文章大意:这是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章通过具体事例谈论了网络交友的利与弊。

1 . Twelve-year-old Catherine has a lot of friends—632, actually, if you count up her online friends. And she spends a lot of time with them.

But is it possible that Catherine’s online friendships could be making her lonely? That’s what some experts believe. Connecting online is a great way to stay in touch, they say. However, some experts worry that many kids are so busy connecting online that they might be missing out on true friendships.

Could this be true? During your parents’ childhoods, connecting with friends usually meant spending time with them in the flesh. Kids played Scrabble around a table, not words with friends on their phones. When friends missed each other, they picked up the telephone. Friends might even write letters to each other.

Today, most communication takes place online. A typical teen sends 2,000 texts a month and spends more than 44 hours per week in front of a screen. Much of this time is spent on social media platform.

In fact, in many ways, online communication can make friendships stronger. “There’s definitely a positive influence. Kids can stay in constant contact, which means they can share more of their feelings with each other,” says Katie Davis, co-author of The App Generation.

Other experts, however, warn that too much online communication can get in the way of forming deep friendships. “If we are constantly checking in with our virtual world, we will have little time for our real-world friendships,” says Larry Rosen, a professor at California State University. Rosen also worries that today’s kids might mistake the “friends” on the social media for true friends in life. However, in tough times, you don’t need anyone to like your picture or share your blogs. You need someone who will keep your secrets and hold your hand. You would like to talk face to face.

1. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To tell about true friends.B.To start a discussion.
C.To encourage online friendships.D.To summarize(总结) the text.
2. What does the underlined part “in the flesh” mean in paragraph 3?
A.In any case.B.In public.C.In person.D.In advance.
3. What is Katie’s attitude toward online communication?
A.Unconcerned.B.Positive.C.Worried.D.Confused.
4. Which of the following is the Rosen’s view?
A.Teenagers need to focus on real-world friendships.B.It’s easier to develop friendships in real life.
C.It’s wise to turn to friends online.D.Social media help people stay closely connected.

2 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was in the afternoon before the end of the Second World War that Antonio Black, who was twelve, caught sight of a beautiful brooch (胸针) in a shop window. The brooch is so beautiful that he was unwilling to leave the store until he had purchased it. But it was too expensive — $5. His family was very poor and his parents struggled to make ends meet. Five dollars would buy almost a week’s food for his family.

Antonio couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Susan. Slim and beautiful, his mother was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.

Nevertheless, he opened the shop’s door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的) shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”

“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. “People around here don’t usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while.”

Antonio respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would be surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (锤打) from a side street, Antonio suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Antonio knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

One day, I tried to take a book from the top shelf in my room. It was such tall that I couldn't reach the book on it. So I took an old chair placing beside a window and stepped on it. I required to stay there for two weeks. I regretted not check the chair's condition before using it. After that accident, I did things careful in daily life and paid more attention to my safe.

There are several reasons why school uniforms are a good idea. First of all, uniforms help the school look smart. The students feel that they belong to a particular group. When every pupil in the school wears the uniform, nobody    1    (have)to worry about fashion (时尚). Everybody wears    2    same style of clothes.   Uniforms can be useful in unexpected ways. A school in Ireland has introduced an interesting new uniform. On the edge of the jacket, there is a piece of cloth     3    gives off light in the dark. When the children are walking or    4    (cycle)to school on dark mornings, car drivers can    5    (easy)see them.

But can uniforms help improve school standards? The answer    6    this question is not clear. One study in America found that students’ grades    7    (improve)a little after the school introduced uniforms. But some students didn’t want    8    (wear)the uniform. Other American studies showed no connections between uniforms and school    9    (perform).

School uniforms are    10    (tradition)in Britain, but some schools are starting to get rid of them. Some very good schools don’t have a uniform policy. However, uniforms are still popular. Pupils at about 90 percent of British secondary schools wear uniforms.

文章大意:本文是记叙文。主要讲述了Heather Davis如何变肥胖和后来改变生活方式成功减肥的经历。

7 . Like many children, Heather studied hard, did her homework and played sports after school. During her elementary school years, she was thin, but things changed as she grew up.

