What goes up must come down, right? Well, try doing an experiment with a cup of water that stays inside the glass when held upside down. You’ll need the help of some cardboard and a little bit of air pressure.

What you’ll need:

♦ A glass filled right to the top with water

♦ A piece of cardboard

Instructions:

♦ Put the cardboard over the mouth of the glass, making sure that no air bubbles enter the glass as you hold onto the cardboard.

♦ Turn the glass upside down(over a sink or outside until you get good).

♦ Take away your hand holding the cardboard.

What’s happening?

If all goes to the plan, then the cardboard and water should stay put. Even though the cup of water is upside down, the water stays in place, defying gravity! So why is this happening? With no air inside the glass, the air pressure from outside the glass is greater than the pressure of the water inside the glass. The extra air pressure manages to hold the cardboard in place, keeping you dry and your water staying where it should be, inside the glass.

1. What kind of experiment is the passage about?
A.A physics experiment.B.A chemistry experiment.
C.A biology experiment.D.A language experiment.
2. What is the first step to do the experiment?
A.Turn the glass upside down.
B.Take your hand away from the glass.
C.Put the cardboard over the mouth of the glass.
D.Make sure that there are no air bubbles in the glass.
3. What may happen if you take away your hand holding the cardboard?
A.The water pours out of the glass.B.The glass breaks into pieces.
C.The water still stays in the glass.D.The glass has less water.

It was 1994, and a new mother took her sick baby to the doctor. After being tested, the child was diagnosed (诊断) with CF (包囊纤维化), a serious disease. The girl would be lucky to survive into her twenties. The woman and her husband did not know what to do.

She turned to two friends — football star Boomer Esiason and his wife Cheryl, who knew a lot about CF since they had a son with it. They’d been trying to raise money for the CF Foundation (基金会), and they were heading their own foundation then. The woman called the Esiasons right away and they shared with her everything they knew about the illness.

She was changed, and put her whole heart into understanding CF. She learned how to use the treatments that would best give her daughter hope. She learned about other challenges about CF. Though 30,000 Americans suffer from the illness, the number was too small to motivate(激励) drug companies to do research. The CF market could not get enough investment (投资) for the government to make up the millions needed to develop new drugs.

So she gave up her job and jumped into the CF business full time. She now takes part in events organized by the CF Foundation, and gives speeches wherever she can. The money she raises goes to the CF Foundation, letting it employ scientists to study the disease. Her name is Angela Kinney. Thanks to the many people just like her, the average lifespan (寿命) of a child born with CF has jumped to 36.5 years.

4. From the passage we can learn that Cheryl was ________.
A.a doctor studying CFB.a member of the CF Foundation
C.a person with CFD.a football star
5. What did the Esiasons do to help Angela Kinney?
A.They told her what they knew about CF.B.They offered her a job.
C.They offered her money.D.They taught her how to comfort the child.
6. Why wasn’t there enough research on CF?
A.The government was unwilling to invest in it.
B.There were no researchers studying it.
C.Drug companies found it hard to do research.
D.The number of CF patients was too small.
7. Which of the following best describes Angela Kinney?
A.Clever and changeable.B.Responsible and honest.
C.Brave and warm-hearted.D.Helpful and open-minded.

Although we're surrounded by millions of them every day, most of us don't think about bricks too often. For thousands of years, the humble clay-fired brick hasn't changed.

They're made from natural materials, but there are problems with bricks at every step of their production. Bricks are made from clay-a type of soil found all over the world.Clay mining harms plant growth. In conventional brick production, the clay is shaped and baked in kilns(窑)heated by fossil fuels, which contributes to climate change.Once made, bricks must be transported to construction sites, generating more carbon emissions. With so many bricks produced globally, their impact adds up.

Gabriela Medero,a professor at Scotland's Heriot-Watt University, decided to find solutions to that. With her university's support,Medero set up Kenoteq in 2009.The company's signature product is the K-Briq.Made from more than 90% construction waste,Medero says the K-Briq- which does not need to be fired in a kiln-produces less than a tenth of the carbon emissions of conventional bricks. With the company testing new machinery to start manufacturing,Medero hopes her bricks will help to build a more sustainable world.

The K-Briq will be comparably priced to old bricks.Additionally,as a new product, the K-Briq has been subjected to strict assessment and authoritative certification.Reusing old bricks is an expensive process and there is no standardized way to check the strength, safety or durability(耐久性)of recycled bricks.Medero says that K-Briqs could solve both these problems. She claims that K-Briqs are stronger and more durable than fired clay bricks.

Over the next 18 months,Medero plans to get K-Briq machinery on-site at recycling plants."This will reduce transport-related emissions because trucks can collect K-Briqs when they drop off construction waste,"says Medero.

8. What inspired Medero to reinvent the conventional bricks?
A.The poor quality of the bricks.
B.The outdated style of the bricks.
C.The high cost of manufacturing bricks.
D.The problems with the brick production.
9. Why is the K-Briq production sustainable?
A.It won't produce extra waste.
B.It brings no pollution to the air.
C.The plants occupy much less land than before.
D.The products are mainly made from construction waste.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The popularity of the K-Briqs.
B.The advantages of K-Briqs over traditional bricks.
C.The special materials used in K-Briqs.
D.The advanced technology used for K-Briqs.
11. Why does Medero decide to put K-Briq machines at recycling factories?
A.To ensure fewer emissions.
B.To speed up the production.
C.To lower the production cost.
D.To collect more construction waste.

Many children first learn the value of money by receiving an allowance. The purpose is to let children learn from experience at an age when financial mistakes are not very costly.

The amount of money that parents give to their children to spend as they wish differs from family to family. Timing is another consideration. Some children get a weekly allowance. Others get a monthly allowance.

In any case, parents should make clear what, if anything, the child is expected to pay for with the money.

At first, young children may spend all of their allowance soon after they receive it. If they do this, they will learn the hard way that spending must be done within a budget. Parents are usually advised not to offer more money until the next allowance.

The object is to show young people that a budget demands choices between spending and saving. Older children may be responsible enough to save money for larger costs, like clothing or electronics.

Many people who have written on the subject of allowances say it is not a good idea to pay your child for work around the home. These jobs are a normal part of family life.

Paying children to do extra work around the house, however, can be useful. It can even provide an understanding of how a business works.

Allowances give children a chance to experience the three things they can do with money. They can share it in the form of gifts or giving it to a good cause. They can spend it by buying things they want. Or they can save it.

12. What is special about children learning financial management by experience?
A.They learn more quickly.
B.They are not as likely to make mistakes.
C.Their mistakes won't matter so much.
D.They have plans made by their parents.
13. When the writer says some young children "will learn the hard way that..." in Para. 4, he means ________ .
A.they will know how hard it is to learn budget
B.they will have an easy time learning the lesson
C.what they will learn is absolutely true
D.their parents will teach them a hard lesson
14. Judging from the article, it is all right if a couple give their son an allowance ________ .
A.regularly twice every month
B.whenever he has run out of money
C.telling him to ask for permission before spending
D.without telling him what to spend on
15. The writer would agree to encourage the kids to ________ to deal with a tight budget.
A.borrow money from othersB.ask their parents for more money
C.get paid for their household routinesD.earn money by extra work
