New Year’s Eve is filled with possibility and expectation. What will be the surprising experiences and delightful successes in the coming year? But also, what disappointments are waiting for us in the next twelve months?
In many ways, New Year’s Eve and the days that surround it are a line between past and future. That line is made up of a series of moments of transition (过渡) that take us out of the old and into the new. Transition can be challenging for many of us. It’s about letting go of the familiar and diving fast into the unfamiliar.
To look back upon what I have been through, I regard New Year’s Eve as an ending and also a beginning. New Year’s Eve brings a stop to the endless promises that fill our daily lives and a chance to think carefully and deeply.
Ten years ago, colored lights danced around the living room on New Year’s Eve and happy music was played. Upstairs, the children were asleep. But I wasn’t feeling happy. In mid-December, my husband and I had been told that he had cancer and that he was going to die. He had less than a year left, the doctors said.
Just as, back then, I had to face letting go of the life I had led with my beloved husband and stepping into a new world as a widowed (丧偶的) mom. I find that each year I have to step out of the version of me that suited the year that is ending and ease into the version of me who will rise to the goals I am holding for myself for the year ahead.
Last year at this time, I sat in a chair in southern France and drank in the quiet and beauty of the countryside around me. The three children and I had brought into this world talked and laughed around the table beside me as we enjoyed a lunch of bread and cheese. I was joyful and I had a bright heart with hope. It was another ending and another beginning.

C.To memorialize her beloved husband. | D.To share her view of New Year’s Eve. |
A.Think about the past and get ready for the future. | B.Spend more time with family members. |

A.The health problem she had made her unhappy on New Year’s Eve ten years ago. |
B.She felt expectant toward the future after what she had been through. |
C.To have the life filled with joy and hope, the writer had to make endless promises. |
D.It was the end of the world to live without her beloved husband as a widowed mom. |
A. | B. |
C. | D. |
When you want to buy something, do you buy it new or second-hand? These days, buying second-hand items is becoming more popular.
Many people have extra things to get rid of. In recent years, people have made more money and bought far more than they need. At the same time, more people are becoming interested in minimalism (极简主义).
What is minimalism?
Minimalism is an art movement that started in the US in the late 1950s. It focuses on art that is simple yet beautiful. Artists use simple geometric shapes (几何形状) to create it.
Second-hand items are much cheaper than new ones, so people can save money. It’s also good for the environment. In 2020, the quality of all man-made materials became greater than that of every living thing on Earth. Instead of making new things, it’s a better choice to reuse old things. So online second-hand trading sites are booming.
Where can I buy them?
Deja Vu has over 3 million users. About 20, 000 books are sold on the site every day. One million people sell over 2 million second-hand items on Xianyu every day.
People can even find some “extinct” items, or items that are no longer made from the trading sites.
Zhao Kaiqi, a college student from Harbin, loves buying books on Deja Vu. She can save a lot of money. It also brings her interesting experiences that she doesn’t have when she buys new books. Yin Weian, freelance writer from London, UK, is a big fan of vintage items. They are special and have a unique look. She likes items from the 1950s and 1960s, like clothing from the TV series The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. Vintage items carry stories from the past. Once she bought a bracelet with the words “Rose” and “Love, Jason” carved on it. It made her wonder about the story behind the bracelet. It doesn’t matter how rich you are, but whether you can find an item that fits you. It’s an interesting connection.
42. People buy second-hand items ________.A.to get the higher quality of hand-made products |
B.to protect the environment and save money |

Smartphones have become an important part of our daily lives. However, to protect younger students’ eyesight and make sure they focus on their studies, primary and middle schools will have more specific rules to limit students’ mobile phone use on campus.
The Ministry of Education released a notice in January that basically speaking, primary and middle school students can’t carry mobile phones to school and those who still require their phone for some reason must get their parents’ and teachers’ agreement and must hand their phones over during class time. The purpose of the notice is to improve students’ focus on study and fight addiction (沉迷) to the Internet and games.
According to a 2020 report by the China Internet Network Information Center, China had 150 million Internet users under the age of 18 in 2019, with 80 percent having their own mobile phones. This is worrying, as long-time use of smartphones harms children’s eyesight, cervical vertebrae (颈椎) and even the brain.
Many schools have taken actions to limit students’ phone use on campus. Some teachers ask their students to put their phones into a box to store them during class. And some students also agree with the new policy. They think there are more advantages than disadvantages. But some parents think it is unwise to take a “one size fits all” approach. We can’t simply cut students off from the Internet in the digital era. So it’s more important to cultivate (培养) kids’ ability to self-manage and develop good habits of phone usage.
51. Is long-term use of smartphones harmful to children’s brain?52. How many Internet users under the age of 18 in 2019 have their own mobile phones according to a 2020 report by the China Internet Network Information Center?
