文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。介绍了大众传媒的特点。

1 . Mass communication is a very broad field which includes advertising, mass promotion, political campaigns, public relations, mass education and even the way you interact with other people. It covers just about everything you do in your daily life. Some characteristics of mass communication are: communication, information overload, group effort and feedback. There are some more that are less often mentioned but are just as important as the ones that have been listed above.

The most basic feature of communication is interaction. Interaction takes the form of communication where you can interpret what someone is trying to say. For example, when a person says “How are you?” and you respond in a loud voice or in a concerned manner, it’s considered interaction.

Another characteristic of mass communication that you’ll come across is a large number of receivers. When communicating with a group of people, it is important to keep in mind that each receiver will bring different characteristics to the table when communicating. Different receivers will take up different topics and bring a different set of characteristics to the table. In some cases, you will need to communicate with many different types of receiver in order for your communication ideas to be fully expressed and taken into full effect. You should therefore consider the characteristics of your receivers when planning your communication strategies.

New media is also impacting communication. Each type of new medium has diverse different ways in which it can deliver messages. You can make use of several types of communication in many cases and reach a wide range of target audiences. For example, you can use the Internet in order to communicate with your audience. As a result, the amount of information also in turn becomes too much for the human mind to process in a timely and effective manner. This overload is not only unsound, but it also tends to make people impatient, which finally takes the form of arguments and other types of exchanges that are based on facts, assumptions or personal experiences. However, although you may have to deal with some constraints, the Internet is still a very powerful tool that should not be ignored.

1. What role does the example given by the author in the second paragraph play?
A.Explain the importance of politeness.
B.Explain the concept of interaction.
C.Explain the characteristics of communication.
D.Explain what body language is.
2. Why should we consider different receivers when planning communication?
A.Because communicators have many different characteristics on the dinner table.
B.So that your ideas can be accurately expressed and play a role.
C.In order to better improve your communication strategy.
D.Because the receivers have different views on different topics.
3. Why does communication often take the form of argument?
A.Because there are too many types of communication.
B.Because people have different experiences.
C.Because the new media is not perfect.
D.Because overloaded information is boring.
4. What is the author’s attitude towards mass communication?
A.Uncaring.B.Indifferent.
C.Objective.D.Subjective.

4 . This month, more than 4 million students across the Unites States will begin with their tenth grade, which is the make or break year for many 15-and 16-year-olds. They are likely to study in completely new schools, and have much more schoolwork and less free time. Even for those students who have done well in the ninth grade, going to high school can be a big challenge (挑战).

A study of Philadelphia high schools found that 57% (more than half!) of the students will experience the so-called "Tenth-grade shock" which means that many students will find big difficulties in their study. Some students deal with this shock by avoiding challenges. For example, some may drop difficult school work. Others may experience a hopelessness that results in failing their major classes, such as English, science and math.

This should matter a great deal for the teachers because students' smooth transition(过 渡)to tenth grade can have long-term consequences (后果) not only for the students themselves and their families but also for the society at large.

In the new economy, students who fail to finish high school with passing grades might have difficulty to get jobs. One study has found that the lifetime benefit to the local economy for one additional student who completes high school is half a million dollars or more. This is based on higher earnings and lower costs in health care, crime and other things.

We make these observations (观察) as researchers who have studied how schools and families can help young people to be successful. And we would like to make some suggestions on how to help our teenagers go through the "Tenth-grade shock”.

1. What is the so-called “Tenth-grade shock”?
A.The free time the tenth graders will enjoy.
B.The new teachers the tenth graders will meet.
C.The challenges the tenth graders will face.
D.The difficulties the tenth graders have gone through.
2. Who does the underlined word “we” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Researchers.B.Parents.C.Teachers.D.Reporters.
3. Where is this text most likely taken from?
A.An open letter.B.A research paper.C.A survey.D.A guidebook.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Best Advice for the Tenth Graders
B.The Importance of High School Education
C.The New and Hard Life for the Tenth Graders
D.The Possible Tenth-grade Shock and Its Consequences

5 . “It’s finally starting to feel like home,” Mom said as she and Gil emptied the last box.

“Yeah, I thought we’d never get unpacked,” said Gil. “Do you mind if I go biking outdoors? I’ll be back at dusk.”

“All right,” said Mom, “but be careful.”

“It is a nicer place here,” Gil thought. But in the city he had friends, and there was always something to do or someplace to go.

Gil slowed down when he got to a small farm. On his first day bike riding, he had seen a teenage about his age working there. They had talked for a while.

“Everyone swims and fishes in the river,” the boy, Tom, had said. “And there’s usually a ball game at the school on the other side of the farm.”

“Get your bike,” Gil had said. “You can show me around.”

“Can’t today. I have to cut the grass. Maybe tomorrow. ”

But the next day Tom had been busy, too.

“He doesn’t like me,” Gil had told his parents that second night at dinner. “Every time I invited him to go riding, he had some excuse.”

“If he lives on a farm, then he probably does have a lot to do,” said Dad. “My father lived on a farm, and he worked from sunrise to sunset.”

“I knew what to do,” Gil thought.

Gil got off the bike and walked in.

“Still working?” Gil asked.

“Never seems to end around here,” said Tom.

“I don’t know anything about farming,” said Gil, “but I don’t have much to do. Maybe I can come over tomorrow and help you.”

“That would be great,” Tom said, smiling. “If we get done early, we can go swimming afterward.”

“All right,” said Gil. “See you tomorrow.”

On the way home, Gil noticed for the first time that the smell of the grasses was so sweet.

1. What can we infer from the first four paragraphs?
A.Gil did not like his new home.
B.Gil felt very lonely at the moment.
C.Gil had few friends in the city.
D.Gil could not get along well with his mom.
2. Why had Tom refused to play with Gil?
A.He was too busy.B.He did not like Gil.
C.Gil was a shy teenager.D.Gil was not good at biking.
3. What did Gil and Tom finally agree to do?
A.Go fishing.B.Go swimming.
C.Go to a ball game.D.Go around the countryside.
4. What does the author mean in the last paragraph?
A.Gil felt very angry.B.Gil was annoyed with himself.
C.Gil was very happy.D.Gil was sick of talking with Tom.

9 . Every child faces friendship problems at some time, in some way, but generally speaking, there are three main problems that keep children from being part of a group.

    1

Kids who do too little in social situations could be ignored by the other kids and may have a hard time making friends. They are usually too shy and just wait for other kids to come to them.     2    . Then they can make friends in any social groups. These tricks include how to greet people friendly and show their good will through small acts of kindness.

Doing too much

We see this problem in kids who are always ready to cut in a talk or a game.     3    . If they continue their annoying behavior after a kid asks them to stop, they are likely to be disliked by the group. Therefore, these children need to learn proper ways of stopping, such as saying “sorry”, or sitting on their hands and keeping their mouths shut.

    4

Some kids have trouble making friends because they behave in ways that set them apart from the other kids in the social groups. For example, they may always try to be funny on purpose, or have strange interests and habits.

Every child is unique, but they have to learn to connect with other kids in natural ways.     5    .

A.Talking too much
B.Doing too little
C.Being too different
D.Kids make friends by doing fun things together
E.The other kids may find their actions annoying
F.They have to learn some simple ways to reach out
G.Then they can build friendships and enjoy being part of a group
