5 . Some people believe that humans could live on the planet Mars by the year 2100. Our own planet, the Earth, is becoming more and more crowded and polluted because of the rapid increase in population. It is hoped that people could start all over again and build a better world on Mars. Here is what life could be like there.
At present, our spacecrafts are too slow to carry large numbers of passengers to Mars—it would take months. With the development of technology, by the year 2100, the journey might only take about 20 minutes in spacecrafts that travel at the speed of light! However, the spacecrafts would travel so fast that the journey to Mars might be quite uncomfortable. Many people would feel ill.
Humans cannot survive without water, oxygen or food. So far, nobody knows whether there would be enough water or oxygen on Mars for people there. Moreover, scientists are not sure whether plants could grow on Mars. Food would most probably be in the form of pills and would not be so tasty.
Gravity could be another problem. The gravity on Mars is only about three-eighths of that on the Earth. People would have to wear boots that are specially designed to prevent themselves from floating off into space.
Compared with life on the Earth, life on Mars would be better in some ways. People would have more space. They might live in houses with huge comfortable rooms. Also, robots would do most of their work so that they could have more time to relax.
There would probably be no schools on Mars. Every student would have a computer at home connected to an interplanetary network. They would study at online schools with “e-teachers”.
Life on Mars would be interesting as well as challenging.

6 . Oil paper umbrellas, with a history of over 1, 000 years in China, were used by many people in the past. However, steel-ribbed (钢骨的) umbrellas appeared in the last century. And oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life. Instead, they turned into decorative artifacts (工艺品).
Yuhang in Hangzhou is famous for making oil paper umbrellas. The hand-made umbrellas here take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pasting paper (糊纸) and painting pictures. It usually takes at least seven days to make an umbrella.
In 2015, Liu Weixue, left a well-paid job as a designer to learn the traditional art from his grandfather. After mastering the skills, he opened a shop of oil paper umbrellas. Now, he is a master of making oil paper umbrellas. “I want to bring the art to life.” Liu said. To win the hearts of young people, Liu tried to make the umbrellas better. He started to use thicker paper because the traditional paper was easy to break. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed 1, 000 times, but they didn’t break. Also, he used lighter bamboo so that the umbrellas would weigh less. In 2017, Liu opened an online shop to sell umbrellas. It has more than 80, 000 fans.
Liu hopes to pass on traditional art, so he often goes to local schools to teach students. Zhu Tingting took Liu’s class last summer and made an umbrella in class successfully. She said, “Learning how to make oil paper umbrellas means a lot.”
