Wu Song was on his way home. At noon, he felt hungry and thirsty. Suddenly, he saw an inn (酒馆) with a sign— “Three bowls and you’ll forget the mountain!” He wondered what the sign meant. He walked in, sat down and called out, “Get me some wine and do it quick!”
The owner came with three bowls, a pair of chopsticks and a dish. He filled one of the bowls with wine. Wu Song picked it up and finished it at one time. “This wine is really good!” he said, “I’ll have something else to go with this wine.”
The owner went in and soon came out with quite some beef in a big dish. He placed it in front of Wu Song and got him another bowl of wine. Wu Song finished it off and said, “That’s good wine!” But after the third bowl, the owner refused to get more wine. Wu Song got angry. He banged (猛击) on the table and asked why he was refused to get more wine.
The owner started to explain the meaning of the sign. He told Wu Song that his wine was better than others and it had a stronger effect. After people had just three bowls, they got drunk.
“I’ve had three bowls, but I’m not drunk,” said Wu Song. “Bring me more!” The owner asked if Wu Song was sure about this. Wu Song insisted (坚持). The owner went to get more. When Wu Song was about to pay his bill, he was told that he had eighteen bowls of wine altogether.
