1 . Melissa Brunning of Perth, Australia, was on a ship in Dugong Bay on Australia’s coast, when four nurse sharks swan close to the back of the ship. Several of Brunning’s partners dropped fish in the water near the sharks, one of which measured almost 2 meters in length. However, when it was Brunning’s turn, she tried to feed the shark directly by hand. As the shark took hold of the food, its jaws closed on her finger, and it pulled her into the water—a terrifying moment that one of her friends caught on video. We can see from the video that Brunning was bending towards the water, food in hand, as a nurse shark swam by. As it came nearer, she put her hand down into the water next to its head and then screamed as the shark bit at her finger and pulled her in. Her friends immediately dived into the water to save her. But after the shark set Brunning‘s finger free, she found that her finger was still attached to her hand, though severely hurt. Because the location where she was on holiday was so distant, she didn’t look for treatment until nearly two weeks later, by which time her finger was badly infected.

The accident was unquestionably annoying, but labeling it a “shark attack” was misleading, as Brunning put her hand into the shark‘s mouth voluntarily; the animal simply reacted as it normally would in the presence of food. At least Brunning admitted her responsibility for the incident. It was entirely her fault and the shark was blameless.

Brunning said her future interactions with marine wildlife would be better informed thanks to her annoying experience, as she wanted to “respect marine life, but just leave them alone”.

A.Pull Brunning into the ocean.B.Attack Brunning unexpectedly.
C.Take a bite of Brunning’s hand.D.Get the food in Brunning’s hand.
2. Why was Brunning’s finger badly infected?
A.The water in the ocean was heavily polluted.B.She was keen to enjoy her holiday on the sea.
C.She stayed too far away to get treatment in time.D.The teeth of the shark were sharp and poisonous.
3. Who is to blame for the incident according to the author?
A.The food.B.Brunning.C.The shark.D.Brunning’s partners.
4. What’s the best title for the text?
A.A story of a careless womanB.Ways of handling an emergency
C.A lucky escape from a shark attackD.Hand-feeding sharks: a terrible idea

2 . Ways to save yourself in a fire emergency

Knowing how to act fast in case of a fire emergency can save your life and those of others. Most are the times people die from fire outbreaks, for short of information on how to deal with that situation once it happens.    1    .

Stay low to the ground when the fire happens. It is, more importantly, to note that poisonous gases are often more dangerous than fire. In an accident of a fire, make sure you lower down not to breathe the smoke as you move towards the outside.     2    . The cloth may protect you better.

3    . Whenever you find yourself in a new place, make sure you know where the exits are in case they are not marked. Be sure you know where you can escape once a fire outbreak happens.

Keep away from elevators! Once you find yourself in a building and a fire scene has happened, stop using the elevators since most fail to work in case of a serious fire.     4    . Use the stairs if you do not want to get stuck in the building.

Use proper ways to put out the fire. Make sure you are knowledgeable on how to use fire extinguishers in any building you work from. Once you realize that is not working, call for help as fast as possible. If possible, you can also learn some knowledge of first aid in your spare time.     5

A.Know the fire exits
B.It is so dangerous to be kept in elevators
C.First aid may save life in the fire sometimes
D.To prevent a fire outbreak, here are some tips
E.Don't get into a new place without showing care
F.To save lives during a fire outbreak, do the following
G.If possible, tie a wet cloth around your nose or mouth

3 . Road traffic crashes kill 1.25 million people each year worldwide. The statistics are part of the   “Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015”. The report surveyed 180 countries, and it shows the number of annual deaths from traffic crashes is stabilizing(稳定).And that is good news as the number of motor vehicles grow worldwide. But the data also show that road crashes are the NO.1cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29. Young adults around the world are the worst driving risks. 4 . Six Flags and another amusement park company shut down eight more thrill rides on Friday around the US after a teenage girl had her feet cut off at the ankle on a Superman Tower of Power.

State inspectors, meanwhile, returned to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom where the accident happened to examine the ride, which lifts passengers 54 metres straight up, then drops them nearly the same distance at speeds reaching 87kph.

It was unclear at what point during the ride the 13-year-old was injured on Thursday, said Wendy Goldberg, a Six Flags spokesperson.

The girl was taken to a hospital. Details of her condition were not immediately available on Friday.

Six Flags has shut down similar rides at parks in St. Louis, Gurnee, Illinois, and near Washington as a safety precaution, Goldberg said. Six Flags Over Texas, near Dallas, also has a Superman Tower of Power, but it is not the same ride, Goldberg said.

There were no reports of injuries on the ride before Thursday, she said.

“Millions of people have safely ridden this ride in our parks,” Goldberg said.

