9 . The Chinese government has sped up the protection of the cultural relics in Tibet, spending more than 300 million yuan in 2006 for the protection of some valuable sites, an official said in Beijing Thursday.
The money was used to repair some famous Tibetan relic sites such as the Potala Palace, Norbu Lingka and Sagya Monastery, said Shan Jixiang, director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage.
It is reported that there are around 2, 000 cultural relic sites in Tibet, among which 35 are under state-level protection, and 216 of them under various levels of government protection.
“Although the money given to the protection has been increased, cultural relics protection in Tibet meets great challenges caused by growing numbers of tourists to Tibet, ” Shan said.
“It is necessary to protect the important cultural heritage in Tibet, considering the tourists flood in Tibet through the Qinghai-Tibetan railway, ” Shan said.
He suggested that the central government continue to increase investment for cultural relics protection and infrastructure(基础设施) construction in Tibet. Particularly a special institution with a special funding is needed for the protection of the top ten items of Tibetan cultural heritage.
“An office should be set up to work out practical protection plans for the top ten Tibetan cultural heritage items, ” said Shan.
Among them, the Zhaibung Monastery and Panchen Lama’s residence in Xigaze represent the development of Tibet. Jokhang temple, Tibetan Buddhism’s site, shows that Tibet is an inseparable part of China. Naining Temple saw the historical moment when all nationalities of Tibet fought against foreign invasion (入侵), and Lhagyari Palace showed the development of Tibetan local political power.
