文章大意:本文主要讲述了魔术贴的发明过程及其广泛应用。

5 . On a summer day in 1948, a Swiss man named George de Mestral took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When they came home, George discovered that he and his dog were both covered with burrs (带芒刺的小果实).

As an engineer, George naturally began to wonder how the burrs stuck (刺入) to his dog and his clothes. Then he looked at them carefully. He found that the burrs had little hooks (钩子), which allowed them to catch on to things like clothes. George realized that he could use this finding to create a new way to fasten (扣紧) things.

It is a very long journey from the first idea to the final product. It was easy to find materials that could stick together, but finding materials that would continue to do so after years of use was difficult. George tested a very large number of different materials and production methods. After years of research and work, he invented what is known today as Velcro. In 1955, George started Velcro Industries to turn his idea into a product. In a few years, the product became popular around the world.

Today Velcro is used everywhere. It’s used in backpacks, jackets, wallets, children’s toys, etc. It even turns up in places you wouldn’t expect. For example, Velcro has been used by NASA for astronauts’ space suits. The product was also used to hold the heart together during the very first artificial heart transplant (人工心脏移植).

Reading is a good habit, but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills for you.

Preview (预览)—if it’s long and hard. Previewing is useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and business reports.

          Here’s how to preview.

●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two   paragraphs carefully.

●Then read only the first sentence of the other   paragraphs.

Previewing doesn’t give you all the details (细节). It keeps you from spending time on things you don’t really want or need to read.

Skim—if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get the main idea of light reading (轻松读物), like popular magazines and daily paper of sports.

Here’s how to skim.

●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep (扫视) them across each line.

●Pick up only a few key words in each line.   Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but we’ll get a similar idea of what it’s all about.

文章大意:本文主要介绍了人类历史上的一些发明,并介绍了这些发明对人们日常生活的影响。

9 . There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long ways.

For hundreds of years after that, there were few inventions that had as much influence as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s, the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn’t have to explore (探索) much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.

In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.

The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter in 1909, movies with sound in 1926, the computer in 1928, and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon came in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.

By this time most people had a very good life. Man has a desire to explore again. The world was known to man but the stars were not. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.

In 1969 man took his biggest step from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning thought. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

1. Man didn’t have a desire to explore a lot ________?

C.From the 1800s to the 1960sD.At the beginning of the 1800s

C.computer-radio-cameraD.movie with sound-wheel-nylon
4. What do the underlined words “a desire” mean?
A.A good way.B.A strong wish.C.A new invention.D.A wonderful idea.
5. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.When light was invented.B.Why cars were very important.
C.Which countries made steps into space.D.What inventions were made in different ages.
