Success looks different for everyone. For one person, it could mean getting a promotion or creating a better work-life balance.
But while making changes in your life can seem overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. You can do small things that have a huge impact on your quality of life. Check out three things you can do that will empower you to be more successful — on your own terms.
Set weekly and monthly goals.
Setting regular goals for yourself can keep you from getting stagnant(停滞不前的) in both your professional and personal life. The best way to keep track of your goals is to write them down. Jot them down on a whiteboard, a notepad on your desk, or an online calendar — anywhere you can see them regularly. (“Exercise three times this week”, for example, or
“Finish a big presentation.”)
Set aside time for yourself every day.
It’s easy to spend all your leisure time binge-watching(一口气看完) shows on Netflix or being addicted to social media. But when was the last time you tried something new that put you out of your comfort zone? In order to avoid getting bored, it’s important to break out of your comfort zone by finding fresh activities and passions.
A.Expand horizons and explore yourself. |
B.Change the way you network. |
C.It’s best to power down your devices at least an hour before you hit the sack(床) to ensure you sleep soundly. |
D.By having a constant visual reminder, you’ll be able to keep yourself going forward and measure your progress better. |
E.Someone else may want to improve their relationships or learn new skills. |
F.Too often, the workday speeds by in a nonstop scream of meetings, email, and deadlines. |
G.Fortunately, there are a number of ways to do this from volunteering to joining a sports league to learning a new language. |

When many of us take a vacation, more than anything, we seek to relax. We spend long, lazy days on a beach chair. But too often, we return home, very tired.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Come home refreshed after an active trip! And you won’t be too tired!
Active vacations are often the most relaxing ones of all. We don’t expect you to take up running. Rather, we ask the sedentary (久坐不动的) vacationers to spend two to four hours a day doing things, such as walking in city streets, going to a zoo or biking beside the ocean.
These kinds of activities aren’t just good for your physical health. They improve your mental (精神的) health as well. And they make vacations memorable and worthwhile.
Here are some fresh ideas to make your vacations as pleasurable as they are active and healthy.
◆A walk at dawn or dusk can make you feel or look young again. Try to make this a daily thing that is done regularly.
◆Don’t allow yourself to spend all your time sitting in front of the water.
◆Many of us spend a large part of our vacations on the road, either getting to and from our destinations (目的地), or using the car for sightseeing. But no matter how beautiful the scenery is, great memorable vacations don’t happen in a car seat.

On hold: Sick of hearing “For English, stay on the line”? Visit gethuman.com, a crowdsourced database that tells you the quickest way to beat the phone tree for more than 10,000 companies.
At the DMV: Start online, where most states allow you to take care of basic services remotely or at least schedule an appointment. Avoid visits at the end of the month, when most driver’s licenses expire (到期), and go before noon in the middle of the week.
At Disneyland: Arrive at least 30 minutes before the park opens, and start with the most popular rides; every minute you show up after the doors open becomes two extra minutes in line.
At the grocery store: Favor store that use a “serpentine line”—that is, a single long line that flows into several cash registers (e.g., the line at your local bank). Many Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods stores use this system, proved to be at least three times faster.
At airport security: Wait times tend to double every Friday afternoon from four to eight, but if you are a frequent traveler who cannot avoid rush hour, consider investing $100 in Global Entry. This U.S. Customs and Border Protection service makes you eligible for the TSA PreCheck line and allows you to skip the customs desk during international travel. Visitcbp.gov to apply.

The first thing is to decide what you want to read. Are you looking for a bestseller that will provide you with an enjoyable reading experience? Do you want an intellectually uplifting quality read? Have you decided on a novel or an essay?
A good option is to ask a good friend. Nobody knows you better than your friends and if they are readers, they surely will know how to recommend something that fits you.
The third one is to head over to your library.
For those who love the Internet above all things, it's better to check the lists of bestsellers in online stores or turn to blogs and websites specializing in literature.
If you still can't find a good book, you can always join a reading club. Book clubs have become fashionable and are wonderful for discovering new authors. In addition, you will have a place to talk with others about what you have read.

