Flynn Garry, a l5- year-old boy, is known as “the country's hottest chef(厨师)”
Garry started cooking four years ago. Before he tried cooking at home, he read some cookbooks and surfed the Internet. He thought he could do it. Garry said, "Every time I try it, I hope to get better and better, I just love cooking.”
Garry said he could cook, also partly thanks to his mum. His mum didn't really like cooking, and when she did cook, he didn’t like her food, so he decided to try something simple.
Within a year, he has produced most of the dishes in the cookbook and was ready for a bigger plan. “I wanted to create my own dishes and I started cooking for more people than just my family too. Soon he could really create more complicated(复杂的) dishes of his own. At that moment, the real" I want to be a chef" dream came into his mind.
Now Garry and his mother set up Eureka, a super club business that organizes monthly events inside his home. Garry, who has also cooked in top-class restaurants around the US, says he's not doing it for the money, but because he loves cooking. "At the point in your life where you stop caring if you're going to be famous or do well, your dream will come to you. I did something with my heart and people can see it. Long time ago, there were two special boys in town, John and Joey. They showed great talents from an early age, and they did better than others around.
They grew up but they chose different ways. John used all of his talents to find a good job. He joined in many activities and visited the most important people and places. Nothing was more important than himself in his eyes. He always tried to make his voice heard. Everyone thought that he would play an important role in town at first. But the second young man, Joey, was different. He always took a heavy responsibility (责任). He thought he should help others. He was always ready and busy looking for ways to help others.
Time would tell. One day, some bad things happened (发生) in town. John didn’t care about these things and did nothing. But Joey tried his best to think of some good ways to solve the problems and didn’t let the bad things affect (影响) the people in his town. From then on, he was more famous than John. More and more people came to Joey and asked him for help. Of course, they were always there when Joey needed help. Our words carry huge weight. They may influence people for years, and even for a lifetime. They provide them with courage to go on or one more reason to give up.
When I was fourteen, my family moved to another city. Junior high was always a difficult time for me, and the move made my ninthgrade year even harder. I remember walking into the dining hall for the first time. The other kids had good friends with them, but I didn't know anyone. I felt lonely and went to the nearest seat after getting some food. The kids beside me looked at me up and down and then laughed. I could feel my face turning red at that moment. Then one of the kids broke the ice. “Man!You have one BIG nose!” I felt hurt and didn't know what to say. I wanted to cry, but I managed a little smile—as it didn't hurt me at all. But it did. From then on,I would often look at myself in the mirror. I studied the big nose closely. It seemed that I was just living for my nose.Thankfully, I grew out of this influence finally. But it really took me twenty years.
There is another thing that kept deep in my mind. I remember going through a terrible business failure. I lost everything. I called my dad for help and he told me a lot about how to deal with the failure. What he said gave me a lot of courage and confidence to go on with my business.

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.
1. Why did the writer check the phone more often than before when he was terribly tired out?2. What changes did the writer have after three weeks without a mobile phone?
3. (开放性设问)Would you like to follow the writer’s example? Why or why not? (Please give two reasons.)
Gan Yu and Luo Yong are the workers of a hydro power station(水电站). When a 6.8-magnitude earthquake hit Luding County in Sichuan Province on September 5, they chose to stay and save people’s lives.
They climbed up to the dam(水坝) and opened two floodgates to let the rising water out. It saved the lives of hundreds of villagers. Then Gan and Luo realized the generator(发电机) was still on. It was a huge risk, so they rushed to turn off the station that day without eating any food.
The next day, they moved out together to save themselves. Gan is nearsighted. Unluckily, he lost his glasses and got too weak to walk on. He asked Luo to leave first and he would stay where he was and wait for help.
Before parting from Gan, Luo found some dry leaves to help Gan stay warm. He also left some wild fruits, bamboo shoots and other food. Luo was rescued(营救) on September8, but Gan was no longer at the place when a rescue team arrived.
On September21, Gan was finally found by a local farmer named Ni Taigao. Ni’s village is at the foot of the mountain. After knowing that the people were looking for Gan, he joined the search. He set out for the mountain early that day. Two hours later, he heard Gan’s weak cries for help. He soon found him lying on the ground. Later that day, other rescuers arrived and took Gan to the hospital.
The whole rescue has been called a “miracle(奇迹) of life”. Luo Yong, Gan Yu and Ni Taigao are all heroes.

It was 3:30, and his parents worked until 6:00 p.m. Robert looked at his apartment on the eighth floor. He saw an open window. He closed his eyes and pictured himself climbing the building. When he opened his eyes, he told himself, “I can do it.” A quarter of an hour later, he was in his house, and his fear of heights was gone.
Today, Robert (known as the French Spideman) still climbs buildings. In 2004, he climbed Taipei 101(the tallest building in the world at the time), and in 2011 he climbed the Burj Khalifa Tower in Dubai. To reach the top of a building, Robert usually uses only his hands and special shoes. To climb the Burj Khalifa Tower, though, he was made to wear safety ropes.
Robert climbs as a hobby. He also does it to make money for charity( for children and the homeless). Climbing is his passion. Although many climbing accidents have left him seriously disabled, he has become one of the best solo climbers in the world. Alain says in an interview, “We set ourselves limits, but we are all strong enough to aim higher, to achieve our goals. All we have to do is find such strength within ourselves.”
When Robert climbs, he wants to send a message to people. If you have a dream—something you really want to do—it can become real. But you must be brave and keep trying. If something bad happens, don’t give up. Close your eyes and tell yourself, “I can do it.”

