"Cool" is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meaning.
“Cool” can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything.
When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say, "It's cool." You may think, "He's so cool," when you see your favorite footballer.
We all maximize(扩大)the meaning of cool". You can use it instead of many words such as “new” or “surprising”. Here's an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall they had visited. On one student's paper was just the one sentence, “It's so cool”. Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.
But the story also shows a scarcity(缺乏)of words. Without “cool”, some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility(可信性). Can you think of many other words that make your life as colorful as the word “cool”? I can. And I think they are also very cool.

“Our findings on the effects of homework challenge the traditional thought that homework is surely good, ” wrote Pope. She and her colleagues used survey data to examine opinions about homework and student well-being in a sample of 4,317 students from 10 high-performing high schools in California communities. Students in these schools average about 3.1 hours of homework each night.
The study found that too much homework leads to some problems:
● Greater stress: 56 percent of the students considered homework a main source of stress. Forty-three percent viewed tests as a primary stressor, while 33 percent put the pressure to get good grades. Less than 1 percent of the students said homework was not a stressor.
● Reductions in health: In their open-ended answers, many students said their homework made them lack sleep and have other health problems.
● Less time for friends, family and after-class activities: Students were more likely to drop activities, not see friends or family pursue hobbies they enjoy for spending too much time on homework.
The results offer evidence that many students struggle to find balance between homework, after-class activities and social time. Many students felt forced to choose homework instead of developing other talents or skills.

The teaching created by the charity Sleep Scotland is used to be part of the school course. Its aim is to help people realize the importance of sleep for young people’s bodies and minds.
The charity said watching TV and using computers and mobile phones at night can prevent children getting the nine hours of sleep they need. Sleep Scotland, which also offers a sleep advising service, said getting enough sleep can improve grades and physical health. However, less sleep can lead to be heavy and have a greater risk of feeling hopeless.
Jane Ansell, leader of Sleep Scotland, said, “I don’t think any parent would send out their child without enough food in the morning, or beautiful clothing, and they know how important exercise is, so why should you send your child out without enough sleep?”
The charity hopes to tell young people why they need a full night’s sleep and how to develop good sleeping habits. Kate Pearce, a teacher of guidance, said, “We’ve studied it for more than three years. Students often find it very difficult to get up in the morning and pay attention to their study. Sleep is surely a problem for them.”
Research shows that sleep time for children around the world has decreased over the past 10 to 20 years. A report said young people often believed they could make up for(弥补)sleep time by sleeping late at weekends. People use money to buy food, books, bicycles and hundreds of other things they need. When they work, they usually get paid in money.
Most of the money used today is made of metal(金属) or paper. But in ancient(古代的) time, people often used all kinds of things as money. One of the first kinds of money was shells(贝壳).
In China, cloth and knives were used as money. Elephant tusks(象牙), monkey tails and salt were used in some parts of Africa. Rice was also a kind of money used by the ancient people in some islands. Cows and other animals were used as money, too.
The first copper coins(铜币) were made in China. They were round and had a square(方形)hole in the center. Different countries had used different metal for their money. Later some countries began to make coins of gold and silver. But gold and silver were heavy to carry when people need a lot of coins to buy something expensive. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday went by, and on Thursday afternoon the boss went to the young man and said, “You can pick up your wages (薪水) on your way out today.” The young man was very surprised. He replied, “I thought you would pay on Friday.” “Usually we do,” the boss said. “But we’re letting you go today because you’ve fallen behind. You’ve dropped from first place on Monday to last place today.”
“But I’m quite hardworking,” the young man argued. “I am the first to arrive, and the last to leave, and even work during my coffee breaks!” The boss asked, “Have you sharpened (磨快) your axe?” The young man replied, “No, sir. I’ve been working too hard to take time for that!”
Our lives are like this. We sometimes get so busy that we don’t take time to “sharpen the axe”. Working hard is not wrong. But we all need time to relax, to think, to learn and grow. If we don’t take time to relax, we will feel bored and lose our effectiveness (效率).

Hostels(招待所)
Cheap, good-value hostels are aimed at all types of like-minded travelers, who prefer value over luxury and you don’t have to be young or single to use them. Britain’s independent hostels and backpackers hostels also offer a great welcome. Facilities(设备) and prices vary, especially in rural(偏远的) areas, where some hostels are a little more than a bunkhouse(临时住房) while others are remarkably comfortable — almost like cheap hotels.
Youth hotels
Founded many years ago to “help all, especially young people of limited means, to a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside”, the Youth Hotels Association is still going strong in the 21st century. The network of 230 hotels is a perfect gateway for exploring Britain’s towns and countryside.
B&Bs
The B&B (bed and breakfast) is a great British institution(机构). Sometimes you get a room in somebody’s house, and small B&Bs may only have one guest room, so you’ll really feel like part of the family. Larger B&Bs may have four or five rooms and more facilities, but just as warm as a welcome.
In country areas your B&B might be in a village or a farm surrounded by fields. Prices reflect facilities: and usually run from around £12 to £20 per person. City B&Bs charge about £25 to £30 per person, although they’re often cheaper as you go further out to the suburbs(郊区).
Pubs & Inns(小酒馆)
As well as selling drinks and meals, Britain’s pubs and inns sometimes offer B&B, particularly in country areas. Staying a night or two can be great fun and puts you at the heart of the local community.
Rates range from around £15 to £25 per person. Pubs are more likely to have single rooms.
