With the rise of the Internet and livestreaming industry (直播行业), many people begin to look for fun online. Watching livestreaming shows has become part of their lives. At the same time, traditional culture has found bigger stage online. Many traditional artists are starting to livestream on Douyin and Bilibili. Some of them sing Peking Opera, some show their folk handcrafts (民间手工艺), while others perform Chinese classical music. A growing number of people are becoming interested in traditional culture because of livestreaming.
Li Jun is a Peking Opera performer with the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company. After the outbreak, the 59 year-old took up his smartphone and started livestreaming. Unlike performing on a formal stage, Li uses ordinary places as his stage, including his backyard and study room. Apart from singing, Li also teaches audience about Peking Opera. People can ask him questions and get answers directly.
“Livestreaming has brought this elegant (高雅的) art down to earth.” one viewer said. “It gives young people an easier access to this traditional art and learn more about it.” Li has more than 6,000 fans on Douyin, while one of his videos got 42,000 views on Bilibili.
On March 26th, 2020, Bilibili livestreamed a Huafu show on the third China Huafu Day (中国华服日). Performers presented clothes in traditional Chinese styles, including those from Wei, Tang and Ming dynasties. During the show, viewers not only enjoyed looking at the clothes, but also watched how performers used ancient styles of make-up.
As Guangming Daily noted, livestreaming has come to a new stage through which traditional culture can be kept alive.

These days, live streaming (网络直播) and short videos have gotten millions of views online. More and more people create and share short videos on popular apps like Douyin and Kuaishou to show parts of their lives.
Using live streaming is popular among the people aged 18 to 35. Even the teachers give lessons by live streaming. Besides leaving reviews on the screen, viewers can also communicate directly with the hosts by buying virtual (虚拟的) gifts such as flowers, toys and cars for them online. The most recent famous example was Dong Yuhui at East Buy (东方甄选). Dong became famous overnight by changing his live streaming room into a language learning classroom. China Daily posted Dong’s story and his unusual way of selling products.
What’s more, live streaming allows users to communicate with strangers and express themselves. A 19-year-old college student called Nic Li says she spends three to four hours each week chatting and singing with viewers through one app called Ingkee. “Sometimes I feel lonely and want to talk to people,” she says. “I feel nice when viewers are paying attention to me.”
However, as there are more than 80 apps and 300 websites for live streaming in China, the Internet regulator (监管机构) almost can’t monitor the content (内容) all the time.
“We support the use of live streaming. But people should be aware (意识到) of the two sides of it,” one of the officials said.

Known as “Xiangmei Xinbao” on Douyin, Zeng now has more than 3 million followers. One of her videos about traditional ways of planting and harvesting rice has attracted more than 300,000 followers.
Zeng used to study fashion design and has worked in some big cities before. In 2019 she returned to her village to care for her sick grandmother. She then found that she could build a career there—by being a live streamer with the help of her cousin.
At the beginning, she didn’t make any money. Zeng’s parents didn’t give her any support until she could stand on her own feet and help people sell their products. She has now sold local agricultural products worth tens of millions of yuan, like fermented tofu, preserved pork and dried sweet potatoes.
“I’m a daughter of the great mountains. I can also be a contributor to rural development in this new time,” she said.
Rural revitalization (振兴) is a key part of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25). Zeng hopes her experience can encourage more young people to return to their rural hometowns and start their own businesses. In 2021, after she became a deputy (代表) of the Loudi Municipal People’s Congress, she put forward a proposal to ensure that “each village has one product and one livestreaming host of its own”. 6 . Do you know about Bee&Flower? It was once a well-known hair care brand (品牌) in China. Many brands like this have “disappeared” because young people don’t know about them. But recently, some old Chinese brands have made a comeback. It’s a good start, but there’s more to it.
In early September, anger over a Chinese makeup brand’s eyebrow pens (眉笔) lit up the internet. Some people thought that they were too expensive as it cost 79 yuan to get three pens. Shortly after, Bee&Flower started to sell three large bottles of hair care products for the same price. It showed that Chinese products could still be cost-effective (划算的).
Many Chinese brands took their chance by selling through livestreaming (直播). What’s more, they also helped sell each other’s products. For example, hosts of sports brand Erke washed their hair with Bee&Flower products on Sept 13, 2023.
Many people can’t stop buying these products. Why? For one thing, they think that the products of these Chinese brands are good to use and don’t cost much. Also, it makes buyers feel proud. They can help these old brands “come back to life” by buying the products. Buyers believe in these brands and will use their money to help them grow.
However, livestreaming events should only be a start. How can brands keep people interested? Good products with good prices. The brands shouldn’t take advantage of people’s trust. They should turn it into a reason to make their products better.

France has made some rules for influencers in the past few months. Influencers need to let people know that they are selling things. They mustn’t sell cigarettes or alcohol. Also, they shouldn’t ask people to join in betting (赌博), such as sports betting. As for makeup, they can use a filter (滤镜) to make things look better if they let people know.
There are about 150,000 influencers in France. The rules worry many of them. If they break any of the rules, then they can end up in prison (监狱) for at most two years. They may also pay about 300,000 euros (about 2,300,000 yuan).
