1 . How to Pick a Good Book

It’s not news that we spend more time texting and surfing online than ever. But a recent study shows that more teenagers are reading good old-fashioned and ink-on-paper books. Reading is a good way to widen your knowledge and learn about yourself. You probably know how to find the best application programs for your phone.     1

1.Start with your interests

Reading on your own isn’t like reading for school.     2    It could be ancient martial arts, computers, or fashion design. If you can name the subject, you can find books about it.

2. Find your “type”

3     Books of fiction, like novels or short-story collections, can transport you to another world or help you to imagine something beyond your own experience. Not all fiction is the same. Try some different types of fiction and see which one you prefer. Non-fiction books give you the “who”, “what”, “when” and “why” of something. They tell stories using facts, but that doesn’t mean they are dull.

3.Read the “blurb(简介)”

The reviews and quotes on the back and inside covers of many books are known as “blurbs”. These comments not only give you an idea of what the book is about, but also help you to pick out future books. If you find a book you really like, take a minute to read the blurb and see which authors praised the book.    4

4.     5

Your local library can provide you with a lot of great books. Explain your interests and mention any writer you like, and the librarian can point you towards books that you will like. Then you can enjoy what you’re reading in a quiet place.

A.Often, they will have similar styles, and you might find you like books by those authors, too.
B.You can pick something that suits your interests.
C.Read in a quiet place.
D.Do you prefer fiction or non-fiction?
E.Ask an expert.
F.It is necessary to work out what the book is mainly about before reading.
G.But do you know how to pick a book that you will really like?

When I was a baby, my mother used to reading me nursery rhymes. I loved the rhymes creating skillfully at the end of the lines. When I grow older, I was introduced to many other forms of poems. That I liked best came from Asian because they conveyed meanings with the minimum of words. When I ran out of new poems, I would go to the library for less. 6 . When we’re at school, we spend a lot of time studying — reading things we have to later recall in tests. It’s the way we’re often judged: how well can we remember what we’ve read?

But there are different ways of studying. Do you read the information aloud? Do you read it in your head? Do you write notes, or perhaps ask someone else to test you? We usually find a way that works best for us.

Past research has shown that reading information out loud helps us to remember it better, compared to reading the same information in our heads. However, researchers in Canada and Australia wanted to find out whether reading aloud has an effect on our comprehension (理解).

Some previous studies have focused on how well people have been able to remember individual words, but not on how well they have been able to understand the information at a deeper level. The research team did four experiments, in which participants were given passages to read. They read some aloud, and read some in their heads. After reading each passage, participants were given multiple-choice questions to answer. Some of these questions tested their memory, and some tested their comprehension of the passage.

The researchers found that reading aloud did improve memory, but it didn’t improve participants’ ability to make connections between different pieces of information, or their understanding of the passage at a deeper level.

One of the researchers, Brady R. T. Roberts, told PsyPost that being able to remember information doesn’t mean we’ll understand it better. He added, “Read your shopping lists aloud to remember them better, but don’t bother reading your textbook chapters aloud.”

A.Three.B.Four.C.Five.D.Six.

4. What is the best title for the text?
A.Reading Aloud Helps Comprehension, But Not Memory.
B.Reading Aloud Helps Memory, But Not Comprehension.
C.Reading in Our Heads Helps Comprehension, But Not Memory.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了阅读童话故事在教育孩子价值观中的重要性。

8 . How do young children learn to have good values? How can parents teach their children about the importance of kindness and patience? At a time when more and more parents worry about the violent images their children see on TV, some are turning to fairy tales.

It is believed that fairy tales have a great influence on children because they describe the two sides of good and evil very clearly. When children hear the stories, they learn to care about others’ feelings. In each tale, they can see that there are many different kinds of people in the world and that we all have a choice about what kind of person we want to be. We can choose to do good actions, rather than bad ones, in our lives.

What kind of values can children learn from fairy tales? In The Princess and the Pea, a poorly dressed girl, who insists she is a princess, is given a difficult test by the Queen. When she passes the test, we learn that her dream comes true because she stays true to herself. In The Little Mermaid, the mermaid, who lives under the sea, wishes to be with the humans on land. Through her experiences, we learn about the importance of living with and accepting other cultures. In Pinocchio, a wooden puppet turns into a boy when he finally learns how to tell the truth.

Teaching values is the reason most often given for encouraging children to read stories. These fairy tales can teach children lessons about human relationships that are accepted around the world for many centuries. This might be the reason why they have been around for so long and will not disappear any time soon.

1. Why do fairy tales have a great influence on children?

A.A queen.B.A girl living under the sea.
