文章大意:这是一篇记叙文,文章主要讲述作者在后院建一个树屋方便孩子和邻居家的孩子玩耍的故事。

2 . A few years ago, I asked a neighborhood handyman to build a tree-house in my backyard. In part, this was to solve a problem: my children were good friends with the children who lived beside us and they liked to climb over the fence that separated the two yards. We could have just put a gate into the fence, but I decided that building some kind of climbable structure around the large fir tree in the yard, which also included a staircase into the neighbor’s yard, was a more creative solution to the problem, and I liked the idea that the tree-house would also serve to join the two play spaces together.

The handyman took the task much more seriously than I had expected. He made drawings, built small wooden models, and even held a kind of “visioning” exercise with the children and their parents to make sure that he hadn’t missed any important details. At the end of our lengthy discussions, he asked, “Where would you like me to put the beer rail?”

The question took me aback as I hadn’t really considered the possibility that a nice play structure in my yard might also facilitate beer consumption among the neighborhood children, but I quickly tuned in to the fact that our designer had intuited what should have been obvious to me- the children wouldn’t be the only ones to take advantage of this platform up among the branches of the beautiful old tree. And, indeed, over the years that I lived in that house I discovered that the platform made a pretty good perch (栖息处), not only for the occasional cold beer, but also for sitting and dreaming, reading a book, enjoying a picnic or even getting some writing done. My children enjoyed climbing around in the tree-house, playing tag, setting up imaginary pirate ships and fortresses (城堡), and they also used it for some quiet thinking and even the occasional math homework. The tree seemed to be a particularly good algebra tutor.

1. Why did the author prefer to build a staircase?
A.It would make the tree-house look prettier.
B.It would give better protection to the fence.
C.It would be finished at low cost.
D.It would connect the neighbor’s kids more closely.
2. What did the author think of building a “beer rail” initially?
A.It was out of date.B.It was unnecessary.
C.It was unaffordable.D.It was too complicated.
3. What does the underlined word “intuited” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Misunderstood.B.Examined.C.Recognized.D.Proved.
4. Which can best describe the handyman?
A.Ambitious and persuasive.B.Strict and kind-hearted.
C.Careful and far-sighted.D.Humble and generous.

5 . Lip-reading involves tracking facial movements to determine what someone is saying. Many lip-reading devices point a camera at the user's face. Others rely on sensors stuck around the speaker's mouth. Neither approach is suitable for daily use, says Ruidong Zhang of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. His team built a new lip-reading tech on a pair of eyeglasses, which uses acoustics—sound—to recognize silent speech. Zhang presented this work on April 19, 2023 at the ACM Conference in Hamburg, Germany.

"Imagine the sonar system whales use, " says Zhang. They send a sound into their environment and listen for echoes (回声). From those echoes, they locate objects in their surroundings. "Our approach is similar, but not exactly the same," Zhang explains. "We're not just interested in locating something. Instead, we're trying to track moving patterns."

Zhang calls the new tech EchoSpeech, consisting of two small speakers under one lens of a pair of glasses, two small microphones under the other lens, and a circuit board attached to one of the side arms. When EchoSpeech is switched on, its speakers play high-pitched sounds. People can't hear them. The sound waves move in every direction. Some travel around the user's lips and mouth. While speaking, the user's facial movements change the paths of those sound waves. That, in turn, changes the echo patterns picked up by the microphones. These patterns are sent to the wearer's smartphone over Bluetooth. Using AI, an EchoSpeech app then interprets the echo patterns. It matches each pattern to commands the smartphone then follows.

EchoSpeech currently recognizes 31 voice commands and recognizes numbers that are three to six digits long. According to Zhang, future versions could recognize a much larger vocabulary. If so, users could write personal text messages via silent speech. In a noisy restaurant, they could use that approach to send messages to friends who're hard of hearing.

People who've had their vocal cords (声带) removed have been contacting Zhang's team. They want to know if this interface could read their lips and then speak out loud for them. Zhang is now exploring whether EchoSpeech could do this in a person's own voice.

1. Why does Zhang mention the sonar system used by whales in paragraph 2?
A.To make their new tech more convincing.
B.To highlight the advantages of their new tech.
C.To explain the inspiration for their new tech.
D.To make their new tech more understandable.
2. What is the basis for the operation of EchoSpeech?
A.Sound travels in a straight line.
B.One's facial movements are unique.
C.Sound waves are reflected from an object.
D.Microphones are sensitive to loud sound.
3. What can we learn from the fourth paragraph?
A.People can hear sounds created by EchoSpeech.
B.EchoSpeech will be put into use before long.
C.EchoSpeech can enhance interpersonal communication.
D.Users can use EchoSpeech to write personal messages.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.New glasses read your lips and tell your phone.
B.Lip-reading devices can understand voice commands.
C.Lip-reading techniques are springing up worldwide.
D.Recognizing silent speech has already become possible.

