①. Once upon a time, there was a farmer. One day, while he was working in the field, he saw a hare ran into a tree stump (树桩) by accident (偶然地) and died. The farmer took the hare home and cooked a delicious meal for himself. That night, he thought, “I don’t have to work so hard. All I have to do is to wait for a hare every day by the tree stump.” So from then on, he gave up farming, and waited by the tree stump. But just from then on, he never saw another hare run into the tree stump.
②. This story tells us we will get nothing unless we work hard. Remember: no pain, no gain (不劳无获).

During the Song Dynasty , there was an official(官员) named Zhang Guaiya. He worked in Chongyang county, in today’s Hubei. At that time, theft happened everywhere even in the county’s vault(钱库).
One day, Zhang saw a low-ranking(低阶的) official come out of the vault in a hurry . Zhang stopped him and asked, 1. “Why are you in such a hurry?” “No reason,” said the official. Zhang thought the official might steal the money. So he asked people to search the official. They found a copper coin(铜钱)in the official’s headband(头巾).
Zhang asked him how much more money he had stolen. The official said he didn’t steal anything else. Zhang ordered the guards to beat him.
The official didn’t give in. He said, “I only stole a coin. 2. You can’t kill me just because of that!”
Zhang was very angry. He wrote in a red pen, “If you steal a coin every day, there will be a thousand coins after a thousand days. Constant dripping wears away a stone(水滴石穿).”

3 . Long long ago, there was a crow(乌鸦). He lived in the countryside. One summer, there was no rain and it was very hot. The crow was very thirsty(口渴的), but he couldn’t find any water.
“1.我应该怎么做呢?” he thought. “I must drink water, or I’ll die!”
Just then he saw a vase(花瓶). 2.Though there was some water in it, he couldn’t get the water.
The young crow didn’t know what to do. He was so worried and thirsty that he began to cry(哭). “Will somebody please help me?” he cried loudly. 3.但是没有人听到他的哭声。
4.After some time, he stopped crying. He tried to break the vase, but he couldn’t move it. At last, he had a good idea. He began putting stones(石子)into the vase. 5.Slowly, the water reached the top of the vase. The crow could drink.
“What wonderful water!” laughed the crow. “I’m happy that I didn’t spend all my time crying. Thinking is much better than crying!”

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep hole. The hole was very deep. 1. The other frogs believed the two were hopeless to be alive. At first, the two frogs tried to jump up out of the hole with their efforts. But the other frogs kept telling them to stop and wait for their death. Finally, one of the two frogs gave up and soon he died.
2. 另一只青蛙仍旧尽可能地奋力跳。 Once again, the crowd of frogs shouted at him and told him to give up. 3. Because all his efforts would end up doing nothing. But he jumped even harder and finally he made it.
When he got out, the other frogs said: “Didn’t you hear us?” The frog explained to them that he had a poor hearing. So 4. 他以为他们那时候正在鼓励他。
The story teaches us two lessons. Firstly, there is power of life and death in the tongue. 5. An encouraging word to someone who is down can help him make it through difficulties. Secondly, a destructive(消极的) word to someone who is down can make him give up and die. So be careful of what you say.

Three Turtles 三只乌龟
Three turtles decided to have a cup of coffee.
Just as they entered the cafe it started to rain.
The biggest turtle said to the smallest turtle, “Go home and get the umbrella.”
“I’ll go get the umbrella if you’ll promise not to drink my coffee.”
“We promise,” answered the other two.
Two years later, the big turtle said to the middle-sized turtle, “Well, I guess he isn’t coming back, so we might as well drink his coffee.”
And then they heard a little voice from just outside the door, “If you do, I won’t go.”

My favorite book is The Little Prince written by the French writer Antoine. The book tells about how children see the world. 1. It is so interesting that I can’t help reading it over and over again. A prince fell in love with a red rose that was beautiful but vainglorious(自负的). Later, he left the rose because of her vanity. Then he made friends with a fox. They lived together for some time, but in the end he made up his mind to leave to find his rose. To his surprise, the rose was dead. It’s a pity that he lost his rose forever. The prince is kind and innocent(天真无邪的). 1. So he doesn’t understand the people who want to have power, wealth, and praises. He flew to different planets to find out the reason, but finally he still had no idea.

1. Honesty is the best policy. Have you ever heard about the saying, perhaps the most popular in English language? It was perhaps the favorite motto of America’s first president. The wisdom is at least 2, 500 years old. It first appeared as the moral of Aesop’s fable, a story about two woodcutters — one honest, the other dishonest. The fable was a favorite with both Greek and Roman children. Any child can easily grasp its timeless moral. Here is the story.
One day a poor man was cutting a big piece of wood near a river. Suddenly his old axe fell into the water. 2.唯一的斧头丢了,他很忧伤。Then all at once a beautiful fairy came out and asked the man what was the matter.
“I have lost my axe,” he said, “3.我砍柴时弄掉到水里了。”
The fairy showed him a gold axe and asked, “Is this yours?”
“No,” said the man.
4. The fairy then showed him a silver axe and asked again. “Is this yours?” “No,” again answered the man.
Then she showed him the old axe.
5. “Yes, that is mine,” called out the happy man.
“I know that well enough,” said the fairy. “I only wanted to see if you would tell me the truth, and now I’ll give you the gold axe and the silver axe besides your own one.”

They decided to carry some apples to the city. They borrowed some money from their friends and bought nearly 1,000 kilograms of apples in the villages and carried them to the city on a tractor. When they got to the city, Uncle Li cried, “Bad luck! People have carried too many apples here!”. A few days later they had to sell them at a low price. They felt unhappy and returned to their village.
