1 . Boyan Slat is an inventor from Netherlands. He likes to create big projects to solve big problems, like plastic pollution in our oceans. When he was a teenager, he started a project called The Ocean Cleanup to help with this problem.
While on vacation in Greece at 16 years old, he went scuba diving (浮潜) and saw more plastic bags than fish in the sea. This made him wonder “Why can’t we just clean this up?”. So, he started looking into the problem and possible technology solutions to clean up ocean plastic pollution. Then he looked for ways to deal with this problem and shared his ideas in a TEDx speech.
Soon, the TEDx video about cleaning up ocean plastic pollution suddenly spread widely. People really liked his ideas, and he got a lot of support. This allowed him to give up his studies in Aerospace Engineering and then set up The Ocean Cleanup. With only 300 of saved-up pocket money, Boyan started working on his plan.
It took a lot of hard work, but in the end, Boyan and his team were able to prove (证明) that their technology could clean up plastic from both rivers and the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Now, The Ocean Cleanup is busy cleaning up this big area of plastic in the ocean and has also put special tools in dirty rivers to stop more plastic from getting there.
Boyan and his team are trying to make our oceans and rivers cleaner and healthier for all. You can visit their website (https: //theoceancleanup.com/) to see how much progress they have made and learn more about their work.

Lao She has always been an admired and famous writer. His early hard life helped him create many great works. Four Generations (代) Under One Roof, one of his most famous works, is the most meaningful novel I’ve ever read.
It mainly tells the story of the hard life of the Qi family living in Beijing during the war of the 1940s. What moves me most is not its plot (情节), but how it describes different characters.
Qi Ruixuan is one of the main characters. He was a kind and active teacher who hoped to fight for his country all the time, but he had to stay at his hometown because of his family. Although he didn’t join the army, he tried his best to keep his family safe. And he always told his students and neighbors, Guan Xiaohe was a bad man. He worked for the enemies, but finally he was killed by them.
From the novel, we can learn how terrible it was during the war. The brave Chinese people finally won their freedom and honor through great efforts. Every brave man shouldn’t be forgotten. As the saying goes, “Every man has a share of responsibility for the future of his country.”
Until now, our country has become stronger. However, it will never make further progress if we teenagers remain satisfied with the comfortable life we have now. So contribute (贡献) to our motherland! Let’s get started from now on.

3 . As the saying goes, “It takes a village to raise a child.” And one neighborhood in our community truly understands the importance of coming together to support each other.
Last summer, a couple with their family moved into our neighborhood. They had a daughter named Lily, who was born with a physical disability that made it difficult for her to walk. However, she was always seen with a smile on her face. She would like to make friends with others and be a part of the community.
When Lily played outside with her new neighbors, she faced a challenge. Because of her disability, she couldn’t take part in some of the activities the other kids were taking part in. And it was hard for them to understand her needs. This made Lily feel a little upset and left out.
But instead of giving up, the community decided to come together and find a way to get Lily involved in their activities. The process was not always easy. It took one year’s effort for the community to get used to the needs of their new friend. As time went by, Lily became more confident and she felt like she truly belonged.
Lily’s parents were excited to see the changes in their daughter. They were thankful to live in a community that made sure every child felt valued. Lily’s family had expressed their thanks for the positive influence Lily had to the community. 4 . In the village of Kentucky, there lived a young girl named Amanda. She moved here for only 2 weeks. Her closest friends were far from her. Amanda kept herself busy for hours by walking around the grassy fields nearby, enjoying the natural beauty along them. On the weekend, Amanda would even volunteer on farms to help take care of sheep, cows and horses.
Still, it was easy for Amanda to feel lonely in her big house. One day, just as Amanda was about to leave and spend time walking around, she saw a cat jump onto the porch (门廊) . Even though the cat looked dirty, it was beautiful, with bright blue eyes.
Amanda’s feeling of surprise quickly gave way to a feeling of pity. Thinking of what she could offer the cat, Amanda hurried to the kitchen and prepared two bowls: one filled with fish and the other with water. After sniffing (嗅) them carefully, the cat began to hungrily eat them. Once it finished its meal, the cat ran away into the thick grass and disappeared.
From that day, the cat would appear on the porch every day in the morning and beg for food and water, and Amanda would always be there ready. Their relationship started to deepen as Amanda enjoyed regularly seeing her new “furry (毛茸茸的) neighbor”. The cat was too nervous to be taken indoors, but it was comfortable with Amanda gradually.
However, one day, everything took a different turn. In the morning, Amanda brought a bowl of fish near the porch and waited for the cat as usual, but it didn’t appear. The next day, and the day after that, the cat didn’t show up either. She stepped into the thick grass where the cat usually went and searched carefully.
At that time, she heard the sounds of kittens (小猫) meowing. She was surprised to find her “furry neighbor” lying in the grass with four kittens. The kittens were very cute. Amanda quickly rushed back home to prepare some food and water for them.