“My bad eating habits began during my kid years,” says Healther Daivs. “In middle school, I played sports, but with a diet of hamburgers and soda for lunch…big family dinners…I became overweight.” During her senior year in high school, Heather Davis, who is 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighed 200 pounds. “We had a meat-and-potatoes family. We had dessert every night and I was a member of the ‘clean your plate club’. I tried my best to stop gaining weight, but it seemed impossible.” remembers Healther Daivs. “It caught up with me.” By the time she was 21 and attended college, Heather Davis’ weight had increased to 250 pounds. Heather Davis says it was caused by emotional eating, a junk-food diet and lack of exercise.

The realization that failed diet led to the physical(身体的)cost of obesity(肥胖)made her decide to lose weight by taking exercise. She did gym exercise for two weeks and began changing her diet by cutting out potato chips, ice cream and pizza. Within the first two weeks, she had lost 18 pounds. Heather Davis remained determined, and over the next 12 months, with the support of her family and regular training with a gym trainer, she lost 110 pounds.

“My days of treating my body badly are over,” say Heather Davis. “I focus on things I enjoy such as language classes and beach vacations.” She says even though she’s lost 110 pounds, she’s still the same person-outgoing, and more importantly-happy. She’s also become a good example for those who also want to lose weight. “If I can do it, anybody can do it,” says Heather Davis.

1. When did Heather Davis become over weight?

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章介绍了父母给青少年大量零花钱来满足他们的消费习惯这一现象。

8 . Teenagers have been regarded as the new “spend, spend, spend” generation, but their spending could put their parents in debt.

A report shows that parents are lavishing cash on their teenagers so they can keep up with all the current fashion. But the report also shows that it is the age of the “kidult” as teenagers are acting older at a younger age and having a bigger say than ever in the clothes they buy and wear.

The majority of teenagers between 15 and 19 receive more than 100 pounds a month, but their plentiful pocket money is leading to many teenagers — particularly girls — becoming addicted to shopping as they spend a huge amount on clothes, make-up and electronic equipment.

Now the report is warning that the generous cash handouts from parents who owe a lot of money means the young people are not being taught important lessons in money management. Latest research from market analysts of Mintel International shows that British teenagers -11 to 19 years old - love to spend but they are not just spending their own money. According to Richard Caines, one of Mintel International Retail analysts, “Parents today are prepared to go well beyond simply satisfying the basic financial needs of their children. So much so that the amount of money parents give to their children significantly outstrips economic growth and will continue so. There is no doubt that in the future teenagers will be hitting the shops even more often than they do already.”

Today teenagers between 11 and 14 are more likely to receive at least 250 pounds a year as pocket money. The amount of pocket money obviously increases with age, so that between 15 and 19 years old the majority receive more than 100 pounds a month, with one in seven receiving 500 pounds or more.

1. Why do parents become indebted?
A.Due to their children’s pocket money.
B.Due to their children’s spending habits.
C.Because their children are acting older at a younger age.
D.Because their children have a bigger say than ever.
2. What does the underlined word “lavishing” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Paying.B.Loaning.C.Receiving too much.D.Giving too much.
3. What can we learn about pocket money from the last paragraph?
A.Kids get less when they are an adult.
B.7% of 15-19-year-old kids receive 500 pounds or more monthly.
C.11-14-year-old kids get 250 pounds a month.
D.The older the kids are, the more they get.
4. According to the report, what do kids need to do?
A.Learn how to handle their money.B.Stop spending pocket money.
C.Hit the shops more often.D.Be satisfied with the amount of their pocket money.

Mom was cooking while I was playing in my bedroom. All of the sudden, I heard my mom calling me. It was turned out that she asked me to buy some salts at the grocery store. I hesitated for a while. But see there was no one to depend, I had to do it by myself. I put on my shoes, took out an umbrella and walked out. When I went downstairs, I met a neighbor, whom asked me why I was going out on such hot a day. After I explained the reason, she said that I had several bags at home and offer to give me one. She was a true kind woman.
