One of the best-loved American writers was William Sydney Porter, or O. Henry. From 1893 he lived with his family in a house in Austin, Texas, which is now a museum. Visitors to Austin can see the house. It was saved from destruction and turned into a museum in1934. The museum is a good way to learn about the interesting life of the American writer.

William Porter rented this house in Austin and lived there with his wife Athol and daughter Margaret for about two years. Many objects in the museum belonged to the Porters. Others did not. An important piece in the room is the original photograph over here. It was taken there in the house about 1895. The piano there goes back to the 1860s. His wife took lessons on it when she first moved to Austin.

Porter did not start his career as a successful writer. He worked at a farm, land office and bank. He also loved words and writing. The museum has a special proof of Porter’s love of language ——his dictionary. It is said that he had read every word in that dictionary.

Later William Porter was forced to leave Austin because he was charged(控告 )with financial wrongdoing at the bank and lost his job. Because he was afraid of a trail, he left the country secretly. But he returned because his wife was dying. After her death, he faced the trial and became a criminal(罪犯). He served three and a half years in a prison in Ohio.

William Porter would keep his time in prison a secret. But there was one good thing about it. It provided him with time to write. 【推荐1】Long school holidays help students clear their heads, relax a little and stretch their brains in different ways.

Traditionally, schooling schedules have long been based more on the needs of society than on education strategies(策略). For example, in Iceland it was traditionally arranged to allow children to help out with harvest. Other countries have long summer vacations because it is simply too hot to study. In other areas where religion plays an important role in the holiday season, the religion calendar then calls for the break, so that students can have enough time to participate in the religious ceremonies(仪式) and traditions of seasonal holidays.

There are some obvious advantages to a vacation that lasts longer. Families who live a long distance from relatives are able to travel together, sometimes across the ocean, in order to connect with their loved ones. Even if there is no visiting family far away, a long holiday is a great opportunity for kids to interact with the people. From an educational point of view, a child that is able to experience another culture can gain valuable language, history, and social skills.

Long school holidays are also needed in schools that have become overly academic and too exam-focused in recent years, which requires a considerably longer holiday break from such a “marathon pumping (灌输) of knowledge,” and it makes great sense!

Great psychologists, like Freud and Piaget, have stressed play’s central role in the formation of fully-rounded (全面发展的) individuals, so the long holiday achieves this by allowing students to explore the world outside school. The students get to participate in activities that would be difficult to do during a normal school term.

As a consequence, long school holiday can be quite useful to our students!

1. What traditionally determines the arrangement of school holidays?
A.Local needs.B.Cultural activities.
C.Religious customs.D.Academic performance.
2. Which is one of the advantages of long holidays?
A.Students run away from exams.
B.Family bonds are strengthened.
C.Fewer courses are required at school.
D.Children can learn science and history.
3. Freud and Piaget may probably agree that ______ .
A.holiday activities are necessary
B.schools need longer holidays
C.play is more important than learning
D.students should travel around the world
4. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Traditional School Holidays
B.Activities for Long Holidays
C.Benefits of Long Holidays
D.Advice from Psychologists

【推荐2】Many people write to newspapers and magazines to express their opinions. Letters to editors must carry the writer’s full name, address and telephone number, although the information is not necessary for publication. This requirement to provide personal particulars is a clear indication that writers are held responsible for what they say. When a writer wants his voice heard, he needs to claim ownership of his voice. Responsibility is the name of the game.

“People today prefer living together to putting their signatures on a marriage certificate because they refuse to accept responsibility for the relationship,” said social worker Ken Yip, “and this is what is causing a lot of family problems.” When we sign a paper, for example, a business contract or a bank document, the signature is a seal of consent, an agreement to take the matter seriously. Most governments and many organizations will not process written complaints if they do not bear the writer’s signature. The absence of a signature, they explain, tells us that the writer cannot be too serious and therefore does not deserve a reply.

There are people who wish to remain anonymous for various reasons. Multi-billionaire Mr. King donates generously to charity several times a year. He gives simply because he wants to help but not for the publicity his donations may bring, and he does not want his good deeds to make the news. In other cases, people insist on anonymity because they are afraid of the consequences of revealing their identity. Crime witnesses may be willing to assist the police, but most are unwilling to give their names when reporting a crime.

Anonymous or not? The answer is very personal and lies in how much we want to get involved. We all have a name. It is a matter of responsibility to use it when we make a statement, a claim or an accusation. We all want to honor our own name, and it is only by stamping our expression of an opinion with our own name that we honor what we say.

1. What does the sentence “Responsibility is the name of the game” mean in the first paragraph?
A.Names are required to indicate writers’ responsibility for what they say.
B.Publication must bear the writer’s full name, address and phone number.
C.Writers should be responsible for their names.
D.Writers need to provide their personal information in the game.
2. The second paragraph suggests that a paper without a signature may ________ .
A.help to end a relationshipB.not get a reply
C.be taken care of all the sameD.become a family problem
3. Some people don’t want their names known because they are ________.
A.hesitant to make a donationB.afraid of an accusation
C.unwilling to draw public attentionD.ready for involvement
4. The passage is mainly about________.
A.honor and writersB.identity and signature
C.anonymity and publicityD.signature and responsibility

【推荐3】The cheongsam is a female dress with distinctive Chinese features and enjoys a growing popularity in the international world of high fashion.

The name “cheongsam”, meaning simply “long dress”, entered the English vocabulary from the dialect of China’s Guangdong Province(Cantonese). In other parts of the country including Beijing, however, it is known as “Qi Pao”, which has a history behind it.

When the early Manchu rulers came to China properly, they organized certain people, mainly Manchus, into “banners” (qi) and called them “banner people”(qi ren), which then became loosely the name of all Manchus. The Manchu women wore normally a one-piece dress which, like-wise, came to be called “qi pao” or “banner dress”. Although the 1911 Revolution toppled the rule of the Qing(Manchu) Dynasty, the female dress survived the political change and, with later improvements, has become the traditional dress for Chinese women.

Easy to slip on and comfortable to wear, the cheongsam fits well the female Chinese figure. Its neck is high, collar closed, and its sleeves may be either short or full-length, depending on season and taste.

The dress is buttoned on the right side, with a loose chest, a fitting waist, and slits up from the sides, all of which combine to set off the beauty of the female shape.

The cheongsam is not too complicated to make. Nor does it call for too much material, for there are no accessories like belts, scarves, sashes or frills to go with it.

Another beauty of the cheongsam is that, made of different materials and to varying lengths, they can be worn either on casual or formal occasions. In either case, it creates an impression of simple and quiet charm, elegance and neatness. No wonder it is so much liked by women not only of China but of foreign countries as well.
