“Hello, everyone! Welcome to Tiangong Class.” A special lecture (讲座) began on Tiangong space station about 400 kilometers above Earth on Dec. 9, 2021. Lasting for about an hour, the space lecture was given to millions of students. Three astronauts (宇航员), Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu showed how they live and work on the space station and did some interesting experiments (实验). This space lecture was quite different from the one 8 years ago. The “classroom” was bigger. It was China’s first extraterrestrial (地球外的) lecture series.
Plants in space —The lab (实验室) of the space station has many conditions that the Earth lab does not have, such as the weightless environment. ① The important jobs for astronauts included cell observation (细胞观察) and “feeding” plant life. In the lecture, Ye showed students experiments about cell growth in a weightless environment.
Use it or lose it —The human body grows with the pull of Earth’s gravity (重力). But in space, our bones and muscles (肌肉) don’t need to support our body’s weight. ② This will cause bone and muscle loss. Astronauts can lose up to 20 percent of their muscles after a couple of weeks. That is dangerous for astronauts because they will be too weak to work.
③ . Zhai introduced a special uniform called “penguin suit”. Wearing it, astronauts can keep their muscles strong. Wang also showed students how she walked on a machine, and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise like that every day to prevent muscle loss.
Young voices —Students were really interested in the lecture. ④ A 13-year-old boy from Tianjin said, “The most exciting thing I learned is that astronauts ‘fly’ all the time because there is no gravity (重力).”
Look! It was an eye-opening experience that would light up students’ interest in science, wasn’t it?

The company said the drinks are “sucrose-free” (零蔗糖), but this is not the same as “sugar-free”. Now the company has changed the words “sugar-free” to “low-sugar” on the bottles.
In fact, there are many kinds of sugar. Sucrose is just one of them. Other kinds of sugar, such as fructose and sugar alcohol, are still in Genki Forest drinks. These types of sugar are used as sweeteners (甜味剂). They offer little energy, but a small amount of them can make drinks taste sweet. That’s why diet drinks like Genki Forest are popular among people who want to lose weight. They believe that they can not only enjoy sweet drinks, but also avoid taking in too much sugar. However, studies find that the sweeteners might make people eat more. When you eat sweet-tasting things, sweeteners send up your brain a “sweet signal”. Then your brain tells your body to prepare itself to take in energy. But since the diet soft drink has little energy, the brain will not receive what it is expecting. At this time, you will feel hungry and start getting energy by eating more food.
According to China Daily, drinking too many diet drinks might make you fat and lead to type 2 diabetes. It’s time for you to think twice about the diet drink trend.

Qomolangma is the highest mountain in the world. It reaches a height of 8,848.86 meters. Millions of years ago, two parts of the earth’s crust(地壳) hit each other. And over time, the pressure of the two parts caused the ground to rise above the sea. And that’s how Qomolangma was born.
Although Qomolangma is beautiful, the conditions on the mountain are very bad. The average(平均的) temperature is about -29℃. Even in July, the warmest month, the temperature only reaches about-19℃. It never gets above 0℃. As a result, the ice and the snow at the top of the mountain are always there.
The conditions on Qomolangma make it hard for animals to live. One of the only animals that can live on the mountain is the yak (牦牛). This large animal can weigh 305 to 1,000 kilograms and grow to about 1.6 to 2.2 meters tall. The animal’s blood can take in more oxygen (氧气) than the blood of other animals. That’s very important because there’s little oxygen in the air on Qomolangma.
In spite of(尽管) the hard conditions on the mountain—freezing temperature, strong winds, and changing weather, people from around the world continued to come to Qomolangma, hoping to be the first to make it to the top. No one was successful until 1953 when Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay became the first men to successfully get to the top of the mountain. Since then, many climbers from all over the world have risked their lives to get to the top of Qomolangma.

Recently, have you ever noticed the differently—colored dustbins in the street?
It’s important to know how to sort your waste. Not knowing how to sort waste can make it harder to save energy and protect the environment.
If you don’t sort your rubbish, all of it will go to a landfill(垃圾填埋坑). These landfills can take up large areas of ground. You know, the large areas can be used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries(电池), can pollute the soil and underground water. Other pieces of rubbish, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they’re properly recycled. Many cities in China have had waste-sorting events in recent years. For example, Shanghai decided in 2018 that during three years(2018-2020), all the people living in Shanghai should sort their rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.
◆Wet waste is also known as family waste. They’re things you don’t want but pigs can eat.
◆Paper, metal, glass and other things are recyclable waste.
◆Harmful waste includes things like medicines, batteries and paint.
◆Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the dry waste dustbin.
Many other Chinese cities, including Shenzhen, plan to use this method to sort their rubbish. Now you can try to protect the environment and encourage others to sort their rubbish.
根据短文内容,判断句子正(T)误(F)。1. Knowing how to sort waste can make it harder to save energy.
2. The electronic waste can pollute the environment.
3. All rubbish can be reused if they’re properly sorted.
4. The medicines you throw away belong to harmful rubbish.
5. Many cities are doing waste-sorting work nowadays.
Open an app at your smart phone and scan the code bar (二维码) on the garbage can (垃圾箱). When you throw garbage into the garbage can, it will show the weight of the garbage and the points you can get from doing so.
In some cities, different types of smart garbage cans are being put into use. In Beijing, for example, a smart garbage can has an LED screen, which not only shows national policies on garbage classification but also shows the correct steps for garbage sorting. It can also calculate (计算) the weight of the garbage and the accumulated points (积分) one can get.
It is a small thing for everyone to deal with garbage each day. However, it is also a big thing.
A.Garbage classification has been a new fashion. |
B.Another kind of garbage can is even smarter. |
C.It is no wonder that people cheered for these smart garbage cans. |

G.The good habit of garbage classification can improve the living environment. |
【推荐3】When Shanghai introduced (推行) a new garbage-sorting policy (垃圾分类政策) in July, 2019, people in the city spent some time learning about it. They said that every time they took out their garbage, the workers standing by the bin (垃圾箱) would ask, “What kind of garbage are you?” On May 1, 2020, Beijing also introduced a garbage-sorting policy. People should sort their garbage into four groups: kitchen, recyclable (循环的), harmful (有害的) and other waste. These groups are represented (代表) by four different colors of trash bins—green, blue, red and grey. Those who don’t succeed in sorting their trash correctly may be fined up to 200 yuan.
Some cities like Shanghai and Qingdao sort their trash differently. These cities use four different groups: wet waste, recyclable waste, harmful waste and dry waste. Although their names are different, the groups are actually the same. In fact, wet garbage in Shanghai is kitchen garbage in Beijing. And dry garbage is the same as other waste.
To help people sort their trash correctly, the Beijing government gave online guidelines (指导方针). If people don’t know how to sort garbage, they can look for it on the WeChat account (微信用户). By typing (敲打) a key word or taking a photo, people can find out which group their waste should be in at once.
