That is why the elderly are pleased with the emergence of community canteens, which have solved dining headaches and support their health. “I can have a meat dish, a vegetable dish and a bowl of rice for only 20 yuan—all very healthy. They have a home-cooked taste,” said Fang Wenjing in Hangzhou.

“My son and daughter-in-law are always busy. They worry that I may forget to switch off the gas when cooking,” said 88-year-old Liu Zongyan. “They are relieved because the canteen serves healthy food and the volunteers are friendly.”

“I feel lonely at home,” said an elderly man who has been widowed for over 10 years. “But at the canteen, I have friends.” The canteens not only fill empty stomachs but also empty hearts.

The rise of community canteens couldn’t have happened without the work of governments. They provide subsidies (补贴) for building the canteens as well as the dining cost of the elderly. There are now more than 6,700 community canteens in China, according to Tianyancha, a database company.

Chongqing International Logistics Hub Park (物流园区) was set up in September, 2007. It is the starting point for the China-Europe Railway Express. The area is 22 square kilometers. As a housing area for the workers of a big factory, it was really crowded and old. At the start of 2022, the Minzhucun Neighborhood started to renovate (更新). It was designed together with nearby neighborhoods. To make the environment better, builders kept some old buildings, improved many of them, and removed the dangerous ones, In the Minzhucun Neighborhood, the culture and building styles are kept, and the old city’s shape and feel go on. Long bluestone steps, red brick houses, and big Camphor trees are now part of its new city memories. Walking through the neighborhood, one can feel the beauty of old and new things together, inspiring hope for a bright future.

Chongqing’s Digital City Management Center is in Jiangbei. This is a big center in Chongqing city that helps control and run the city. It’s like a brain for the city. 9 . Jo March sat in the corner of the big sofa, writing busily. Her inkstand (墨水台) was a broken teacup, and she sharpened her pencil with her teeth when it refused to write.