6 . Heading to the beach is a popular option for lots of people on a hot summer's day. It's there that you'll find plenty of sand. But could sand be more important than we've ever realized? A team of scientists have found a very different use for the tiny grains that we like to play with on the beach.

They've come up with a type of measurement which will allow them to figure out what's known as the "age distribution fingerprint" of the mineral zircon, which is found within sand. The researchers believe this could provide them with new information on how the Earth's surface has changed over the last few thousand million years.

Some minerals, like zircon, have stood the test of time, and are thought to carry clues of Earth's history. By studying the zircon found in grains of sand from rivers and rocks, the scientists are able to work out previously hidden details about the Earth's past. "Strong and lasting minerals like zircon paint a vivid picture of the planet's history, including changing environments, the evolution of continents, and the accumulation of mineral resources at ancient p late boundaries," said Dr Milo Barham, who worked on the research. “The world's beaches faithfully record a detailed history of our planet's geological past, with billions of years of Earth's history marked in the geology(地质状况)of each grain of sand and our technique helps unlock the information.”

The scientists tried out their new technique by taking a look at sediment(沉淀物)in South America, East Antarctica, and Western Australia and they found some interesting differences. "The sediment on the west and east coasts of South America is completely different because there are many young grains on the west side that were created beneath the continent. However, on the east coast, all is relatively calm geologically and there is a mix of old and young grains," said professor Chris Kirkland, who also worked on this research.

1. What do the underlined words "a very different use" in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.Sand can provide a geological history of the Earth's surface.
B.Sand can reconstruct the conditions of mineral formation.
C.Sand can help discover the age distribution fingerprint.
D.Sand can be used to kill time on a hot summer's day.
2. Why do the scientists choose to study sand?
A.Its cost is extremely low.B.Its zircon is hard and long-lasting.
C.It exists all over the world.D.It's experienced many changes.
3. What can be learnt about South America from the last paragraph?
A.The west coast is relatively calm geologically.
B.The east coast is more active than the west one.
C.Its beaches have revealed the Earth's mysteries.
D.The grains on the west and east coast have different ages.
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.History of grains of sand
B.Interesting differences of sediment
C.A new technique will trace the human past
D.Sand can unlock what happened to Earth

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章讲述了美国沃特金斯小学开设FRESH FARM课程,让学生种植蔬菜,上烹饪课。该项目使得学生更重视健康,反响良好。

7 . Stacy Dean, an official at the US Department of Agriculture, was inspired by a visit to Watkins Elementary, in Washington, D. C. Students grow vegetables in their school garden. They also roll up their sleeves in the school’s kitchen to participate in a FRESHFARM FoodPrints class, which integrates cooking and nutrition education.

“Who’s next?” asks instructional coach Regina Green, as kids throw vegetables into the pan and the smell of fresh ginger and onions fills the air. “We grew these in our garden,” Jessie Gibson, one of the students, says proudly. Then he measures and pours dry ingredients into a bowl.

“Our family has tried new things because of the program,” says Catie Kelley, whose two children have participated in the FRESHFARM program. “They come home with the recipes,” Kelley says. “It’s fun because it’s things that we don’t usually make at home,” so it has encouraged them to try novel combinations. She says the kids take more of an interest at the grocery store to identify foods they’ve tried in the program.

Dean wants to have the science around healthy eating integrated. A block to scaling up these types of programs is money. The program relies on grants and receives some federal funding, but it’s not enough to expand the program to all the schools that could benefit.

In fact, there are other problems. At a time when diet-related disease is a leading cause of death, and unhealthy eating habits are rooted in US culture, it’s unrealistic to think that a cooking curriculum could overcome such a sweeping, societal problem. “We know from years of evidence that we need multiple things to come together to support healthy eating,” says Angela Odoms-Young, a professor of maternal and child nutrition at Cornell University.

Despite these challenges, programs like FRESHFARM can help kids expand their choices by introducing them to new tastes. At first, many kids are turned off by the bitter taste of greens. But through the magic of cooking, processing the onions, and blending in fresh ginger, kids can be inspired.

1. What inspired Dean during the visit to Watkins Elementary?
A.The coach’s skillful performance.
B.Students’ getting more access to nature.
C.The integrated hands-on cooking.
D.Students’ gardening and cooking.
2. How does the program benefit Kelley’s family?
A.They pay more attention to healthy eating.
B.They have a more harmonious relation.
C.They show more interest in shopping.
D.They have enriched their recipes.
3. What can be inferred from paragraph 5?
A.Advocating healthy eating needs joint efforts.
B.A cooking curriculum should be promoted.
C.Nutrition helps put students on a healthy path.
D.Food is fundamental to life and good health.
4. What does the author think of the program?
A.Complex.B.Widespread.C.Effective.D.Easily-operated.