Another point in favor of health is that if you were healthy, you would be able to gain wealth.

Sometimes excited but mostly confused, embarrassed or even terrified, many foreigners have long complained about mistranslations of Chinese dishes. And their complaints are often valid, but such an experience at Beijing’s restaurants will apparently soon be history.
Foreign visitors will no longer, hopefully, be confused by oddly worded restaurant menus in the capital if the government’s plan to correctly translate 3,000 Chinese dishes is a success and the translations are generally adopted.
The government office of foreign affairs has published a book to introduce English translations of Chinese dishes, which aims to help restaurants avoid confusing translations. “It provides the names of main dishes of famous Chinese cuisines in plain English,” an official with the city’s Foreign Affairs office said. Restaurants are encouraged to use the proposed translations, but it will not be compulsory. It’s the city’s latest effort to bridge the culture gap for foreign travelers in China.
Coming up with precise translations is a daunting task, as some Chinese culinary (烹饪的)
techniques are untranslatable and many Chinese dishes have no English-language equivalent (对应词). The translators, after conducting a study of Chinese restaurants in English-speaking countries, divided the dish names into four categories: ingredients, cooking method, taste and name of a person or a place. For some traditional dishes, pinyin, the Chinese phonetic system, is used, such as mapo tofu (previously often literally translated as “bean curd made by woman with freckles”), baozi (steamed stuffed bun) and jiaozi (dumplings) to “reflect the Chinese cuisine culture,” according to the book.
“The book is a benefit to tourist guides like me. Having it, I don’t have to rack my brains trying to explain Chinese dishes to foreign travelers,” said Zheng Xiaodong, a 31- year – old employee with a Beijing-based travel agency.
It is not clear if the book will be introduced to other parts of China. But on Tuesday, this was the most discussed topic on weibo.com, China’s most popular micro blogging site.

A carbon footprint is the measure of influence our activities have on the environment, in particular climate change. It is calculated by the amount of greenhouse gas we produce in our daily lives. Fortunately, nowadays it is much easier to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices than, let’s say, 20 years ago. But one question has been on my mind a lot lately: is it better to buy new eco-friendly products or used traditionally produced goods?
After doing some research, I have decided that some things are better new and others are better used. Let me try to explain.
A carbon footprint is made up of two parts, the primary footprint and the secondary footprint. The primary footprint is a measure of our direct emissions (排放) of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the burning of fuels, including household energy consumption and transportation. The secondary footprint is a measure of the indirect CO2 emissions from the whole life cycle of products we use—those related to their production and breakdown.
Based on this understanding, we have a good deal of control and responsibility over our carbon footprint. Things like dishes, clothes and furniture fall into the “secondary footprint” group, so less is more and we can focus on finding used goods to avoid the added production. However, for the car and the other appliances (设备) that we need we can go with new, energy-saving models. I heard somewhere that electronics and appliances give off 90% of their carbon footprint after they leave the factory. So it seems most reasonable to go for the energy-saving models. The main concern here is the amount of energy that goes into the making of new products and whether or not that extra carbon is worth the footprint the product will make once it gets to you.
1. What do we know about the secondary carbon footprint?A.It is related to our consumption of fuels. |
B.It is made when we are buying the products. |
C.It is less harmful than the primary carbon footprint. |
D.It is counted as ours though not directly made by us. |
A.Using second-hand textbooks. | B.Using old and expensive cars. |
C.Buying new but cheap clothes. | D.Buying new wooden furniture. |
A.making the product. | B.recycling the product. |
C.using the product. | D.transporting the product. |
A.What appliances to buy to save energy. |
B.What a carbon footprint means in our life. |
C.How to make eco-friendly lifestyle choices. |
D.How to identify different carbon footprints. |
