Cuyahoga Valley National Park

33, 000 acres of forests wait between Cleveland and Akron, all along the snaking Cuyahoga River. Right whales, Bay of Fundy, Canada

Northern right whales are on the brink of extinction, but survivors arrive in the Bay of Fundy each summer (May through October) to feed east of Grand Manan Island. They are recognized by a broad back and no dorsal fin, which distinguish them from other whales entering the bay.

Planning: Whale-watching tours operate out of Digby Neck peninsula on Nova Scotia and nearby islands, such as Brier Island, St. Andrews, Grand Manan Island, and Deer Island.

Grizzly bears, Alaska, USA

Grizzlies like salmon. In mid-July and again in mid-August, grizzlies make for Alaskan rivers to hook out the fish with their formidable claws. The bears gather in large numbers at rapids and pools, sometimes fighting for the best sites. Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park, and Fish Creek, near Hyder, have viewing platforms.

Monarch butterflies, Sierra Chincua, Mexico

Each fall, millions of North American monarch butterflies migrate thousands of miles to the oyamel fir forests of the Transvolcanic Mountain Range, in the state of Michoacán. They flock intimately on tree trunks, bushes, and on the ground, fully showing their gregarious nature and occupy Sierra Chincua and four neighboring hills that make up the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve.

Planning: Chincua is one of two hills in the reserve open to the public from November through March.

7 . Who says you have to stay indoors when the temperatures drop? Here are favourite places to explore this winter.

Athens, Greece

In Athens, every November temperatures stay around the mid-20s, so have a trip to the Parthenon and Acropolis. A full afternoon is also necessary for exploring the Museum of Cycladic Art and its exhibitions — recently it has hosted Picasso’s.

In the streets of the Pysrri district is a hidden hole in the wall, from which one can go down to the basement restaurant, Diporto.

Huaraz, Peru

To some, Peru gives people images of students in printed shorts on a tour of Machu Picchu. There’s obviously so much more to do in the UNESCO World Heritage (遗产) site. Any hike through the surrounding Huascaran National Park will make you feel like you’ve stepped into The Lord of the Rings.

April and November are considered “shoulder season”, which means fewer clear days but you can enjoy the trails (路线) with fewer people.

Edinburgh, UK

Yes, it’s probably going to be freezing cold. Hot coffee steam up in a pleasing, romantic fashion in cafes. People can take a few minutes’ walk from the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.

For simple Scottish dishes there’s neighbourhood inn, the Little Chartroom. And the Sheep Heid Inn has been long enough to have served Mary, Queen of Scots. In the eight bedrooms at the 18th century Rock House, each is a mixture of ancient details and current fashion.

Valletta, Malta

Flights from the UK to Malta’s capital are only around £30, making it one of the best destinations for a November trip. 9 . The hike to the lost Incan city of Choquequirao is one of the most difficult in Peru. From the town of Cachora, Choquequirao is 161km west of Cusco. It’s an 18km walk to Capuliyoc Mountain, then down to Playa Rosalina where tourists camp for the night. Waking early, tourists then have to cross the Apurímac River and walk uphill to camp close to the ruins. The next morning, it’s another 2km walk up to the ruins, 3,100m above sea level. To get back? Well, it’s the same way you come.

“I’ve had people in their 60s and 70s do it,” said Juan Barrios, a guide from the Adventure Life company. “But some people come out thinking that because it’s only 28km from the destination, they can do it in a day. They are totally wrong! Six or seven days for the hike is best.” It makes sense then, that Choquequirao draws only about 30 people a day during the high season (June through August). Compare that to the 2, 500 people who arrive each day at the famous Incan city of Machu Picchu. But for those who make the journey, the rewards are great: beautiful mountain views at every turn, and the chance to explore the wonderful ruins nearly alone.

Believed to be created around the same time as Machu Picchu, in 1445, Choquequirao is actually larger than better-known Machu Picchu. But very little has been written about Peru’s other lost city and researchers are still unearthing new parts of the ruins, leaving life on the mountain relatively untouched.

Choquequirao is beautiful now because of its unique scenery and civilization. Even though the lost city was discovered by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Díaz in 1710, the ruins still make you feel as though you’re the first to find them. The question is what if more tourists flood in (大量涌入) in the future.

1. What does the first paragraph center on?
A.The height of Choquequirao.B.The hard trip to Choquequirao.
C.The transport to Choquequirao.D.The amazing views of Choquequirao.
2. According to the author, how many days for the hike is best?
A.1 dayB.2-3 daysC.4-5 daysD.6 or 7 days
3. In what way is Choquequirao different from Machu Picchu?
A.Choquequirao is older.
B.Choquequirao is smaller.
C.Choquequirao is quieter.
D.Choquequirao is better known.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards Choquequirao’s future?
A.Positive.B.Hopeful.C.Negative.D.Concerned.
