A smile shows that a person is happy. For example, a person may smile when he or she is pleased with a grade on a test. Or a person might smile if a friend tells a funny joke. People smile for many different reasons. But smiles are more than just a way for people to show that they are happy.     1

First, it is easier to smile than to show unhappiness. In fact, it only takes 17 muscles (肌肉) to smile. On the other hand, it takes 43 muscles to show unhappiness.     2

Second, smiles are nice. People may try to look nice on the outside by exercising or wearing nice clothes. As the famous saying goes, “    3    ” That is because it is easy to be around someone who is smiling and happy. Almost no one wants to be around someone who is unhappy all the time.

Third, smiles have power.     4     If one person smiles, people around him or her want to smile, too. Similarly, when a person laughs, people tend to laugh with them. If a person is sad, the best thing to do is sharing a smile or laugh. It is the easiest (and cheapest) way to cheer someone up.

5     Even if you are mad or sad, try smiling. You’ll find that it will be hard to stay mad or sad for very long!

【推荐2】My mother is cool — much cooler than most people. I give her full credit for making me the person who I am today. To thank her, I'd like to share some of the things she taught me.

1.     1

No matter how hard things got, my mom could always joke about them. It has taught me things are never, ever, end-of-the-world kind of bad. I'm sure this has made me a more relaxed person.

2.     2

My mother made her own clothes she felt like wearing. Soon enough, people asked her to make clothes, and it turned into a full-time business. That shows me how you can set up your own business by expressing yourself truthfully.

3.     3

As a creative, my mother always encouraged us to do imaginative things for enjoyment and discouraged TV. We dressed up in costurnes, drew pictures, and sang at the top of our lungs. Today, I am a very fun person to be with.

4.     4

My mom has always pushed me towards becoming independent. Not for her good, but for mine. I made my own decisions without her trying to manage me. Because of this, I grow up to be completely independent.

文章大意:本文讲述了愤怒是一种常见的甚至是健康的感觉,但重要的是要以正确的方式处理它。文中给出了管理愤怒的方法。

【推荐3】Are you mad when someone cuts you off in traffic? Does your blood pressure rocket when someone says bad things about you? Anger is a common and even healthy feeling. But it’s important to deal with it in a right way.     1

Ready to get your anger under control? Start by considering the following anger management tips.

♦Think before you speak. In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say something you’ll later regret.     2

♦Find ways to solve the problems. Instead of centering upon what made you mad, work on solving the problem at hand. Does the noise your little brother makes make you upset and angry? Close the door. Are your family late for dinner every night? Have meals later in the evening.     3     Try to be realistic about what you can and cannot change. Remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything and might only make it worse.

4     Breathe deeply, imagine a relaxing thing or repeat a calming word or phrase such as ‘Take it easy” when you are angry. You might also listen to music, draw a picture, write something or play a game — whatever it takes to encourage relaxation.

5     Kindness is a powerful tool. If you allow anger and other bad feelings to crowd out good feelings, you might find yourself surrounded by your own pain. Being kind to someone who angered you might help you both learn from the situation and strengthen your relationship.
