4 . When we talk on WeChat or QQ, sending words can be a little boring. Many people like to use memes (表情包) to make the conversation more fun. But sometimes memes can cause trouble.
Recently, 10 students lost their chance to study at Harvard University. That’s because they use bad memes in a private Facebook group chat. The memes were about killing people and jokes about the deaths of children, the BBC reported.
At first, this kind of group chat was for the students to get to know each other before going to the university. But later, some students began to set up another group chat and used many bad memes in it.
When Harvard University found out about the chat, it took back the offers from the students.
Many people agreed with the decision (决定). They believe that the students’ actions show their real characters. Students shouldn’t treat death as a joke.

Lin Tao, 14, from Beijing, supports parents’ opinions. He uses a non-smart phone (非智能手机) and finds that its functions (功能) are enough for him. Lin Tao once said many students spent much time on games and QQ with their smartphones. He also said, “If students use smartphones, they may use them to listen to music, surf the Internet or do some other things. In this way, they may not work hard at their studies. As students, we don’t need to use smartphones.”
Chen Yun, 15, from Wuhan, doesn’t think so. She thinks that she can’t live without smartphones. She said, “Smartphones are useful. I often use my phone to surf the Internet, chat with my friends and get the latest (最近的) news. It opens up my eyes.”
Li Yan, 13, from Nanning, understands the point well. She said, “I put my phone out of my sight when I am studying. I also set a time limit (限制) about 20 minutes when I use it. I follow these rules (规则) so the smartphone doesn’t affect my life badly.”
Smartphones have advantages (优势) and disadvantages (劣势). The key to the problem is how to use smartphones. In fact, it is a test of students’ self-control (自我控制).

6 . These years, we like taking our mobiles to a dinner table. This happens a lot, especially when we eat out. Once a dish comes, instead of lifting our Chopsticks(筷子), we take out our mobiles and click. Later, we post the photos onto Weibo or WeChat, waiting to be “liked”. Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal, to see how many “liked” we can get.
A recent study shows that what we are used to doing is not so good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less pleasant. According to a research, more photos you take, the less delicious the food seems to you. So, why not stop taking photos and just enjoy the food in front of you?
On the other hand, after posting the photos onto the Internet, one will not be able to control(控制)himself and check his mobile many times. “Does everyone like my photos? I hope a lot of people like them!” It seems that your mobile secretly calls your name all the time, even when you are with real people.

9 . It seems to me that British newspapers aren’t really newspapers at all. They contain news, it is true, but much of this news only appears in print because it is certain to shock, surprise or cause a laughter.
What should we expect to find in a real newspaper? Interesting political articles? Accurate reports of what has been happening in distant comers of the world? The latest news from the stock exchange? Full coverage of great sporting events? In-depth interviews with leading personalities?
It is a sad fact that in Britain the real newspapers, the ones that report facts, sell in thousands, while the popular papers that set out to shock or amuse have a circulation of several million. One’s conclusion is that the vast majority of British readers do not really want a proper newspaper at all. They just want a few pages of entertainment.
I buy the same newspaper every day. In this paper political matters, both British and foreign, are covered in full. The “leader” column may support government policy on one issue and oppose it on another. There is a full page of book reviews and another devoted to the latest happenings in the theatre, the cinema and the world of art. Stock exchange prices are quoted daily. So are the exchange rates of the world’s major currencies. The sports correspondents are among the best in the country, while the standard of the readers’ letters is absolutely first class. If an intelligent person finds a copy of this paper 50 years from now, he or she will still find it entertaining, interesting and instructive.
So, my favorite newspaper is obviously very different from those popular ones that have a circulation of several million. But that does not mean that it is “better” or that they are “worse”. We are not comparing like with like. A publisher printing a newspaper with a circulation of several million is running a highly successful commercial operation. The people who buy his product are obviously satisfied customers and in a free society everybody should have the right to buy whatever kind of newspaper he pleases.
1. What kind of newspaper does the author prefer?A.A weekly newspaper. | B.An entertaining newspaper. | C.A popular newspaper. | D.A serious newspaper. |
A.don’t like real news | B.have bad taste | C.are mostly uneducated | D.want entertainment |
A.entertaining | B.instructive | C.interesting | D.amusing |
A.common people | B.curious people | C.intelligent people | D.hard-working people |
A.better than the real newspapers |
B.different from the real newspapers |
C.worse than the real newspapers |
D.more interesting than the real newspapers |

(4) British girls aged between 12 and 15 text more than boys of the same age group.
Parents
Parents want their kids to be safe. Are teenagers safer with a mobile phone or without? Many parents want their children to have a phone so that they can be in contact at any time or in any place. On the other hand, for lots of parents a phone is a source of possible danger. Parents worry that their child may meet the wrong kind of “friends” on social networking sites or that they might receive cruel messages from school bullies. Some parents have rules about their children’s mobile phone and internet usage and bad behavior can result in removal of mobile privileges.
William, a parent of two teenagers said, “The great thing about my kids having mobile phones is that I can keep in touch with them. The worst thing about teenagers having phones is that some young people use them to send offensive messages to each other.”
“A teenager feels lost without a phone. If my daughters behave badly, I confiscate their phones and their behavior quickly improves.” said Kiera, mother of 15-year-old twins.
School
Mobile phones are permitted at school in the UK but pupils are not allowed to use them in class and they must be on silent during lessons. Teachers can take away phones if these rules are broken. School students can use their phones at break time and at lunchtime. Some teachers in British schools complain that pupils don’t always follow the rules and that lessons are disrupted by people texting, making and receiving calls, looking at social networking sites, watching videos and even making videos in the class.