Lin worked as a volunteer at the Wolong China Giant Panda Garden in Sichuan that summer. Every year, volunteers go to the garden to take care of the pandas. People aged 14 and above can join in the volunteer program. Each volunteer should work for at least 60 hours.
Lin cleaned the panda’s home every morning while she was volunteering. “We have to collect the pandas’ feces (粪便), as it can tell us what the pandas have been eating and whether they are healthy or not,” she said. “The panda keepers analyze (分析) the feces every day.”
The experience also helped the volunteers understand pandas better. When Lin fed Jingke, she touched its fur. “It was not soft, but hard. It seemed that I was touching needles (针)!” Lin said.
Fu Rong, a 22-year-old friendly volunteer, is very interested in pandas. So she found lots of information on pandas and studied them carefully. She worked very hard and found pandas not only cute, but also dangerous. “Their teeth and claws (爪子) are so sharp. Pandas like to be alone. They may fight to protect their home,” said Liang.

6 . Yesterday in English class, we had a discussion about AI, especially on how humans and AI get along. Many students spoke up and shared their thoughts on the topic. It was a lively and interesting discussion. Here are three of the students’ opinions.
I want to add a pair of “super-long-distance” glasses (千里眼) in my eyes so that I can see interesting or dangerous things sooner. I could look out of the window and see people I miss far away. I could also warn people about earthquakes or other disasters. In this way, I can help warn people of the coming danger.
A huge difference between AI and humans is that robots don’t create new things, and they don’t get bored with things. Take the floor-cleaning robots as an example: They can sweep the floor for many hours without getting bored, but we humans would get bored quite quickly. We instinctively (本能地) want to create new things, and that’s where we have an advantage over AI.
I don’t want my memories to be changed or improved, because every memory is beautiful and worth recalling. But if it must be changed or improved with the help of AI, I would bring back all the memories I had as a baby that I’ve forgotten. My parents are always happy whenever they talk about my childhood. I think those would be good memories, and I wish I could have them back. |
1. What was the discussion about?
A.How humans get on with AI. |
B.How kids get on with their parents. |
C.How humans get on with animals. |

A.Because her eyes were badly hurt. |
B.Because the glasses can warn people of the coming danger. |
C.Because she would like to see people playing sports far away. |
D.Because she wants to see interesting or dangerous things sooner. |
A.Creating new things. |

7 . On a sunny Saturday morning, Mia was in her backyard with a bright smile. Today was perfect for trying out her latest creation—the Flower Watering Robot. She was exited to see if it could really water the garden by itself. She turned the robot on and watched as it started moving among the flowers. It was working!
Just then, a group of kids from her school walked by and saw her invention. Zoe, the tallest among them, stepped forward and turned the robot off.
“What is this?”she asked.
“It’s my Flower Watering Robot. It helps water plants by itself,” Mia explained.
The kids laughed, “Who needs a robot to water plants?” Zoe picked up the robot and set it aside rudely before they all walked away.
Mia felt sad as she picked up her robot. “Maybe Zoe is right…who would really use this?” she wondered, feeling discouraged.
Suddenly, she heard a voice. “Hey, are you okay?” It was Mr. Jackson, her neighbor. He noticed the robot and asked, “What’s this interesting thing?”
Mia brightened up a bit. “It’s my Flower Watering Robot. I built it myself to help with gardening...”
Mr. Jackson was amazed. “That’s amazing! You’re so creative. Don’t let those kids get you down. Keep inventing, and you’ll make something wonderful!”
“And guess what? I run a local science fair (展览会),” he continued. “I think your robot is great. I can see it winning a prize!”
Mia’s eyes lit up. The local science fair was a big deal, and the idea of her invention being part of it was exciting...
