Nancy’s heart felt heavy as she stood in the sad crowd. The words spoken by the priest (牧师) filled the air—saying goodbye to her beloved son, Matthew. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she couldn’t fully grasp the gravity of the moment. How could she accept that her only son was gone, a victim of a drunk driver’s careless driving?

As the funeral (葬礼) service progressed, Nancy struggled to focus on the words being spoken. The pain of loss saddened her, leaving her feeling empty. It seemed that no one else could truly understand the depth of her sorrow. While others would move on with their lives, Nancy knew that she would forever be changed.

Suddenly, Nancy’s attention was drawn to a young boy standing near another freshly dug grave (墓穴). Tears streamed down his face, and he appeared lost and alone. Both were experiencing the cruel loss of a beloved family member. The same fate created an instant connection.

A silent promise formed in Nancy’s heart as she made a decision to approach the boy. She understood the need for comfort during times of sorrow, especially for a child who had been left to go through the painful journey alone.

As the ceremony drew to a close, people offered their support to Nancy, but their words seemed distant. After all her relatives and friends left, she approached that grave. On the tombstone was a name: Marianne. Next to it lay a photograph of a young woman about her age. All of a sudden, Nancy realized what had happened to the boy: his mother passed away recently.

9-year-old Igor lived in a huge forest in the north of Russia. His father was a woodcutter and his mother a tailor. The boy liked playing with animals in the forest, and knew the names of different birds and their songs. One freezing winter Igor was seriously ill and the doctor from big cities told his parents that only surprise could save him. Lying all day in bed, Igor only wanted his father to catch a bird and played with it. But in winter there were no birds in the forest. “You could make him a bird out of wood,” suggested the anxious mother.

The first finished birds were fat and too heavy to fly. He threw them into the fire, head in hands.

It was snowing heavily, and he really didn’t know where to find a bird. Then an idea occurred to him, “The bird needs two pieces of wood.” Eventually, he made it and showed it to his wife. “Beautiful!” she said, taking a needle and some thread (细线) and sewing the two ends together, like a real bird. She tied a long thread to the bird’s back. And it could be hung above Igor’s bed. Quietly, the woodcutter hung the bird above the boy’s bed.

At daybreak, his son was watching the bird carefully. There was a light in his eyes for the first time in many weeks. “Beautiful!” said Igor. “I’ve never seen it before in the forest. What’s its name?” “That’s a good question. I’ll find out and tell you.” The next morning, when the father entered Igor’s room, he found the boy sitting up in bed, trying to touch the bird. The last time Igor sat up in bed was many weeks before. “What’s it called?” the boy asked. “Oh, dear, I’m still not sure.”

Late on that night, Igor’s father went into his son’s room quietly and made the thread a little shorter. Then the bird was hanging a little higher above Igor’s head. Three days later, he found Igor kneeling on the bed, trying to touch the bird. His hand was very near it. “Have you decided on the name?” “Not yet. My son.” his father replied.

Mr Swales was talking about what people do, and wanted to find out what his students wanted to be when they grew up. Mr Swales was about to call on Jodie when the girls in the back row burst out laughing.

Shirley yelled, “Jodie’s daddy is a garbageman! Pee-yoo!” Everybody in the class laughed out loud except Jodie. She felt her face turn bright red. She looked around the whole classroom. Everyone was laughing. Some kids were even holding their noses. Mr Swales was angry. He almost never raised his voice, but now he did.

“Silence! I want everybody quiet this instant.”

The laughter stopped immediately. “You should be ashamed of yourselves,” Mr Swales said. “Being a garbageman, I mean, a sanitation engineer, is a difficult and extremely useful job. We should all be grateful to Mr Harris. Where would we be without him? Up to our ears in garbage, that’s where. How would you like that?”

“Pee-yoo!” somebody said. A few kids started laughing again.

“It’s not funny,” Mr Swales went on. “Garbage is a serious matter. I think you all owe Jodie an apology. And after that, you’re all going to write Jodie’s father, Mr Harris, a nice letter to tell him how much you appreciate what he does for all of us.” Everybody moaned (抱怨). Everyone said sorry to Jodie, but Jodie could tell they didn’t really mean it.

Her face was burning red and she felt like crying.

Mr Swales came to her and said, “Let’s go out in the hall, so we can have a private talk.” Jodie couldn’t hold back any more. She started crying out in the hall. “I’m sorry this happened,” he said. “But remember, hard work done well is something to be proud of. There’s nothing wrong with being a garbageman… a sanitation engineer, absolutely not.”

Wrapping paper flew everywhere as Cali opened her gift. Then, a pair of shining skates caught her eyes! Cali thanked her uncle and aunt but looked embarrassed. She didn't know how to skate.

Aunt Lisa, who seemed to have read Cali's mind, told her not to worry and that learning skating was fun, while Uncle George promised to take her to the ice rink(溜冰场)and teach her to skate.

Cali wasn't sure. Sometimes she had a hard time learning new things. She looked again at the skates and imagined herself skating on the ice cheerfully. It should be fun! Then she nodded, "Let's do it!"

The next day all of them went to the skating rink. Cali's eyes twinkled in excitement when watching the other skaters around her. She sat down on the bench and put on the skates. Uncle George then placed her helmet on and fastened it.

"Time for us all to hit the ice!" her uncle said, "we will hold your hands and you stand between us." Cali did so and made her first step onto the smooth ice.

"Whoa! This is slippery!" Cali nearly fell over, but her aunt and uncle pulled up on her arms and she found her balance again. She grinned and tried taking a few steps. Her legs wanted to slide out in front of her, so she made her steps smaller. That seemed to help.

"Good, Cali. Now try to glide on one foot for just a second longer on each foot as you walk," suggested Aunt Lisa. Then Uncle George skated in front of her while Lisa guided her from behind.

"Skate to your uncle now," she said, pushing her on the back a little to get more speed. Cali glided unsteadily towards her uncle, taking small steps and holding her arms wide for balance. Her uncle caught her and gave her a hug.

"Well done, Cali!" he said. "Now try it on your own." Cali wasn't too sure. Everyone else was rushing past her. Skating seemed easy for them. She started to get nervous. She lost her balance.