The accident led Cedar Fair Entertainment to shut down and inspect drop tower rides at five of its amusement parks as a precaution, company spokesperson Stacy Frole said.

Intamin, a Swiss company, made all the rides that were closed by both companies, said Craig Ross, a spokesperson for Cedar Fair.

“We're going to keep these things down until we're certain it’s safe," Ross said. "We'll wait and see.”

An email message sent to Intamin was not immediately returned on Friday.

The five Cedar Fair rides that will be shut down are at Kings Island near Cincinnati; Canada's Wonderland, in Toronto; Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia; Carowinds, in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Great America in Santa Clara, California.

6 . The CCU (Charity Cycling UK) recently called on to raise awareness (觉察,意识)of dooring after discovering that many people don’t know what it is. Dooring is when a driver or passenger opens the door into another road user (typically cyclist) without looking for other road users.

The CCU chief officer Paul told Glou Live: Some people seem to see car dooring as a bit of a joke, but it’s not and can have serious results. We want to see great awareness made about the dangers of opening your car door carelessly, and people to be encouraged to look before they open. w Among the 3,000 injuries, 2,009 were cyclists, resulting in five deaths but this might not be the whole of the danger. Not all car dooring incidents will be attended by police, so the CCU has written to call for a public awareness campaign urging(敦促)all car users, not just drivers, to look before opening vehicle doors.

One of the ways the CCU suggests is the “Dutch reach”, where people leaving a vehicle reach over and use the non-door side hand to open the door. In the Netherlands they are known for practicing a method, known sometimes as the “Dutch reach”, which we think could be successfully encouraged in the UK. If you're really concerned about opening a door into the path of a cyclist coming behind you, consider using what’s known as the “Dutch reach” to open the door. That will naturally turn you in your seat and give you a much better view of what's coming up alongside in the car.

1. Which of the following behaviors belongs to dooring?
A.Two cyclists bump into each other.
B.Two cars crashed into each other.
C.A cyclist was knocked down by an open car door.

C.the report on the terrible accidents
D.the importance of traffic safety
3. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “attended”?
A.To deal with.B.To work for.
C.To accompany.D.To look after.
4. Why is “Dutch reach” useful to reduce dooring?
A.It helps drivers to see more clearly.
B.It raises people's concern of accidents.
C.It makes you uncomfortable while opening the door.
D.It allows the openers to have a wider view of the situation outside.

7 . On the way home from his job at a cake shop on one August evening, Craig Schum stopped his car at the East Hampton Airport for a break. He got out of the car and kicked off his shoes to relax.

Within seconds, though, Schum saw something shocking: A small plane dived and crashed into the woods at about 100 yards from the run-way. “I don’t remember making the decision that I should go help out,” he says. “I just started running.” Schum rushed across the street barefoot before taking off his apron (围裙). Then he climbed over a six-foot-high fence and ran toward the woods.

When he got there, he discovered the pilot, Stephen Bochter-his head was covered in blood-beside the burning plane. Brochter’s only passenger, his wife, Kim Brillo, was on the ground, unable to move. “She had blood all over her,” says Schum. “I thought she was dead.”

Without a second thought, Schum struggled to lift the fence and brought Brochter and Brillo out from under it. There was only one thought in Schum’s mind that he must bring the couple to safety as quickly as possible. Moments later, the entire plane exploded (爆炸). After the ambulance arrived, Bochter and Brillo were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries.

Brochter, an experienced pilot, later said that the plane’s electrical system had failed shortly after take-off. He had been trying to land at the East Hampton Airport when the plane began to fall. 8 . Surfer Dudes to the Rescue!

About 50 feet from shore of the Northern California’s Trinidad State Beach, two brothers were fighting for their lives. They had been swept out to sea in a rip current (激流), their mouths barely able to stay above the water. Thick fog made it difficult for beachgoers to see the guys, but the screams were unmistakable. And every second counted. The brothers, ages 15 and 20, were wearing shorts and T-shirts, unsuitable for a November day, let alone the freezing water. Keven Harder, a supervising ranger (巡查员), told the North Coast Journal in nearby Eureka that swimming in such a temperature “takes the fight right out of you.”

Luckily, four surfers in wet suits were nearby. Narayan Weibel, Spenser Stratton, and Adrian York, all 16, along with Taj Ortiz-Beck, 15, were on their surfboards riding up and down the coast on five-foot waves when they heard the cries. They turned and saw two bobbing heads and four struggling arms. “We looked at each other and knew these guys were about to drown,” Weibel told the Washington Post.

