Raden likes her job. Each weekday, Raden rides her three-wheeler (三轮车) with books at the back to the village. There, many children are waiting to exchange books with old cups, bags and other useless things. When she arrives, the children gather around her three-wheeler, the “Litter Library”, and the books fly out quickly. Raden collects about 100 kg of waste each week. She has more than 6,000 books to lend and plans to go to more places, too.
Raden’s project is a new way to make the kids read more. She is happy that it will take the kids more time to read books than to play online games as a result. She thinks that it can help build a culture of reading from young age.
The project is also a way to clean up the environment. It can help to take care of the waste to fight climate (气候) change and to make the earth safe. Kevin is a reader of the “Litter Library”. He’s 11 years old. He often looks for waste lying in the village. “When there is too much waste, our environment will become dirty and it’s not healthy. That’s why I look for waste to borrow a book,” he says.
More and more people realize that it’s important for kids to read and protect the environment. That must be good news to Raden.

He spent most of his youth working in the fields, picking fruits and vegetables. As a kid, Hernandez didn’t get a good education. But Hernandez dared to dream big. When he was ten, he decided to be an astronaut after watching the Apollo spacewalks on television. The dream might seem out of reach, but he went for it anyway.
In high school, Hernandez was already interested in science and engineering. So he studied electrical engineering in college and he got his master’s degree in engineering later. After he finished studies, he worked in a laboratory and then began to apply for (申请) astronaut training.
However, the road to becoming an astronaut was not easy. He was refused by NASA (美国国家航空航天局) many times. “NASA refused me not once, not twice, not three times but 11 times. It wasn’t until the 12th time that I got accepted,” he said. Hernandez finally joined NASA in 2004. In 2009, he flew into space, spending 14 days traveling around the earth. He made his dream of becoming an astronaut come true.
Now Hernandez is no longer an astronaut, but he hopes to encourage kids to reach for the stars. He started Reaching for the Stars, an organization that helps children develop an interest in science, technology engineering and math. His message to kids: “Hard work, perseverance and not being afraid to dream big.”

2. Where did Hernandez work after he got his master’s degree?
3. How many times was Hernandez refused by NASA before he was finally accepted?

Thanksgiving is always on a Thursday. The day after it has been known as Black Friday. It is the start of the holiday shopping season, and it has been the busiest shopping day of the year in the US since 2005.
Most stores offer big sales on Black Friday. They open their doors quite early in the morning. They try to attract shoppers with big discounts (打折). Some items (商品)like TVs and cloths are much cheaper than usual. Stores may even lose money on these items. They hope that shoppers will buy gifts for other people while they are in the store.
Black Friday is a great time to go shopping. However, there are problem. The biggest one is that there are not enough low-priced items. Each store may only have a few. These items are in great need, so people stand in long lines to get them. They may wait three to four hours before a store opens. They may be hoping to get a low price on a TV or computer, but not everybody can get one. Some people leave, disappointed.
The situation makes people worried. Some Black Friday events have been crazy. There have been fights over toys among shoppers. Some workers have even been hurt by large crowds. But most Black Friday events are safe and fun. Still, if you plan to go, you will expect large crowds and a bit of pushing.
So where does the name “Black Friday” come from? It was first used in Philadelphia in the 1950s. The police called this day Black Friday because of the heavy traffic it caused. In the 1960s, stores tried to rename the day “Big Friday”. It did not stick. The name “Black Friday” continued to spread across the country. It seems that it is here to stay.
Now people all over the country take part in Black Friday events. It is even spreading to other parts of the world. Stores have held Black Friday events in the UK, Australia, and Brazil since 2012. In Mexico, stores offer a weekend of discounts every year. They call it “El Buen Fin”, which means “the good weekend” in Spanish. I guess people everywhere like to buy things on sale.

Chinese people born before 1985 generally think that foreign brands are better than Chinese ones, billionaire William Li told Business Insider during a recent interview on CCTV 9. But for who were born after 1985, it is a different picture.
“When I first went to the United Kingdom in 1997, I thought that the difference between China and Europe was quite big,” Li said. “But for those born in the 1990s, when they visit Europe or the US, they do not think there is a big difference.”
The change in thinking among Chinese buyers is showing up in many markets in China where western companies used to control. A study by Credit Suisse published in March found that young Chinese buyers are increasingly showing a home brand bias.”
More than 90% of young Chinese buyers would prefer to buy home appliance brands, according to the study. Meanwhile, home companies producing food, drinks, or personal care products increased their share of the market by 3.3% over the last ten years to nearly 70%.
“Chinese buyers, especially the younger ones, don’t just believe that foreign brands are better. Right now, Chinese buyers think China is good and ‘Made in China’ is not bad at all,” Charlie Chen, head of China buyer research at Credit Suisse, told South China Morning Post in March.
The Chinese smartphone market is controlled by home companies—Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Apple is the only foreign brand in the top five, but it has lost large ground to the home brands in recent years. Its market share is believed to be down to 37% from a 2015 high of 54%.

