parents were now living in a shelter and he didn’t have a desk or table to do his homework. It was also too noisy, so he did it on a cardboard box in the street. Mrs. Smith promised she’d make arrangements for him to study.
Mrs. Smith arrived at school early the next day and arranged a small desk for Miguel to do his homework in a room after school. When Mrs. Smith knew Miguel’s mother was deal and his father had no jobs, she told the school principal about Miguel’s story. The principal was moved and let Miguel’s parents work at the school cafeteria. Mrs. Smith even provided Miguel and his parents with shelter at her house since they didn’t have a proper home to live in. For Miguel’s family, Mrs. Smith had turned their lives around. Not only did she help them stand on their feet, she also gave them a roof over their heads.
Years passed, the 7-year-old Miguel grew up and he graduated from university. Miguel’s parents bought a department and left Mrs. Smith’s house. Last year, Mrs. Smith’s husband got involved in a false lawsuit (诉讼). They were on the brink of becoming homeless. Bythen, they had been retired, and their savings wouldn’t allow them to afford a lawyer. The poor woman was crying in a cafe, when she felt a reassuring tap on her shoulder. It was Miguel! “Oh, darling!” she shouted, throwing open her arms and embracing him. “How have you been?”
“I’m so good,” he said gratefully. “It’s all because of you. Why are you crying? May I ask if I can help you? ”The poor teacher told Miguel everything in tears.

“Here you go. Up, up and away,” Chrissy yelled, as she pushed her little brother, Russell, on the swing(秋千). Russell smiled and kicked his feet. “Higher! Higher!” he shouted. “Okay, hang on. Here you go!” Chrissy stood forward and gave the swing an extra hard push. “Help!” Suddenly, Russell screamed.
The swing flew so high that it seemed that it might go flying off into the sky. Russell started to cry just as their mom came running over. “I’m sorry, Russell,” Chrissy said. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I guess I pushed a little too hard.” Their mom was angry with Chrissy and shouted, “Was it a little too hard? That was way too hard, Chrissy! How could you be so irresponsible?” Hearing the word “irresponsible”, Chrissy cried with tears filling her brown eyes.
A week before, her teacher had told her that she was irresponsible for being late for class. And a few days before her dad had used the word “irresponsible” when he blamed her for not hanging up her clothes. “I’m sorry, Mom,” Chrissy said sadly. She turned away and started to walk slowly down the path that wound through the park. That unpleasant word “irresponsible” kept going through Chrissy’s head.
Suddenly, Chrissy saw a little girl walking across the grass, heading up a small hill. Chrissy looked around for the parent, but there was no one else in sight. Chrissy knew there was a running stream on the other side of that hill. “It’s dangerous,” Chrissy thought. She ran as fast as she could towards the little girl. When she reached the girl, she stepped in front her, stopping her from running towards the water.
Chrissy picked up the little girl and carried her towards the playground, looking anxiously for her mother. “Where’s your mommy?” she asked the little girl, although she thought the girl was probably too young to talk. She was surprised when the little girl pointed to a distant house on the other side of the fence.

I was in 6th grade, and I had a good friend named Stacey. We were not only in the same class but also shared a common love for learning and exploring. What’s more, Stacey and I even carried our own backpacks of the same style to spend our leisure time together, reading in the school library, singing under the tree and enjoying the beautiful sunshine in autumn.
One day, Stacey came to school with a new backpack, and I noticed three letters embroidered (刺绣) on it: SEK. I asked her what they meant.
“They are, of course, the first letters of my first name, my middle name, and my last name,” she explained proudly, “when I grow up, I might use my middle name instead of ‘Stacey’ and become ‘Elizabeth,’ or ‘Liz,’ or ‘Betsy’. The possibilities (可能性) made me very excited and each name seemed like a gateway to a different world.” I was a little jealous to hear that. Why didn’t I have a middle name.
For the first time, I thought about my own name: Claudine Gay. I thought about it for the rest of the day, and my confusion and resentment (怨恨) grew as I thought of the space between Claudine and Gay-the space where my parents had failed to give me a middle name. And I imagined all of the futures that were now out of reach as a consequence. I couldn’t see any possibility of myself.
Although I was just 11 years old at that time, I suddenly felt very painful that I was insufficient (缺失的). I felt as if everyone around me knew exactly what was going on.
I was not happy with my parents. When I faced them directly that evening, demanding to know why I did not have a middle name, they explained that each of them had given me half of my name. My mother, Claudette, gave me Claudine. My father, Sony, gave me Gay. They said calmly, “you are Claudine Gay. Your name is enough!”

My fear of performing started early on in my life. I was a shy child who preferred staying in the background and avoiding attention. However, as I grew older, I realized that I had a hidden desire to express myself creatively and share my talents with others. This desire led me to find out various art forms, including music, dance, and theater.
But I used to struggle with stage fright. Whenever I was asked to perform in front of others, I would feel a sense of dread (惧怕) and anxiety, and my body would tense up. I would worry about making mistakes, forgetting my lines, or embarrassing (使尴尬、难堪) myself in front of others.
I remember very well my first audition (试演) for a school play. The play was a musical adaptation (改编) of a classic fairy tale, and I was excited about the chance to be a part of it. However, as the audition day approached, my excitement turned into anxiety. I started to doubt myself, and I started to question whether I was ready to take on such a demanding (要求高的) role. Despite my doubts, I decided to go through with the audition, hoping to overcome my fear and prove to myself that I could perform.
The day of the audition arrived, and I stood nervously in front of the audiences. I could feel my heart racing and my palms sweating as I prepared to sing my song and deliver my lines.
However, as I started to perform, something excellent and unusual happened. I fully put myself in the role I was playing and felt a sense of freedom and joy that I had never experienced before. I began to lose myself in the moment, and didn’t feel nervous and anxious. When the audition was over, I was surprised to learn I had been chosen to play a leading role. I was both excited and worried at the same time, but I knew I had to push through my fear and give it my all.

I was easily moved to tears when saw a flm where the hero defeated the bad guy. I still choked up every time I watched the movie of Roger Bannister breaking the “impossible". I realized I was touched by witnessing men and women at their best. But they needn't be great men and women, doing great things.
I remembered vividly on a feezing night when my wife and I were going to dinner at a friend's house in New York. It was snowing heavily. As we hurried toward the house, with its welcoming light, I noticed a car pulling out from the pavement. Just ahead, another car was waiting to back into the parking space. But before he could do so another car came up from behind, and sneaked(偷偷驶入) into the spot. "It is rude and unacceptable." I thought.
While my wife went ahead into my friend's house, I stepped into the street to give the guilty driver a warming. A man rolled down the window."Hey," I said, "this parking space belongs to that guy." I gestured toward the man ahead, who was looking back angrily. I thought I was a hero at that moment. I felt manly in my new coat."Mind your own business!" the driver yelled at me."No," I protested. "you don't understand. That fellow was waiting to back into this space."
Things quickly heated up, until finally he jumped out of the car. My God, he was huge. He grabbed me and bent me back over the hood(引擎盖) as if I were a rag doll. I glanced at the other driver, crying for help. But he ignored me and drove off quickly. The huge man scolded me and hit me. I was terrified.
