The tenth grade in school was a time we all enjoyed with friends and teachers. I had a group of friends whom I used to call my best friends; there were eight of us in the “Gang”, as most of us call it.
We all had different schedules as we were in different classes, but we would make it a point to meet up during the break and after school. Two of my best friends were in my class, and we always sat together.
One day, our class teacher came in with a girl. She was tall and with tan skin tone (小麦肤色). The teacher introduced her as Sally and she was going to be in our class this year. My friends looked at me and saw a smile appear on my face. They knew I loved making friends, and I was willing to help anyone in any way.
I found Sally to be a very quiet girl; she always liked to be left alone. We would want her to play with us, but she would never move from her seat.
I wondered why this girl loved being alone in her place. During the break we would sit with Sally and introduce ourselves to her. She would never talk to anyone of us; I would try my best to make her say anything she wished.
She never spoke anything to anyone, and I didn’t even think I saw her smile too.
Our school annual day (周年庆典) was drawing near, and our teacher were grouping us into dance, singing and plays.
We were all excited as we needn’t have our classes and could go for our annual activities. Our teacher asked Sally if she would like to join in any of the items in the annual day, but she looked down and shook her head saying no. She never came forward to take part in any competition.
The day finally arrived, and we were all happy, the dances were amazing and the songs were so beautiful.

Last week we went to the countryside to have a picnic. We bought some sandwiches, fruits and water for lunch. We started out quite early before there was too much traffic. After two hours’ driving, we came to a nice place. It was at the foot of a hill and near a river, with some large trees beside it. As it was a very hot day, we parked the car under a large tree and went for a swim in the river. The water was refreshing. After having a swim we had lunch in the cool shade under the trees.
Then we went for a walk. We saw some beautiful birds and butterflies. After walking for about an hour we returned to the car. However, we couldn’t get the car started. Finally we had to push the car off the road and wait for help. Of course, the car’s breaking down spoilt (破坏) our picnic in the end!

The People’s Republic of China celebrated the 70th anniversary of its founding in October last year. China held its largest military parade (阅兵仪式) in Tian’anmen Square on October 1st. People from home and abroad watched the military parade through different ways. They were all surprised at China’s progress. Looking back at the past, the great changes have taken place in China.
In the past, most people lived a hard life. Many people died of wars and hunger. Generations (几代人) of the family ever lived in a very small house: Usually, children couldn't have their own rooms and the younger seldom had new clothes. During the 1960s to 1970s, China fell far behind because of many kinds of reasons.
However, in 1978, China started to carry out the reform and opening-up policy (政策). It was an important turning point for Chinese people. Since then, China has developed rapidly.
Now, people’s life is very different from that in the past. The country tries its best to help poor areas so that all Chinese people can live a good and happy life. China also pays great attention to compulsory (义务的) education. Everything is changing in a surprising way.
So we have very good reasons to believe China’s future will be better and better.

Topic: Fewer and Fewer students would like to read
Do you like reading? If you ask a student the question, maybe his or her answer is “No”. Nowadays, students spend too much time surfing the Internet, chatting, listening to music or playing smart phones in their spare time.
This is not satisfying. As students, they should spend more time reading. As we all know, reading makes a full man. It not only increases our knowledge, improves our abilities to solve problems, but also helps us form a good habit, makes us get the feelings of happiness and makes our life colorful. —By Jack, a doctor |
But not all books are fit for students to read. So choosing books is very important for reading. Many students spend a lot of time reading books about singers or actors. It’s a waste of time. Some students even read some bad books and it is harmful for them. So be careful of the books the students read. —By Tom, a teacher |
In fact we students like reading, too, but we have neither many books nor much time. Maybe we should have some new ideas: start reading clubs, set classroom bookselves and organize reading competitions. We know that if we can read more, we can not only do better in our study, but also be rich in our inner hearts. —By Lucy, a student |

7 . The human body is an amazing machine. It has many parts that form systems. The systems work together to keep you alive and healthy. Let’s look at some of your body’s systems.
There are 206 bones in your body that make up your skeleton. Your bones give your body shape and strength. They also protect your inner organs (内部器官). Most of the bones in your body are linked together at joints (关节). There are different kinds of joints. Different joints let body parts move in different ways. The joint that joins your arm and shoulder lets your arm rotate (转动). The joints at your elbows and knees let your lower arms and legs move up and down. If it were not for moving joints, you could not walk, run and swim.
Muscles control the movement of your body. There are three kinds of muscles. Skeletal muscle (骨骼肌) is the muscle that is attached to bones. It makes your arms, legs, fingers, eyes and other body parts move. Cardiac muscle is the strong heart muscle. It works around the clock. Smooth muscle is found in your skin, stomach and other organs.
Your brain and thousands of miles of nerve fibers form your body’s communication system. The brain is the control center. It receives information from your sense organs—eyes, nose, ears, tongue and skin. The brain tells muscles what to do. If your fingers go near something hot, a signal goes to the brain. It then sends a signal to tell your hand to move away.
Many other parts also help you say strong and healthy. You can help your body do its job by eating well and getting exercise. You can also help by avoiding stress and unsafe situations.

8 . Dogs are smart. They are fun pets and great friends. Dogs can hear and smell better than we can. They learn fast and like to be helpful. Some dogs are trained to help with very special work.
People who can’t hear may miss important sounds. They won’t hear an alarm clock, a doorbell or someone calling their name. A hearing dog is trained to alert them to sounds.
Therapy dogs help people to feel better. They are gentle and patient. They visit people in nursing homes, hospitals and homeless shelters. They provide quiet company when someone is sad or ill or feels lonely.
A guide dog is trained to help someone who can’t see. The dog always stays at the person’s side. The guide dog helps a blind person cross a busy street safely. It can warn the person about curbs (路缘石) and steps.
Sheep spend most of their lives in a large grassy pasture (牧场). They may wander to different areas. Sometimes the farmer needs them all in one place. The herding (放牧的) dog finds all the sheep and moves them to that spot.
Sometimes people are lost in the woods or are trapped in a building that fell down. Search-and-rescue dogs find people who are lost, hurt or trapped. They move slowly and carefully, finding people rescue workers might not see.

9 . Do you look like your parents? What genetic traits(遗传特性) did your parents pass on to you? Was it their eye color or their height? It could be their sense of humor or their musical talent. Or maybe it was their fear of mathematics.
A research at Ohio State University in the US has found that genetics are partly responsible for children’s math skills and anxiety about math.
Scientists studied over 500 sets of twins to find out how genetic affect math anxiety. Over a period of 10 years, the twins completed math tests and filled out surveys about their levels of math anxiety. They found that fraternal twins (twins with different genetics) had different levels of skill and anxiety about math. Identical twins (twins with the same gene set) has similar levels.
This shows that people’s fear of math is partially affected by their genetic makeup(基因构造). Math anxiety has a strong effect on a child’s abilities. University of Chicago found math anxiety can cause the same feeling as being physically hurt.
This anxiety means that some students are not willing to study math as much as they should. Therefore, they become even worse at math and less confident in their skill. This only adds to their fear.
But if you’re bad at math, don’t try to blame(责怪) it on your parents. Math anxiety is till rare—genetic-factors explained about 40 percent of people’s math anxiety. The environment, including school and family, is also part of the equation(影响因素).
