These days schools don’t allow students to bring mobile phones to schools. Many parents are worried. How can they connect (连接) with their kids? Well, smart watches may be the answer to their worries. Smart watches are like small computers. They usually tell time and count a person’s steps. Most smart watches connect with smart phones and they let the users make calls, and send and receive messages. Often smart watches have microphones (麦克风) and speakers. Some even have cameras.

Children are too young to have a mobile phone, so many parents buy smart watches for them. They are less worried because they can call their children at any time through smart watches. Also, many smart watches have GPS trackers (追踪器) where their children are, so they know if everything is OK.

But now some groups in Europe say many smart watches are not as safe as what we think. Some watches allow more than parents to track where the children are. They also allow anyone to send the children a message. People can also control the watches from far away to watch and listen to the children. To be safe, anytime a smart watch makes a call or sends a message or GPS information—the information should be processed (数据处理). So no one else can get the information.

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone

When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone? Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time?

As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (恼人的).

One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone. Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom kept bothering me.

However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes— changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to reorganize some of my habits.

First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone. I found that the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and that my ability to focus improved.

I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares. Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.

What did the arrival of the Internet and 24-hour news mean for British newspapers?

At first, this looked like the end for print newspapers. National newspapers were worried that they would lose all their readers, so many of them decided to create free online versions (版本) of their papers. But this brought about another problem: how does one make money when your product is free?

But in fact, there was no need for newspapers to worry. Surveys have found that most UK adults still trust paid newspapers more than “free news”.

And the Internet now provides newspapers with a different place to publish, as well as new media options (选择). Many newspapers now have their own podcasts (播客) and online video content.

This may explain why the readership of online newspapers in the UK is very different from the readership of printed newspapers.

The most popular printed newspaper in the UK is The Sun (太阳报). It has a daily circulation (发行量) of nearly two million. The “mid-market (中端市场)” audience mainly reads The Daily Mail (每日邮报), which sells nearly 1.7 million copies daily. Of the “quality” newspapers, the most popular is the Daily Telegraph (每日电讯报), which sells nearly half a million copies daily, followed by The Times (泰晤士报) and the Guardian (卫报).

Online, it’s a different story. The most popular newspaper online is The Daily Mail, which has 1.8 million visitors every day. And the next most popular is the Guardian, with 1.4 million browsers daily.

In fact, many of these online readers are not from the UK. The Mail and The Guardian are the two most-read newspapers in the USA, with The New York Times (纽约时报) in third place.

No, the newspaper is not dead, just changing form—and now reaching more people than ever.

For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death’s door. Why is the situation so     1     for newspapers?

Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s and the     2     was the most successful in the early 20th century. With the     3     of the radio and TV, however, there was a huge drop in newspaper sales. By the mid-20th century, the radio and TV had become so     4     that people no longer had to depend on newspapers for news.

Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer. People coming home from work increasingly turned on the TV, instead of looking     5     a newspaper. But newspapers still managed to survive, because they could provide in-depth (深入的) reports     6     TV news could not.

But newspapers suffered a another heavy blow in the 1990s. With the introduction of the Internet, large amounts of information became free online. Many newspaper readers     7     that they could read news online for free. There seemed to be little reason for them to spend money buying newspapers.

So what direction will newspapers take in the future? Will they be replaced? Maybe not. Many newspapers are now     8    . Some are providing electronic newspapers. Some are going even further by spreading newspapers to places they have     9     been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are an important source (来源) of in-depth news and opinions. If newspapers     10     completely some day, there will be nothing to take their place.

9 . Should kids have smartphones? Some may agree while others may not. Recently, we had a class meeting and talked about the topic.

Some students explain why kids should have smartphones. First, (A) phones allow parents to get in touch with their kids easily. Parents can see their kids’ location and pick them up if there’s a sudden dangerous event or situation. Second is education. An app like Duolingo helps kids learn Spanish and other languages. Bilibili can also be a learning tool. Finally, smartphones help kids communicate with their friends, especially when they are in different cities or countries.

Here are also reasons why kids should not own smartphones. Looking at screens for too long could be bad for their eyes. Smartphones can also take away students’ attention from school. And studies say that teenagers and young adults spend the most time on social-media platforms (平台), they are more often feeling sad and hopeless. This might happen to kids, too. What about safety? Well, children should always be with adults, so safety is not a reason for using a smartphone. With all the risks to health, schoolwork, and happiness, it’s not (B) worth it for kids to have smartphones.

As for me, I advise not taking any risks. Young kids are not good at controlling their smartphone use. The more time kids are on their phones, the more dangers they can be meet.

1. Translate the underlined sentence (A) into Chinese.

10 . In 1987, a small company named Huawei was started in Shenzhen. After more than 30 years of development, the company has now beaten Apple and become the world’s second largest maker of smartphones. It has also become the world’s supplier (供应者) of SG. In China and even in the world, Huawei is a wonder. Although it started producing mobile phones not many years ago, it has become one of the most famous phone companies.

But recently, Huawei faces some difficulties. The US government made a law to stop its sales in America. American officials said Huawei gave information that it collected to the Chinese government. At the same time, the US government planned to stop selling parts and services to Huawei. They believed that Huawei’s business would be hurt this way.

“We have never received such a request from the Chinese government and we have never tried to get into other systems to collect information,” Ren Zhengfei, Huawei’s president said. “The law would have little effect on our company. Huawei has enough ability to deal with the problems,” Ren added.

In an interview several years ago, Ren Zhengfei said, “I started Huawei with only £4000 at the beginning, but now it has become a 100 billion company. The experience was not as romantic as you imagine.”

Facing the law of the US, Huawei is growing. Huawei’s smartphone sales around the world rose 50 percent compared with a year earlier in the first three months of 2019. At the same time, sales from both Samsung and Apple fell. So far Huawei has grown into the world’s largest telecommunication equipment supplier (供应商), selling in 170 countries.
