5 . Can talking to other people online help socially isolated (孤立的) older adults in any way? A new research is seeking evidence to prove the benefits of online social communications.
Lead author Hiroko Dodge started the study about ten years ago, recognizing the harmful effects of social isolation. The experiment, known as I-CONNECT, involved 186 participants aged 75 years and older. The experiment used the Internet to allow for conversational communications between the participants and trained interviewers. To make the experience more interesting, the researchers ensured that the participants had different conversation partners each time, and they provided daily topics and pictures. The experiment lasted a year, with 30-minute conversations held four times a week for the first six months and then twice a week for an additional six months.
At the end of the first six-month period, the participants showed higher cognitive (认知的) test scores compared to another group who did not take part in such conversations. And, at the end of the second six-month period, the participants had test scores indicating better memory-related brain function and improved emotional well-being.
Following the experiment, Dodge and her teammates established the I-CONNECT Foundation, aiming at providing social communications to socially isolated older individuals in the community free of charge.
“Our next goal is to extend these activities to reach more isolated people in need, as well as to study how social communications impact our brain functions,” said Dodge. “Providing frequent stimulating (有促进作用的) conversational communications through the Internet could be an effective home-based strategy against social isolation and cognitive problem.”
Human contacts are important for our emotional well-being. The team is currently researching into chatbots (聊天机器人) as they are aware that chatbots might work as effectively as humans for cognitive stimulations.