Today, London is much cleaner but there is a new problem: smog from cars. In December 1991, there was very little wind in London and pollution was much worse. As a result, about 160 people died from pollution in just four days.
Part of the problem is the new “out of town” shopping centers. In the past, people often walked to shops near their home or went by bus. Now, many people drive to the new shopping centers. As a result, the small shops have been closed and more people have to travel to do their shopping.
Many people think that Britain needs better and cheaper public transport (交通). Transport in Britain is very expensive. An early morning train trip from Glasgow to London (about 600km) can cost about 100 pounds, for example. A short 15-minute bus trip can cost over 1.00 pound.
Many people are trying to cut the use of cars in Britain. Some cities now have special bicycle paths and many people cycle to work. Some people also travel to work together in one car to make less the pollution and the cost.

On May 30, 2023, China’s Shenzhou-16 spacecraft flew to its space station. Among the three astronauts, a new face has got a lot of attention. He is Gui Haichao (桂海潮), a professor (教授) at Beihang University.
Born in 1986 in Shidian, Yunnan Province, Gui grew up in a common family. When he was in primary school, he was known for asking lots of questions. There were only a few books available to him in the village school, but he spent much of his free time exploring (探索) the unknown world in the books.
In high school, Gui was always the first to arrive at the classroom in the morning to study and the last to leave at night. His interest in aerospace (航天航空) began at the age of 17. That year, Shenzhou-5 was successfully sent into space and Yang Liwei became China’s first astronaut in space. Gui studied even harder. Two years later, he entered Beihang University to learn aircraft (飞行器) design and engineering.

Wang Xiangjun is the first blind (失明的) student to take gaokao in Anhui. She went to a music college in Tianjin in 2015. It’s never an easy thing for blind people to do.
Wang was blind when she was born. At the age of eight, she started to learn to play the piano. The first problem for Wang was to find the keys. She had to listen to the melody (旋律) again and again, keep it in mind and then practice playing it over and over again. She worked very hard and played better and better. Music made her confident (自信的) and happy.
“Many kind people have helped me over the past years. I wish to pass (传递) on the love to more blind children by working as a teacher,” said Wang after she finished college in 2019.
Her dream came true soon. She became a piano teacher in the Hefei Special Education Center that year. Now Wang lives a busy but happy life. “All of my students are so lovely. I know their difficulties in learning. I can teach them with my experience and let them know there is hope and a good future.” Said Wang.

Sometimes even the best friends have fights. They disagree with each other and begin to argue. Sometimes they even stop talking to each other.
What can be done to help the two friends make up? Finding a good friend who knows about both of them very well to be a peacemaker is a good way. Maybe one day you will be a peacemaker for your good friends. Here are some useful communication strategies for you to use:
◆ State your feelings clearly but don't criticize them. Begin with “I feel…” instead of “You always…”
◆ Don't stop the other person's sentences.
◆ Listen carefully to what the other person is saying. Try to see the other person's side of the disagreement.
◆ Look at the other person's eyes when you are talking.
◆ Ask questions to make sure that you understand the other person.
◆ Repeat the other person's ideas as you understand them.
◆Never put anyone down. Saying things like “You're stupid.” makes communication difficult.
Try to find a solution that makes the two friends happy. Never decide who is right and who is wrong. Instead, help them to find their own “winwin” solution. A “winwin” solution allows both of them to feel good. In this way, their friendship can be continued.

If your teacher writes notes on the blackboard, that's great. You can copy them or write down the most important facts of all in class.Different teachers do things differently. For example, some teachers may focus on (关注) lots of dates and facts in class, but they only write the important ones on the blackboard.Other teachers may not write anything down, but they may repeat them.
Don't try to write down every word in class, or you might miss some important points. Some students really learn better with the help of these notes.Don't be afraid to ask your teacher to repeat what you've missed. If your teacher speaks too fast and you can't follow what he is saying, you can ask him after class.
Comparing your notes with your classmates' can be good for your learning. It can also help you and your classmates correct some mistakes.
Note-taking also needs organization.Keep notes for each subject in one place, so that you can find everything easily when a test comes.
