Have you ever received an unwanted gift and still said “thank you”? This choice to hide a negative emotion is a display rule-one of many which define socially appropriate responses to emotions. Although display rules can promote interpersonal harmony, they can also have negative consequences for the person choosing to change how they express emotions. As more social interaction goes online, scientists are investigating how emojis are used to reflect our emotions in different contexts. Are there display rules that apply to emojis, and how do those affect people’s well-being?
Moyu Liu of the University of Tokyo investigated this question in a study published in Frontiers in Psychology. For his study, Liu found 1,289 participants, all users of the most-downloaded emoji keyboard in Japan, Simeji, to investigate how emojis were used to express or mask emotions.
The participants in Liu’s study provided personal information, answered questions about their subjective well-being, and rated how often they used emojis. They were given messages with varying social contexts, responded to them as they would normally, and rated the intensity of the expression of their emotions.
Liu found that people chose to express more emotions with emojis in private contexts or with close friends. Respondents expressed least emotion towards individuals who hold a higher social position. Intense expressions of emotion came with matching emojis, unless people felt the need to mask their true emotions: for instance, using smiling emojis to mask negative emotions. Negative emojis were used only where negative feelings were very strongly felt. Expressing emotions with emojis was associated with higher subjective well-being compared to masking emotions.
Liu emphasized that the study should be expanded in the future. The Simeji keyboard is extremely popular among young women, which caused an imbalance in the sample towards women and Generation Z. However, this also reflected the gender imbalance in use of emojis in general and the Simejikey board in particular. A broader pool of participants would provide a fuller picture of the display rules around emojis.

When a passionate reader closes the covers of a book, she takes a moment or two to emerge from that universe to the world of the living. Often, a part of the reader stays behind in the bookish universe thinking, “What if Harry Potter had been sorted into Slytherin? What if Charlie had decided to make noodles in his chocolate factory? What if Pippi Longstocking’s dad came back from the pirate islands?”
Fanfiction (同人小说) emerges from this rich world of what-ifs. It involves writing extended stories about literary characters or plots from the universe of books as well as TV and film. However, fanfiction is much more than an extension of the original. It is a genre (体裁) created by passionate writers. And since young fans are emotionally invested in the universe of these books, writing fanfiction is a great way to get younger readers to take their first steps in writing as well as creative expression in the form of any other media.
I see this happening frequently when I’m asked to judge writing competitions in schools. Children write stories that are most often set in some Western or fantasy land, the characters have names like Julian and Hazel, and there are plenty of other references that are clearly drawn from the books they have loved. I would initially point these out and recommend that children draw stories from the reality around them, but I soon stopped. I realized that imitating our favorite writers is the first step in developing a voice of our own.
And that is where fanfiction becomes the starting point in children’s writing journey. To get them started, as parents or adults, we can talk to children about the books they love, question them with what-ifs and encourage them to voice their views through writing. Once they finish their writing, encourage them to share it with other fans. Fanfiction writers share their work on online writing communities like Fanfiction.net, Archive of Our Own (AO3), Commaful, etc.

Not all fat is created equal. The fat most people picture is known as white fat, since it looks white or white-yellow when you see it under the skin. But you’re also born with brown fat, which, unsurprisingly, looks brown.
Brown fat — found in the neck and shoulders of newborns — is metabolically (新陈代谢地) efficient, in that it burns lots of calories, which serves the purpose of keeping you warm (important for newborns). We lose most of our brown fat as we age. By age six, we have less than five percent of the brown fat we were born with; the fat we gain over time is almost all white fat. One of the major causes of shortened lifetime and illnesses like type 2 diabetes and many cancers is the increasing level of white fat. So scientists have long tried to find ways to activate that fat or turn white fat into brown fat.
However, one roadblock to using brown fat is that all the good stuff that brown fat does has to be programmed into the previously white fat, but that has proved doable. A group in Delaware has activated brown fat in a few women with an already approved medication. Researchers at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) have put white fat in test tubes and turned it into brown fat. They then injected the brown fat into fat sheep. As hoped, the sheep with more brown fat got thin and lost their metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
The timetable for this game-changing ability to turn white fat to brown fat is predicted to be less than five years away after human studies start. If scientists find a way to replace white fat with brown fat, it will likely mitigate risks of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and brain disorder greatly and provide increased energy levels. That is, you become operationally younger. Bring it on!
12. What is the problem with brown fat?A.It decreases quickly with age. | B.It can lead to many illnesses. |
C.It functions poorly in newborns. | D.It can slow down the metabolism. |
A.It originates from white fat. | B.It can be activated by medication. |
C.It may be the key to weight loss. | D.It has to work with white fat. |
A.Assess. | B.Reduce. | C.Identify. | D.Involve. |
A.Make the best of white fat | B.Activating brown fat vs changing white fat |
C.This good fat could keep you healthy | D.Brown fat helps keep babies warm |
How to Apologize to a Friend
When you offend or hurt a friend, it tests your friendship.
Recognize that what you did was wrong, and take full responsibility. Before you can apologize, you must first recognize that you have hurt or wronged your friend. No matter what the circumstances were, acknowledge that you made a mistake, and take responsibility for your actions.
Act quickly. Though you may feel it wise to let your friend have a little bit of time to cool off, you shouldn’t wait too long. The longer you wait, the more difficult it will be to apologize. Moreover, by waiting, you might rationalize (为……找借口) that what you did wasn’t that terrible after all.
Listen. After apologizing and asking for forgiveness, listen quietly to your friend’s response.
A.Apologize in person. |
B.Offer a letter of apology. |
C.Allow your friend to express his /her pain or anger. |
D.Don’t try to share the blame with others or make excuses. |
E.Tell your friend how much your relationship means to you |
F.You might convince yourself that you don’t really need to apologize. |
G.However, apologizing for a wrongdoing can actually strengthen your relationship. |

Tom and Jane planned a holiday at the lake, and they decided to take their children, Tim and Sarah, with them. However, Tim and Sarah wanted: to visit Disney World for their holiday or hire a yacht (游艇) in Hawaii. Camping by the lake wasn’t even on their list of holiday adventures.
“We can visit some of the islands too,” Jane said. “Your dad and I always wanted to explore the mysterious cabin on Moose Island.”
Mysterious cabin? The children were now far more interested in this lake holiday idea.
“We might see Big foot,” Tim said.
“Or some unusual species!” Sarah turned to her parents. “We’re in. When do we leave?”
The children’s excitement quickly disappeared when they arrived at the lake. While their parents were carrying their suitcases inside, Timand Sarah stood on the path and stared at the cabin they’d be staying in for the next week, complaining about the smell around, the dust, and the various small insects.
“We’re in nature now, kids. Enjoy the experience! Your dad is building a fire so we can have barbecued fish and potatoes baked in the coals. Isn’t that great?”
Sarah choked. “I am not eating food cooked in coals! I want takeaway instead.”
“Me too.” Tim was about to cry. “Holidays are supposed to be fun, Mom.”
“Come on, guys. There’s a lot of joy to be found in living a simple life and spending time together as a family.”
“People in the suburbs live a simple life, which is more like being homeless!” Sarah shouted
“Yeah,” Tim added. “How can there not be a single restaurant that delivers here? How do these people survive?”
“They eat coal potatoes!” Sarah laughed. “And fish they kill with their bare hands!”
Sarah ran away, and Tim followed. Jane buried her head in her hands. She realized she had to do something to correct their children’s attitude towards simple life. After dinner, she told all about this to Tom, who agreed with Jane. Then they came up with an idea.
