2 . Clara Prado has worked as an English teacher for more than twenty years. In a recent interview, she told us her own experience of learning and teaching English.
How did you learn English yourself?
I started learning English when I was about six or seven years old. A new language school opened near my home. I started attending classes twice a week. I enjoyed these classes. During my teenage years, I attended several international youth meetings. I also went to Australia as an exchange student. I learned a lot from communicating with native English speakers.
What’s the best part of teaching English for you?
I have met many wonderful people throughout my career. Teachers are a fun group of people. They often get excited about a challenge. Many teachers are creative. They almost always find a way to make things work. I’ve learned a lot from them.
And then there are the students. There is nothing better in life than to see them realize their dreams and achieve something they have worked hard for.
What suggestions do you always give to your students?
As a language learner, you have to be comfortable with making mistakes. The goal is not to be perfect. It’s to be able to communicate with others. Learning a language can be a lifelong process. No one can learn to speak a language well overnight. You will be speaking just a little more every day.
What challenges do you think learners face today?
I think the biggest challenge today is the unknown. Technology and many other things are changing fast. We have no way of knowing what will happen in 10, 20 or 50 years from now, so how can you prepare yourself or others? Well, you can’t be prepared for everything. But you can equip yourself with creativity and the ability to keep learning throughout your life and to work with others. Most importantly, you must stay strong and carry on.

Education Is the Key
Reporter: Hello, everyone. Besides helping animals in pain, the SPCA also runs a very active education program in schools. Meet Ms Ann Lek, our Education Officer. Her job is to help more people understand animals so that they will be treated (对待) better.
Reporter: What is your job duty in the SPCA, Ann?
Ms Ann Lek: I give talks at schools and in many other places to help people learn more about animals. I pay visits at our shelter once a week to teach people what they should consider before getting a pet. Besides weekly talks and visits, I also help educate the public about responsible pet ownership.Reporter: When did you decide to become an Education Officer?
Ms Ann Lek: I always love animals and want to make this world a better place for them. I started as a volunteer with the organization, when I was still attending university. It is so enjoyable to work with those who feel the same as I do. After volunteering for four years, I wanted to do more. I decided to join them full-time when they needed an Education Officer.Reporter: What is the most unforgettable experience you have met while working for the SPCA?
Ms Ann Lek: Looking after pets and being able to bring them to work! I really appreciate (感激) the fact that I can bring my pets with me into the office when I want to. They’re my joy and give me the energy at work. Being able to bring my dogs or cats to work and having my workmates worry about them and shower them totally makes my day.Reporter: Which misunderstanding of pets would you like to change most?
Ms Ann Lek: I really hate it when people are unhappy when I talk about pets, or when taxi drivers refuse to take me because I’m travelling with my dog. Whenever I speak to them and ask why, they always give the same terrible reason: “They’re dirty.” They work and travel closely with human beings every day and share all kinds of public things, but why should we get worried about contracting (感染) a kind of illness from the friendly neighbourhood pets? So I think education is the key!1. Is Ms Ann Lek an Education Officer in the SPCA?
2. How does Ann help people learn more about animals?
3. How often does Ann pay visits at the shelter?

9 . Professor Shing-Tung Yau is a world-famous mathematician and Fields Medal winner. He is the dean (院长) of Qiuzhen College at Tsinghua University and the creator of some top math programs. These programs are designed to train top math talents, starting as early as middle school graduates. Recently, reporters from middle schools interviewed Yau about what math can bring us.
Reporters: Math knowledge may be hundreds of years old, but subjects that use math liked computer science change all the time. What do you think about this?
Yau: Math gives us a truth that lasts forever—a fundamental (基础的) truth. Prime numbers (质数) were discovered 2,000 years ago, but we still use them in computer science today. Math is the only truth that is always changeless. People are still exploring its power.
Reporters: At university, many students studying math may later go on to study business or engineering. They may see math as simply a stepping stone. What are your thoughts on this?
Yau: I think it’s OK. In this situation, we see different groups of students. One group focuses on building a strong foundation (基础) in math, while another group focuses on applying (应用) this knowledge to real-life situations. However, for effective application of math, a good understanding of its foundations is necessary. One common yet big mistake is believing that you can apply math effectively without knowing its basics.
Reporters: What does Qiuzhen College care about in training its students?
Yau: It cares about whether students can get through hard times. Research is difficult, and if students can’t bear failures and give up trying, they’ll lose out. Patience is so important.
Reporters: In today’s world, math seems more important than ever. How should someone not good at math deal with this? Are there any good books they can read?
Yau: There are many interesting math books from around the world for all ages. Read biographies (传记) of mathematicians and scientists to see how they struggled (奋斗) and succeeded. This way, they’ll find math is not actually scary, but fun. Many successful mathematicians were not good at it in the beginning.

Welcome to Teens Voice. I’m Amy. Today, we have Shaine Kilyun with us. She sets up the “Wheel Power for Pets" project to help animals that can’t move easily. |
Amy: Shaine, why did you decide to do the project? Shaine: I have loved all kinds of animals for as long as I can remember. Last year, I read about news reports that showed there were many animals with difficulty getting around in shelters (收容所). How could I help them?—This was the “driving question” that drove me to start my project. After comparing several ways, I finally decided to build wheelchairs and send them to shelters for free. Amy: How did you make wheelchairs?Shaine: I had no idea at first so I invited my two friends, Simon and Jill, to join me. We did research on how to build wheelchairs, such as reading science books and watching videos. Then we visited a shelter and decided which animal to help. We made wheelchairs according to the size of the animals and the type of support they needed. Amy: Good for you! What do you learn from your project? Shaine: Doing the project took lots of efforts, and I couldn’t have completed it without Simon and Jill. Simon was good at physics. With his help, we fully understood how wheelchairs worked. Jill drew well and she could make a perfect drawing of the special wheelchair for each animal. I have to say many hands make light work! |
