1 . St Moritz, the showiest of Switzerland’s Alpine resorts (旅游胜地), is no ordinary ski town. It’s responsible for winter tourism as we know it today. It was a small band of English holidaymakers that changed Switzerland forever. In 1864 a bet took place between hotelier Johannes Badrutt and the vacationers on a damp September evening in St Moritz. As they sat around the fire at the Engadiner Kulm Hotel, concerned about returning to the foggy London winter, the Swiss manager saw a golden opportunity.

“You holiday here in summer,” he challenged them over a bottle of red wine. “Why not enjoy the mountains year-round? Winter is so pleasant that on fine days you can even walk without a jacket.” Attracted by the promise of clean skies against a backdrop of towering peaks, the Englishmen were pleased to accept it; up until then, St Moritz had been a modest hiking destination in July and August. But if Badrutt’s promise proved false, the hotelier would pay for their journey and winter-long stay. How could they lose?

Come mid-December, the group of men returned to Switzerland. Towards the end of their week-long journey, sitting on a horse-pulled sledge and wrapped head-to-toe in furs, they went through the 2,284m Julier Pass in southeastern Switzerland. But by the time of their arrival in St Moritz, the skies had cleared, they were sweating abundantly, and Badrutt, jacketless and with his shirt sleeves rolled up, was there to greet them.

Of course, Badrutt won the bet. Word quickly spread throughout Britain about St Moritz’s distinctive climate—dry and sunny with a high degree of snow certainty. Year-round tourism landed the Alpine town of St Moritz.

That Badrutt almost single-handedly marketed this undeveloped winter wonderland is a little unbelievable. The first tourist office in Switzerland had been established in the same year as the bet. Other resorts like the ones in Davos and Grindelwald were also popping up then. The story of St Moritz is, in some ways, also a tale of social transformation. But what Badrutt did made the Swiss mountains accessible in a way that no one else had done before, so his role as pioneer cannot be downplayed.

1. What can we infer about Johannes Badrutt?
A.He had a good sense of business.
B.He was a man with some disabilities.
C.He disliked living in mountains.
D.He was addicted to gambling.
2. How did the British vacationers react to the bet?
A.They refused it because they thought it was unfair.
B.They’d rather pay for their winter journey by themselves.
C.They thought that a jacket-free walk was possible.
D.They were sure that Badrutt would lose the bet.
3. What finally made Badrutt the winner of the bet?
A.His warmest welcome.
B.The hotelier’s courage and wealth.
C.The vacationers’ passion for travelling.
D.The unique climate of St Moritz.
4. What does the author think of the success of St Moritz?
A.Davos and Grindelwald helped a lot.
B.He owes it completely to the bet.
C.Badrutt played an important role.
D.The success was made by tourist office.

2 . Orlando, the “Theme Park Capital of the world,” has enough to keep your family entertained for weeks. Four Best gives you a description of what each of these parks has to offer.

Aquatica Orlando

Aquatica Orlando brings the best of an aquarium (水族馆), zoo, water park and amusement park together into one experience. With 38 slides, 84,000 acres of white sand beach, you can easily spend the entire day enjoying the Florida sun with your family. Don’t miss the Dolphin Plunge, a clear tube water slide that takes you through the dolphin habitat.

3 . I’ve personally traveled through many countries that have had U.S. government warnings issued for them, and I’ve been perfectly safe. Specifically, in the last year, I have travelled safely to both the Philippines and Mexico, and traveled to many South Pacific islands during the tropical cyclone (热带气旋) season and only experienced two days of light rain in six months!. This is, of course, anecdotal, so it’s important that you do your research before booking your trip.

One thing I recommend doing is checking for recent posts on travel forums (论坛), such as Lonely Planet’s Thorntree, to see what people are saying about the country you’ll visit in terms of safety. The U.S. government may make out that an entire country is extremely unsafe when in reality, it’s a small part of it that tourists will be unlikely to visit. Read the travel warnings, too, to see which parts of the country the government recommends that you avoid.

Additionally, it’s worth speaking to your travel insurance provider before you leave to check that you’ll be covered during your travels to these countries. Some insurance .companies won’t cover you if there’s a severe warning for the country, but some will. Travel insurance is a necessity, so it’s definitely something to check out before you leave.

Keep in mind that the U.S. government will help you with emergency evacuation (撤离) from a troubled country, but it comes in the form of a repatriation (归国) loan via the Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management (ACS), which can be called to rescue you from a bad situation abroad. Remember by heart that you’ll have to wait overseas for the money to arrive and eventually repay the loan once you’re home safely. Just another reason to get travel insurance!

1. What should you do before a travel according to Paragraph 1?
A.Make a good route plan.B.Make a careful study of the trip.
C.Ask the government for help.D.Read the travel books first.
2. What does the author advise you to check for on travel forums.
A.Tourist places.B.Lonely planet.
C.Travel safety.D.Weather forecast.
3. Why is it necessary to know about travel insurance companies?
A.Some of them don’t cover all the countries.
B.They may provide false information.
C.They seldom talk with customers.
D.They sometimes offer bad service.
4. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.ACS will repay the loan for you.
B.U.S government is very generous.
C.It’s easy to escape from a troubled country.
D.Getting travel insurance is the best choice.

