1 . Tips for Travelling Abroad
Everyone loves travelling abroad. It gives us the chance to see some sights, have some fun and relax. However, travelling isn’t always a great experience. Follow these tips to make sure you enjoy your trip.
Have you packed your passport? Your tickets? Every year, thousands of people miss flights because they’ve forgotten their passports. They arrive at the airports too late, or they even go to the wrong airports!
How much do you know about the place you are going to visit? Learning something about the culture of the foreign city will help you understand the people. Learning a few expressions of another language can also help you make new friends.
Try to reduce the pollution you cause. Travel by train if you can. Flying produces much more carbon dioxide than travelling by train. After you arrive, use buses or trains instead of taxis.
You can help a local community a lot by staying in local hotels and eating in local restaurants. This means that your money will go to local people rather than to a large international company.
You don’t want to forget your trips. Make a scrapbook — a book of memories about your trips. You can show it to friends, or just use it to remember all the good times you had! And don’t forget the new friends you made during your trips. Did you promise to send them pictures or presents? Don’t forget to do it. Then next time you go on a trip, you can visit them again.

4 . When people say “culture”, we think of art and history. But one very famous symbol in American culture is a cartoon. We all know and love the black mouse with two large round ears—Mickey Mouse. Over 80 years ago, he appeared in the cartoon Steamboat Willie. When this cartoon came out in New York on 18 November, 1928, it was the first cartoon with sound and music. The man behind Mickey was Walt Disney. He became very rich and successful. In the 1930s, he made 87 cartoons with Mickey.
Some people might ask how this cartoon animal became so popular. One of the main reasons is that Mickey was like a common man, but he always tried to face any danger. In his early films, Mickey was unlucky and had many problems such as losing his house or girlfriend, Minnie. However, he was always ready to try his best. People went to the cinema to see the “little man” win. Most of them wanted to be like Mickey.
On 18 November, 1979, Mickey became the first cartoon character to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Today’s cartoons are usually not so simple as little Mickey Mouse, but everyone still knows and loves him. Who with a pair of ears is more famous than Mickey?

5 . There is no doubt that technology has had a big influence on our lives. People from all around the world can now talk to each other almost at once on mobile phones and the Internet. People can easily solve their problems with the help of computers and the World Wide Web. With the technology, it seems that the world is more connected now than ever before. Even so, there have been worries about technology making people feel lonely and disconnected from others around them.
So does this mean that technology makes us lonely?
In my opinion, it is hard to say “Yes” or “No”.
It’s true that humans need communication with each other. If we depend on technology too much to communicate, this can badly impact our mental (心理的) health. For me, technology is a tool. And just like any other kind of tool—like scissors, a pencil or a ruler. For example, it depends on how we use it: in a right way or in a right place. Take social media (社交媒体) as an example. If you only use it to compare yourself with others, you might feel sad and lonely. But if you use it as a tool to connect with friends and family or to start a new community to talk about your hobbies and interests, the loneliness will turn into love and friendship.
When you feel lonely after staring at your computer screen all day, maybe you can use that technology to reach out to a reliable (可靠的) friend and invite him or her out for lunch or a coffee.