Weibel, Stratton, and Ortiz-Beck paddled toward the distressed swimmers while York headed to shore to warn someone to call 911. He then dived back in to help his friends.

As the surfers drew close, the brothers were still fighting hard for their lives. “It was pretty stressful, but there wasn’t any time to think about it, and that helped me keep my cool,” Ortiz-Beck says.

Ortiz-Beck pulled up alongside the younger brother. Grabbing him under his arms, he raised him up onto his board. Stratton and Weibel, meanwhile, hurried to help the older brother. He was large, 250 to 300 pounds, and he was panicked.

“I told them, ‘Calm down—we got you!’” says Weibel. “They thought they were going to die.”

York arrived in time to help get the older brother atop the second board. The surfers then paddled several minutes through choppy water to the medical help waiting onshore. The brothers were scared but fine.

“When we get a call like this one, it’s usually too late by the time we get there,” says Dillon Cleavenger, a first responder. “I can’t say enough about what these boys did. They were willing and prepared to risk their lives.”

9 . The town of Paradise has suffered a camp fire, which lasted 17 days and caused a damage of $16.5 billion. As a result, the beautifully named place lost its beauty.

Shane Grammer, a creative director for Disney’s theme parks in Los Angeles, paid close attention to the news of the fire. He felt quite helpless when seeing the pictures shared by his childhood friend Shane Edwards in the town, in which Shane photographed his white chimney, the only part of his house left after the fire.

“I’ve got to paint that chimney,” he said to Inside Edition. “I’m not trying to say anything. And it was an opportunity for me to express and be an artist, isn’t it?”

Grammer spent three hours spray-painting the image of a woman on the chimney, which is strikingly mysterious black and white, in the ruins. Perhaps it serves as a reminder of the beauty of life or just life itself. Then Grammer put the picture on Instagram. On seeing it, the victims of the fire could not contain themselves. “Beautiful and haunting,” one of them commented. And another said, “You bring beauty and hope.”

At this time, Grammer became aware that something deeper had been transformed by a purely artistic expression. “When the first mural (壁画) moved so many people, I knew I had to come back up,” he said to KRCR-TV. Grammer returned to Paradise eight times in three months, during which he completed 17 paintings of victims and Biblical figures, pickups and parts of buildings on walls.

Today, Grammer’s efforts have developed into a movement. He has also painted murals in dark places that seriously need some light around the world.

Ironically, the first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, existed for just several months, since the bulldozer (推土机) is a merciless art critic. But Grammer couldn’t be more pleased about it, which means the spirit of Paradise is rising again.

1. How did Grammer come up with the idea of painting the chimney?
A.From Disney’s theme parks.
B.From his friend’s description of the fire.
C.By looking at a picture of Shane Edward’s remaining chimney after the fire.
D.After learning about the news of the fire.
2. Why did Grammer tell Inside Edition that he wasn’t trying to say anything?
A.Because he had nothing to say.
B.Because he felt it difficult to express himself.
C.Because he had his way to express himself.
D.Because he had no opportunity to express himself.
3. What does the underlined part “something deeper” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A.People’s inner feelings.
B.People’s words.
C.The meaning of the mural.
D.The background situation.
4. What do Grammer’s murals mean to people?
A.They are mysteries.
B.They are entertaining.
C.They are artistic expressions.
D.They are inspiring.
5. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.The people in Paradise are in high spirits now.
B.Paradise is recovering from the disaster in a short time.
C.Grammer is not happy for the destruction of his mural.
D.The bulldozer was so cruel that it destroyed Grammer’s mural.

10 . The accident at Lake Sherwood was in our backyard. An SUV(运动型多用途车)had gone off the road, down a hill, and collided with a tree. When we heard the wreck, I remembered to say “call199”. My family was the first on the scene. Nick, my son, was on the cell phone with 911. He saw a friend who was a victim in the crash who was a 15 years old girl who was badly disfigured and had died instantly. It was a terrible scene.

There had been six people in the truck, all between 15 and 17 years old. My husband and I checked all the victims, and I picked one who was conscious and stayed with him. I talked with him and had him lay on the ground. When I asked him if he was hurt, he said he was sore all over. When help arrived, they asked me to stay and continue working with them. I did as Debbie Romine, .my instructor, said in class, and did what they wanted. They even said thank you before they left.

The sheriff deputies came by Saturday night to get our statements and play the 911 tape back, so Nick could identify all the voices in the background. They said over and over that the way he handled the call was the best they had heard in a long time. He was calm and worked with them even when he saw his friend who had died. The Sheriff’s Department is sending some people over to help us work through our emotions.

The first aid and CPR course I took in January really helped me. I just didn’t expect to put it to good use so soon.
