The tenth grade in school was a time we all enjoyed with friends and teachers. I had a group of friends whom I used to call my best friends; there were eight of us in the “Gang”, as most of us call it.

We all had different schedules as we were in different classes, but we would make it a point to meet up during the break and after school. Two of my best friends were in my class, and we always sat together.

One day, our class teacher came in with a girl. She was tall and with tan skin tone (小麦肤色). The teacher introduced her as Sally and she was going to be in our class this year. My friends looked at me and saw a smile appear on my face. They knew I loved making friends, and I was willing to help anyone in any way.

I found Sally to be a very quiet girl; she always liked to be left alone. We would want her to play with us, but she would never move from her seat.

I wondered why this girl loved being alone in her place. During the break we would sit with Sally and introduce ourselves to her. She would never talk to anyone of us; I would try my best to make her say anything she wished.

She never spoke anything to anyone, and I didn’t even think I saw her smile too.

Our school annual day (周年庆典) was drawing near, and our teacher were grouping us into dance, singing and plays.

We were all excited as we needn’t have our classes and could go for our annual activities. Our teacher asked Sally if she would like to join in any of the items in the annual day, but she looked down and shook her head saying no. She never came forward to take part in any competition.

The day finally arrived, and we were all happy, the dances were amazing and the songs were so beautiful.

7 . The human body is an amazing machine. It has many parts that form systems. The systems work together to keep you alive and healthy. Let’s look at some of your body’s systems.

There are 206 bones in your body that make up your skeleton. Your bones give your body shape and strength. They also protect your inner organs (内部器官). Most of the bones in your body are linked together at joints (关节). There are different kinds of joints. Different joints let body parts move in different ways. The joint that joins your arm and shoulder lets your arm rotate (转动). The joints at your elbows and knees let your lower arms and legs move up and down. If it were not for moving joints, you could not walk, run and swim.

Muscles control the movement of your body. There are three kinds of muscles. Skeletal muscle (骨骼肌) is the muscle that is attached to bones. It makes your arms, legs, fingers, eyes and other body parts move. Cardiac muscle is the strong heart muscle. It works around the clock. Smooth muscle is found in your skin, stomach and other organs.

Your brain and thousands of miles of nerve fibers form your body’s communication system. The brain is the control center. It receives information from your sense organs—eyes, nose, ears, tongue and skin. The brain tells muscles what to do. If your fingers go near something hot, a signal goes to the brain. It then sends a signal to tell your hand to move away.

Many other parts also help you say strong and healthy. You can help your body do its job by eating well and getting exercise. You can also help by avoiding stress and unsafe situations.

8 . Dogs are smart. They are fun pets and great friends. Dogs can hear and smell better than we can. They learn fast and like to be helpful. Some dogs are trained to help with very special work.

People who can’t hear may miss important sounds. They won’t hear an alarm clock, a doorbell or someone calling their name. A hearing dog is trained to alert them to sounds.

Therapy dogs help people to feel better. They are gentle and patient. They visit people in nursing homes, hospitals and homeless shelters. They provide quiet company when someone is sad or ill or feels lonely.

A guide dog is trained to help someone who can’t see. The dog always stays at the person’s side. The guide dog helps a blind person cross a busy street safely. It can warn the person about curbs (路缘石) and steps.

Sheep spend most of their lives in a large grassy pasture (牧场). They may wander to different areas. Sometimes the farmer needs them all in one place. The herding (放牧的) dog finds all the sheep and moves them to that spot.

Sometimes people are lost in the woods or are trapped in a building that fell down. Search-and-rescue dogs find people who are lost, hurt or trapped. They move slowly and carefully, finding people rescue workers might not see.

Big Newfoundland dogs are strong swimmers. In Italy, they work as lifeguards. They will jump in the water and pull a drowning person to safety. Some can even jump into the water from a helicopter.
