1 . The Great British Bake Off is a very popular TV program (节目) in the UK. It is a program to find good bakers (烘焙师). Every week, a group of people will make various cakes and bread. They have a time limit (限制) to make the food. At the end of every show, the best cook is the “Star Baker” and the worst cook has to leave the competition (竞赛). After 10 weeks, there is one winner.
The program started airing in 2010. But nobody expected (预料) it to be so popular. People really enjoy the show’s relaxing and happy atmosphere (气氛). The bakers are all very friendly to each other and even help each other. This is very different from other shows. Some people think the show is very typically (典型地) British. People also enjoy learning how to make different types of cakes, biscuits and bread.

Eleven young people from different countries sit around a meeting table, and have a discussion about the hottest topics at the moment. More amazingly, they do that all in Chinese. Isn’t that exciting? If you feel the same, you had better watch Hubei Satellite TV’s show Informal Talks.
First aired in April, 2015, the show is already in its seventh season. As one of the most popular TV programmes, it has scored at least 8 out of 10 for each season on the Internet. Its producer(制片人)Yu Qing says when choosing the topics, they would first think about what interests the young people most.
Da Zuo, one host of the show, says he looks through comments(评论)on the Internet to know people’s opinions on the show. To better take part in the talks, he has also read a lot of books about the histories of different European cultures or such classics as A Brief History Time by Stephen Hawking.
Brian Gonzalez, better known as Gong Biyang in China, has been a guest of the show for the past eight years. To him, the beauty of the show is that everyone shares true stories that happened in their own lives.

8 . This week, in Los Angeles, the MasterChef Junior (少年大厨) contestants (选手) showed what was supposed to be the world’s largest cake. Instead, they made the smallest cake in the world.
What happened to the great cake? They wanted to make a 3, 000-pound cake baked for 35 hours in a 6-foot-wide by 8-foot-deep pan. Sadly, the pan broke up. The chefs quickly came up with the idea to make the world’s smallest cake. But Guinness World Records (吉尼斯世界纪录) will only judge the largest food but not the smallest.
The event was held to improve the new show MasterChef Junior. They hold the competition to open the door for kids interested in cooking. Here’s how it works. Twenty-four chefs, ages 8 to 13, are selected and put through some cooking tests. Contestants are eliminated (淘汰) two at a time until one is finally named MasterChef Junior.
As the kids complete the challenges, some judges (裁判) taught or helped them. They are Gordon Ramsey, Joe Bastianich, and Graham Elliot.
The young cooks didn’t fear the adult judges. “Gordon, Joe and Graham were all really helpful and really knew about what we were doing,” said Tommy from California. He is a 12-year-old contestant on the show.
The exciting chefs agreed that competing on the show taught them useful lessons. They would remember it forever.
