What should have been a regular Sunday at the YMCA turned into a day one teenage lifeguard will never forget!

Eighteen-year-old Natalie Lucas has been working as a lifeguard at the YMCA in Longmont, Colorado, for the past three years. Recently, a couple entered the pool area while she was on duty. The woman was very pregnant, so Natalie kept a close eye on her as she eased herself into the shallow end of the pool.

Tessa Rider was nine months pregnant that day. She and her husband, Matthew Jones, came to the pool a few times that week to ease the discomfort of a nerve pain.

As Tessa was resting in the pool, she suddenly realized something was happening. Natalie noticed Tessa climbed out of the pool, so she went over to check on the couple. “I walk over and Matthew, the husband, says to me, ‘We’re having the baby right now.’ I’m like, ‘OK!’” Natalie recalled.

Matthew called 911, but as he spoke to the operator he knew it was too late. Tessa was already pulling her bathing suit off. Natalie helped Tessa and Matthew by bringing over the center’s medical supplies and towels, and calling for more assistance from the front desk. Throughout it all, she told herself to remain calm and focus on caring for Tessa.

“I knew I needed to stay calm,” Natalie said. “So I made sure to keep my head on and stay with them, keep asking them questions, and keep them focused on the baby and made sure that they were the most comfortable.”

Less than five minutes later, Matthew caught his newborn son as he was born on the pool edge.

After helping clear the baby’s airway and ensuring he was breathing, Natalie used her back to support the new mom until paramedic (护理员) arrived. Once there, baby Tobin Thomas Rider received a clean bill of health!

8 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Brandon, a father of two and an ordinary worker in a company, was making his way home on a typical Thursday evening. The sun had just dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the sky. Brandon’s heart was filled with joy and excitement as he was eager to share the news of his recent promotion with his beloved wife and children. Little did he know that this particular Thursday would be anything but ordinary. All of a sudden, there was a faint ominous (不祥的) feeling around him, but he pushed aside any thoughts of potential danger, focusing instead on getting home. However, just as he arrived there, a thunderous noise shattered the peaceful silence of the evening. He looked up just in time to see a train running into a truck, sending debris flying in all directions.

It was an accident that he had never witnessed before. Brandon was frozen in shock. It was a messy scene as people ran from the dangerous site, hidden behind flames and thick smoke. In an instant, everything around him seemed to be in chaos. People were screaming and cracks filled the air with the explosive force. “Get away from that train! Don’t go near it!” warned the train conductor, as he called 911 for help. Brandon was about to run away when he heard a cry for help. Brandon’s instincts kicked in. Without a second thought, he raced towards the voice, pushing through the panicked crowd. His heart pounded in the chest as he approached the crash site. As he came closer, the cries for help became clearer. They were coming from the burning truck stuck on the train tracks. He ran up to the window and saw the young driver trapped in his seatbelt and held down by the steering wheel as the fire closed in around him.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

9 . Florida shores may soon become a bit safer thanks to the creativity of 13-year-old Kaial Hajik in Panama City Beach. After hearing of several drownings (溺亡) in the Gulf of Mexico over the past few years, Kail worked with his father Joe Hajik to design an emergency kit prototype (原型) called the LifeBoKx.

The LifeBoKx includes basic life-saving equipment and educational materials to be positioned along the shoreline of Panama City Beach. The emergency kit includes two life jackets and visual aids including the “Drowning Chain of Survival,” a visual representation from the International Life Saving Federation (ILS) telling how to safely behave when drowning.

Kaial and his father said the story of Richard Stacey Redman made them want to create the LifeBoKx. Redman drowned on Panama City Beach in 2019 trying to save a drowning child. “It’s not just people drowning. It’s actually the people who work to help save these people that are losing their lives,” Joe Hajik said.

The LifeBoKx is just an idea for now, but the father-son team imagines placing the emergency kits throughout the Panama City Beach shoreline.

Wil Spivey is the director of the newly created Beach Safety unit. Kaial and Joe Hajik presented the LifeBoKx to Spivey and his team. When asked about the prototype, Spivey said, “Our main feeling is that we just thought it was really exceptional — that a young man saw a need or problem in his community and tried to take action and stand up and do something meaningful about it.”

Spivey said his team supported Hajik and offered suggestions. The LifeBoKx could not stand as a replacement to lifeguards and trained emergency responders but Spivey said it offered some useful tools, particularly the educational materials, and the possibility to help the progress of emergency response.

1. What do we know about the LifeBoKx?
A.It is supported by the ILS.
B.It has been used across the world.
C.It provides some life-saving equipment.
D.It was created to teach children to swim.
2. What mainly encouraged the father-son team to make the LifeBoKx?
A.The increasing number of drownings in their country.
B.Redman’s story of being drowned.
C.Kaial’s experience of drowning.
D.Their shared love of creating.
3. How is the LifeBoKx?
A.It is still in development.
B.It has gotten many orders.
C.It is popular among children.
D.It has not been accepted by officials.
4. What did Spivey think of the LifeBoKx?
A.He didn’t think it was creative.
B.He doubted if it would be useful.
C.He thought it might replace lifeguards one day.
D.He thought it might speed up emergency response.