4 . When you come to London for a trip, it's best to plan a day out so as to maximize(最大化)the number of things yon can see. Time permitting,we can offer advice by e-mail if there's anything you particularly want to see.

If you are only in London for a day, a weekend or a week, use our SHORT STAY pages where we show you how to fill as much into your days as possible.

The best season to come is late Summer or Autumn —— recently we have been having Indian Summers (秋季的小阳春天气)from mid-September to the end of October with clear blue skies and 20 degree temperatures. Finally the weather breaks as the storm fronts move in off the Atlantic, then clears up for Christmas. February to April can be terrible, and the weather is very unpredictable. 6 . Saturday, March 24th

We have arrived in the hot, wet city of Bangkok. This is our first trip to Thailand(泰国). All the different smells make us want to try the food. We are going to eat something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is cheap, and very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to Chiang Mai in the North.

Tuesday, March 27th

Bangkok is wonderful and surprising! The places are interesting. We visited the famous market which was on water, and saw a lot of fruits and vegetables. Everything is so colorful, and we have taken hundreds of photos already! Later today we will leave for Chiang Mai. We will take the train north, stay in Chiang Mai for two days, and then catch a bus to Chiang Rai.

Friday, March 30th

Our trip to Chiang Rai was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. The village people here love the quiet life--no computers or phones. 7 . The Terracotta Army Museum is one of the must-visit attractions for all travelers to China. The attraction is located in Xi’an, in west China's Shanxi Province.

What’s special?

The terracotta Army is the buried army of Qin Shi Huang, an ancient Chinese emperor. These ancient sculptures were built and buried over two thousand years ago near the city of Xi'an. They were discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well looking for underground water. Over a thousand terracotta warriors and horses have been uncovered since then. Each warrior is made of clay (泥土). They are around two meters tall. The sculptures are so detailed that it is possible to guess the age, rank and personality of each one. None of the soldiers are the same.

The best time to visit

The Terracotta Army is an indoor attraction, which is not likely to be affected by weather, so it can be visited all year round.

As the Terracotta Army Museum is one of the must-visit attractions in China, it is crowded most of the time. We advise our customers to avoid the following periods when the museum is particularly crowded:

National Day holiday(October 1-7), when it is fully packed.

Labour Day holiday(May 1-3)

Weather in winter is dry, cold and the least comfortable, and it's also the worst season for air quality, but it's also low season.

Travel style: private, group or independent?

A private tour means a lot of flexibility and you will be well taken care of by a private guide and driver. The museum is crowded most of the time, but our guides know how to escape the crowds, and help our customers to enjoy more in the museum. See our 3-Day Terracotta Warriors Private Tour.

Going with a group you won't get lost, but i lacks flexibility and personal service.

Travelling on your own you may meet a lot of trouble, such as wasting time on finding a taxi or public bus to the attraction, lining up for tickets, reading maps, making sense of Chinese signs, etc.

1. The Terracotta Army ________.
A.was discovered by farmers when doing farm work
B.is a great underground army buried 1000 years ago
C.was made of clay with clearly recognized characteristics
D.has all been unearthed since its discovery in 1974
2. Which is the least crowded season to visit the Terracotta Army?
A.All the year round.
B.Clear winter days.
C.Labour Day holiday.
D.National Day Holiday.
3. If you want to travel freely with least trouble, you should choose ________.
A.a family tour
B.a tourist group

Last summer vacation was my most pleasant one. My parents and I had made at our to Xi’an. Instead of having a travel agency arranging our transportation and accommodation, we booked the train tickets and hotel rooms on the Internet by us. During our tour in Xi’an, we went to many places of interests and took lots of photos, learned about the history of Xi’an. No tourists would miss the local food in Xi’an, so would we. We enjoyed the typical local food, it tasted more delicious than we had expected. Hardly had I returned than I shared the photos and experiences for my classmates. The trip to Xi’an has been such happy memory to me that I will never forget it.

10 . I visited Aruba last week. On the first day, I mainly enjoyed comfortable sunshine on the beaches there. But I needed more than sunshine and sand to fill my week.

I rented a car the next day. One of my first stops that day was the Alto Vista Chapel, a historic north-side Roman Catholic churchy Just as I entered it, a colourful “party bus” filled with singing tourists pulled into the parking lot, ending the silence. So I left soon.

From the church I made my way to the California Lighthouse, named for the steamship California that sank nearby in 1891. After spending some time there, I went to La Trattoria El Faro Blanco, an Italian restaurant that sits on top of the hill and offers scenic views.

I love golfing, so I wasn't going on vacation without spending a day on the courses. The Tierra del Sol Country Club is for golfing on the islands located at its northwest point. Opened in 1995, it is a beautiful place with views of the sea and the California Lighthouse. I spent a full day there.

To completely escape from the other tourists, I booked a four-hour jeep tour for the fourth day. I went to the Arikok National Park, which covers nearly 20 percent of the islands I stood on a cliff and looked down on a natural pool that was formed inside volcanic rock (火山岩). It was amazing.

My final night was spent at Madame Janette Restaurant, Friends who had been to Aruba told me I had to go there. I dined there while listening to a local musician performing the Beatles’ While My Guitar Gently Weeps. It was so good and the crowd demanded more.
