文章大意:本文是一篇应用文。文章主要为学生们介绍了可以改善考前焦虑的四个活动。

Students will face the pre-exam anxiety in the exam season. But in a growing tradition, universities and students’ unions are making increasingly great efforts to try to deal with stress.

Screaming: This is a tradition for students in the United States. Harvard, Northwestern and Columbia all have lessons of stress bursting screaming. At Northwestern in Illinois, students scream on the Sunday evening before finals week. At Wisconsin, the university headmaster took part in the screaming and social media even invited people to join in.

Puppies: Partnering with a local guide dog charity in the UK, the University of Central Lancashire has a “puppy room” for stressed students. Students made a reservation in advance and were given 10 minutes to 15 minutes to play with the dogs, in exchange for a £1.50 minimum donation to the charity. “We are delighted to raise awareness of the Guide Dogs charity as well as to help students through a stressful period,” said a students’ union representative.

Sleep contest: Even sleeping has to be competitive in South Korea. At Duksung Women’s University in Seoul, students are dealing with exam stress by a competition to see which students can fall into the deepest sleep. They have blankets, pillows and eye masks, in an event sending the message that getting a good night’s sleep is an important part of relaxing.

Small pigs: Students at the University of Exeter in the UK are being offered small pigs to help ease their exam fears. A small pig helps those who lack academic confidence. The student newspaper promises that students will be very excited while playing with pigs.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了作者离开马戏团后的人生经历,以及作者如何将马戏团的经验应用于广播行业,并成为新闻记者,但马戏还是萦绕在作者心头。

I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团). Until that point, I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus, by its nature, is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.

But years later, I found areas that interested me. I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston’s news station WBUR offered me a job out of college, I jumped at the chance. Along the way, I found I really enjoyed the work. I became WBUR’s news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I’d learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation — whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston, or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.

But then a serious infectious disease appeared. Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life, I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me, the circus symbolizes who I am. And stages have always been where I’ve felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.

Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status (地位), and even language. It’s the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone — help anyone forget their troubles for 5, 10, and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me, it means coming home.

4. How did the author feel in the early years of school?
A.Curious.B.Unfree.C.Loose.D.Impatient.
5. What do we know about the author’s job at WBUR?
A.He did it for his father.B.He did it against his will.
C.He risked his neck doing it.D.He took to it like a duck to water.
6. What does the circus probably mean to the author?
A.A means of living.B.A chance to go anywhere.
C.A part of his identity.D.A way to forget his troubles.
7. Why does the author write the text?
A.To express his love for circus performances.
B.To stress the value of performing.
C.To share his personal experiences in a circus.
D.To discuss the problem of choosing a job.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。这篇文章介绍了猎杀大象可能是由需求驱动的,而不是贪婪造成的。

Poaching (偷猎) is a major cause of decline for elephants, with a total decrease to about 415,000, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

The research team found that poaching occurred more frequently in Central Africa and near the Mozambique-Tanzania border. In recent years, Garamba National Park, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, saw more than 860 elephants die at the hands of poachers, and Selous Game Reserve, in Tanzania, more than 750. Researchers discovered that the household wealth of those surrounding areas was relatively low and they hold a mid-level health.

Researchers said, “Illegal killings are driven by criminal networks who recruit poachers rather than by opportunistic hunters. When a lot of Africa’s national parks were established, people were often forced to be evicted from the land that was now designated a protected area. Local people who had been lived on hunting suddenly became described as poachers.”

“People living within about five miles of wildlife protected area in Tanzania also reported losing up to half their income. A local survey showed the destruction of their crops by elephants and killings of their livestock by lions.” Someone added, “If you’re closest to the park, you really do suffer more cost than benefit of the protected area.”

Researchers also noted, “When local communities enjoy the benefits of conservation, it will reduce incentives (诱因) to poach. When governments ensure that local communities are not subject to carrying the burden of the costs associated with this wildlife, they will have more access to income-generating opportunities that can help to lift communities out of poverty.”

Conservationists have to think creatively, carrying out strategies such as reducing demand in ivory-consuming countries, improving educational standards and medical facilities, and increasing support for wildlife rangers. “When we are looking to protect wildlife, we can’t do that without thinking about the well-being of people,” researchers said.

8. What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 imply?
A.Elephants mainly appear in Africa.
B.Poachers have found the track of elephants.
C.Elephants living in the protected area are facing a decline.
D.Hundreds of elephants in Africa die at the hands of poachers.
9. What does the underlined phrase “be evicted from” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Leave.B.Return.C.Wander.D.Seek.
10. Which of the following statement is NOT true about poaching?
A.Elephants poaching is likely driven by need, not greed.
B.Household wealth of people in the protected area is relatively high.
C.Wildlife protection and people’s well-being should go hand in hand.
D.People living close to the wildlife reserve lose nearly half their income.
11. Where is this passage most probably taken from?
A.A health column.B.A travel brochure.
C.A geographic magazine.D.A news story.

文章大意:本文是议论文,文章探讨了表演形式对演员心理健康的影响。

Acting as an art form has changed a great deal over the centuries. It’s no longer just about entertaining an audience in a stylised way to depict (刻画) characters and events that everyone is familiar with. Nowadays, acting has moved into a world of hyper realism. Audiences often expect to be challenged by a performance, and acting asks sometimes difficult questions about the world around us.

Given this change in emphasis, what kind of toll (损害) might acting take on somebody’s well-being? The idea that there is a psychological price to pay for good acting is nothing new, yet there is surprisingly little scientific research that examines the issue. Many scientists have been unwilling to examine the relationship in depth. This is changing, however, with academics now starting to investigate it further.

Actors often agree that performing can come with risks. Deborah Margolin, an award-winning actor, found the line between her stage self and her real personality started to blur (变模糊) the deeper into the character she went. She felt a real emotional impact especially when she played difficult or unpleasant roles. Margolin explains, “It was depressing...my character would cry, and I would cry.” She recalls the impact on her fellow actors: “Everybody backed away from me. These were lovely peopleI loved them dearlybut my character was unattractive and somehow, so was I.”

These feelings are easy to understand, and would seem to be a natural outcome of acting styles such as “method acting”, which encourages actors to use their real-life experiences to fuel a role. There are some, however, who disagree. Actor Sanford Meisner felt that an actor’s most important tool is their imagination and that psychology has no place in performance. In fact, many performers mix these different methods and keep in touch with family to reconnect with the person beyond their character.

There’s no doubt that walking a tightrope between personalities can be a difficult task, however. As drama student Naomi Lorrain explains, “It can be hard. Offstage, you have to remember that it’s unreal and onstage you have to forget...”

12. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to ?
A.The relationship between audiences and actors.
B.The relationship between old acting styles and new ones.
C.The connection between good acting and actors’ mental health.
D.The connection between actors’ personalities and those of the characters they play.
13. Why did Margolin mention her fellow actors?
A.To show how acting influences her real life.
B.To explain why she is only understood by them.
C.To argue acting is a challenging job for her.
D.To prove they use a different acting style from her.
14. What might Meisner agree with according to paragraph 4?
A.Actors should have rich social experiences.
B.Actors’ performances need creative imagination.
C.Actors should mix their real life with performance.
D.Actors’ mental problems should be given more attention.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.To be or not to be?
B.No pains, no gains
C.Acting can change your brain
D.How to play a role successfully?
