THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d    1     the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h    2     these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e    3    , that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R    4    , that among these are life, L    5    , and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g     6     are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P     7     to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l    8     its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f    9    , as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d     10    , to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

American High School Life

On August 26, 2016, I was a     1     to begin my freshman year in an American high school. G     2     up in Beijing, I needed to deal with and overcome several difficulties. Fortunately, there are detailed instructions for students to follow step by step, from enrollment (登记注册) to the academic program.

Each semester, the school holds an orientation (培训) for transfer students. We thought that would be the p     3     time for us to learn more about the school. The a     4     we take part in included getting to know your campus, finding your classrooms and learning how to read the bulletin board. The biggest difference is that the students change classrooms for each subject. From Monday to Friday, the schedule also changes. Every student has different classes from the o     5     depending on their electives. Do you think that’s c     6    ? I had thought it might be difficult, but actually I had no problem after the first week. Each day, students a     7       seven classes. They have five minutes to get from one class to another. Because the hallways are so packed, they often push one another o     8     of their way to make it in time.

At first I k     9     avoiding attention, but I realized that I’d been anxious for no reason. High school was anything b     10     a horrible place. Now I am finding my way despite the language barrier and looking forward to a great school year.

Perhaps the most extraordinary building of the nineteenth century was the Crystal Palace,     1     was built in Hyde Park for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The Crystal Palace was different from all other buildings in the world,     2     it was made of iron and glass. It was one of the     3     buildings of all time and a lot of people from many countries came to see it. A great many     4     were sent to the exhibition from     5     parts of the world. There was also     6     great deal of machinery on display. The most wonderful piece of machinery on show was Nasmyth’s steam hammer. Though in those days, travelling was not as easy as it is today, steam boats     7    thousands of visitors across the Channel from Europe.     8     arriving in England, they were taken to the Crystal Palace by train. There were six million visitors in all, and the profits from the exhibition     9     to build museums and colleges. Later, the Crystal Palace was moved to South London. It     10     one of the most famous buildings in the world until it was burnt down in 1936.

What is    1    （友谊）? It implies    2    （忠诚）,     3    （同情），affection, and     4    （乐意）to help. Friendship is like sunshine. It brings us     5    （热情）and     6    （幸福）. If you are in trouble, your friends will help you or     7    （鼓励）you. When you are happy, they     8     （分享）your pleasure with you. You could be having the worst day of your life, and they would still make you laugh. Friendship is also one of the greatest pleasures that we can enjoy. In order to develop and keep our friendship, we should learn to communicate with others properly, to be a good listener and to be     9    （诚实的）and     10    （坦率的）. Most importantly, we need to have a correct understanding of friendship.

Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the years,     1     is called migration. They migrate to find food, seek a partner, or in search of warmer weather.

Every autumn,     2    （million）of the North American monarch butterflies begin a long and difficult journey. They manage to travel around 4,000 kilometers south and get to California or Mexico. However, how they did this was unclear.

A team of scientist has now found that the monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes     3    （measure）the position of the sun. It uses the time of day and the point of the sun to determine the way to go and change its     4    （direct）. Eventually, it manages to reach the place     5     it will spend the winter.

In the last few years its population     6    （crash）significantly.     7    （sad），human activity is the main reason why the number of monarch butterflies is falling.

People cut     8     trees and use chemicals, which destroys the natural environment.

The research on the monarch’s behaviour has lead to a greater     9    （aware）of this creature. There may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again. The     10    （much）we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive.