Tim Burton is one of the most famous American film directors. His most popular films include: Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Batman Returns (1992)and Dumbo (2019). In 1990, he got a Daytime Emmy Award for his cartoon series Beetlejuice and in 1991 he got a Hugo Award for Edward Scissorhands.
Tim grew up watching horror films and cartoons. He read Edgar Allan Poe’s horror stories and he loved drawing. He also made short films in his back garden. After leaving school, Burton studied animation. Then, he got a job at Walt Disney Studios. He was a very good animator, but he didn’t draw in the Disney style. So he left Disney and started to make his own films.
One of his most successful films is Batman. At first, people were upset when Tim Burton chose the comedy actor Michael Keaton to play Batman. Batman is a superhero who is taller and stronger than ordinary men, and Michael Keaton was too short. At 1.75 m, he was in fact the shortest actor ever to play Batman. However, the film was very successful and everybody loved Michael Keaton as Batman.
One of Tim Burton’s most interesting characters is Edward Scissorhands. The idea for the character came from a drawing that Burton made in high school. Edward isn’t human and he has got scissors instead of hands. In the film, Johnny Depp plays Edward. However, his character in the film is not as scary as Tim Burton’s original drawing.
In one of his latest films, Dumbo, Dumbo the elephant has got bigger ears than the other elephants and they laugh at him. However, his big ears are an advantage. He can fly. This new film is more exciting than the old Disney film, but the CGI elephant is not as cute as the cartoon elephant in the 1941 film. There are some changes in the plot, but the new film is still as sad as the old one.
Tim Burton has directed many other films, including some of the best-loved children’s stories like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. He still produces films today, and sometimes he shows some of his drawings and cartoons at exhibitions around the world.

He looked in every room, and shouted “Happy New Year” to every one of his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat it to those he met. When he came back, his father gave him two new dollars. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some nice books.
As he ran down the street with a light heart to the bookshop, he saw a poor German family—the father, mother and three children walking in the cold wind.
“I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man shook his head. “You do not belong to this country?” asked Edward. The man shook his head again, because he could not understand or speak English. But he pointed to his mouth, and to the children, he seemed to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly understood that these people were poor and in trouble. He took out his dollars and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife. They said something in their language, which meant, “Thank you very much, and we will remember you forever.”

I was still a thief when I met Romi. He was watching a wrestling match when I approached him. He looked kind and simple enough for my purpose.
“Hi, I’m Hari. You look a bit of a wrestler yourself.” There’s nothing like flattery to break the ice! Then we talked a lot about the wrestlers. When he walked away, I gave him my most appealing smile, “I want to work for you and you only need to feed me.”
Romi took me to his house. It was quite nice working for him. I bought the day’s supplies, making a profit of two or three dollars. I think he knew I made a little money this way, but he didn’t seem to mind. He taught me to write my name and said he would soon teach me to write whole sentences.
One evening, Romi came home with some notes and put them under the mattress. Well, it’s time I got down to some real work.
Romi was sleeping peacefully. I drew the notes out of the mattress without a sound and moved quickly out of the room to catch the 10:30 train.
When I reached the station, I should have jumped into the train, but I hesitated for some reason. I can’t explain and I lost the chance to get away.
I had no idea where to go. I had no friends. The only person I knew really well was Romi. He must be sad when he discovered the theft—not for the loss of money, but for the loss of trust.
The night was cold and a shower of rain added to my discomfort. I felt for the notes, they were soaked through.
Romi’s money. In the morning, he would probably have given me five dollars to go to the movies, but now I had it all: no more cooking, or learning to write sentences.
Sentences! I had forgotten about them. Writing complete sentences, I knew, could one day give me more than a few hundred dollars. It was a simple matter to steal. But to be a really big man, was another thing. I should go back to Romi, if only to learn to read and write.
The next morning, when I woke up, Romi handed me a note—fifty dollars! My heart sank.
“I made some money,” he said. “Now I can pay you regularly.”
My spirits rose. But when I took the note, I noticed that it was still wet from the night’s rain.
“Today we’ll start writing sentences,” he said.
I smiled at Romi in my most appealing way.

This spring break, I had the chance to go on one of these trips, and it was the best week during my life. I went with 12 other students and two partners down to Rocky Mount, North Carolina in the US. We worked on three houses, building roofs, painting, landscaping(造园林), and shingling(盖瓦).
It was very rewarding to see how much we were truly appreciated(欣赏) by the people living in that town. Every time we went out somewhere for dinner, we had people come up to show their thanks. This made us feel really good and encouraged us to get more done each day.
The trip wasn’t all about work, however, we had an amazing group of people who enjoyed another’s company.
We created our own fun, this helped us get to know each other well. By the end of the trip, I came home with not only a great sense of fulfillment(充实) but also 14 really good new friends.
