Each and every year, during Chongyang Festival, citizens of China celebrate the elders in their families and communities. It’s a special tradition which is rooted in the deep value that Chinese culture places on honoring their elders.
Sadly, many of our aging population are seniors without sons, daughters or grandchildren to visit. While they may have great friends, they no doubt miss the tender and loving relationships unique to families. To fill this void(空虚), many volunteers turned up on October 28 at nursing homes around the country in order to spend time with the residents. In some cases, they performed humble(谦逊的) gestures of kindness, such as combing their hair or washing their feet.
While the kind acts were appreciated, one embarrassing story out of Anhui province raised a valuable question. Reportedly, one old gentleman had his feet washed seven times during the day by different volunteers. Is this genuinely(真诚地) caring for the elderly? Many of the residents at the home said that those gestures do not make them feel cared for at all. Their family members or community volunteers may drop by for a few hours of token time, but soon they disappear back into their busy lives.
There is nothing we can give that is more valuable or appreciated than our time. While you may feel like there is barely enough time to care for your many responsibilities, might it be possible to spare just a moment as you walk home from school to sit with a senior who lives in your community? Just five minutes is not going to prevent you from getting your homework done, but it may totally change a day of loneliness into a day of joy for one old man or woman. Do you live far from your grandparents? Why not pick up the phone and let them know you’ re thinking of them? Or maybe you could remind them of the “good old days” and mail them a short letter. Imagine their surprise and joy!
We live in a complicated(复杂的) and busy world, but kindness and caring is still a very simple thing.

Diwali is the biggest festival in India and people celebrate it all over the world. It is a magical time for children because of the lights. We light candles and lamps(灯), called "diyas", in our homes. All the streets, houses and shops are decorated with lights. Diwali comes from the Sanskrit (梵语) word "Deep-awali" which means "rows of lights".
On the morning of Diwali, I go to the temple with my family. On this occasion, we get dressed in our best clothes. My grandmother always buys me a new sari(纱丽) to wear for Diwali every year. We spend a long time getting ready, putting on bright clothes and jewellery. Lots of our friends come to the temple and we sing, dance and enjoy ourselves. My cousin play's an Indian instrument called harmonium (小琴) at the temple. There are always delicious sweet foods to eat. Back at my uncle's house, we exchange presents and eat lots of good Indian food. Many relatives come over to celebrate with us and it is a very special time for families.
Every- year, Diwali falls in October or November. Not only in India, but also in Asian countries, Diwali is celebrated with great joy and happiness.

Car Free Day encourages drives to give up their car for a day to protect the environment.
People from around the world get together in the streets to remind the world that we don't have to accept the society full of cars. It was first started by 34 cities in France and September 22 is Car Free Day. The first Car Free Day in China was in Chengdu in 2001. The slogan for the day is “If we drive for one less day, we can have one more nice day.”
Organized activities are held in many cities on Car Free Day. In Brussels, Car Free Day shall be valid (有效的) for everybody except persons with a special permit(许可征), but they have to slow down to the speed of 30 kilometers per hour. The public transportation is free on that day. In London, they have special “green areas”. Walking, biking and public transportation are encouraged. The streets are open only to walkers, bicycles and buses from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm. In Beijing, it asks drivers to leave their cars at home for one day each month and walk or ride a bike to work. More and more people are joining in the activity. In the first quarter of this year, Beijing only had 52 blue sky days, and you may see haze(雾霾) almost every day! We must do more for Car Free Day as a Beijing driver said. “We may not change the weather, but we can choose not to drive.”
But we do not want just one day and then a return to “normal” life. We should go on with Car Free Day.

Researchers from the University of Edinburgh have known the answer according to their recent study. Nine hundred twins took part in the study and had their happiness levels measured. The result shows that our genes(基因), in fact, control half of the personality traits(特点)that make us happy. And the other half is connected with the environment, including lifestyles, careers, relationships and so on.
“All human beings naturally hope for happiness. We have found that happiness is partly rooted(根植) in genes,” said Dr Alexander Weiss, the leader of the research group. “This study is both a milestone and a new beginning; A milestone because we are now sure that there is a genetic side of happiness and a new beginning because the happy genes have just been found.”
However, the researchers warn that genes are not the whole story. The environment can also influence our happiness levels. What’s more, we usually can’t change our genes, but we can change the environment. In fact, a great deal of our happiness is directly connected with whatever is happening in our lives. So finding the right ways to improve the environment is the correct thing.
To become truly happy, we need to understand our important needs perfectly for if we fail to make ourselves satisfied, then unhappiness might happen. Besides, doing simple things, such as keeping a diary and writing down three-things that we are thankful for every day, can increase our long-term happiness. Will you try it tonight?
