Mathematics is not as challenging as it may seem; on the contrary, it is both straightforward and appealing, functioning as a useful instrument in practical applications.
Mathematics serves as the foundation for all sciences, providing a framework for understanding the basic principles of the natural world. From physics and chemistry to bi ology and economics, mathematical ideas and formulas are like essential threads (线) woven (编织) into the exploration of science. Without a solid understanding of mathematics, it becomes challenging to figure out the mysteries of the universe and make meaningful contributions to various scientific fields.
As a matter of fact, the main reason why many people do not excel in mathematics is the widespread worry and unease. According to a survey by the National Science Foundation, nearly 60% of adults struggle with basic mathematical concepts. Overcoming this challenge requires a shift in mental attitude, emphasizing the importance of embracing mistakes as part of the learning process. Additionally, incorporating real-life applications and interactive methods into math education can enhance understanding and foster a positive learning environment.
For the development of the world, encouraging everyone to embrace the beauty of mathematics is more important than anything else. Rather than giving in to the belief that mathematics is never possible to conquer, individuals should approach it with curiosity and enthusiasm. By recognizing the practical applications of mathematics in everyday life and its indispensable role in advancing scientific knowledge, one can unlock its potential for personal and intellectual growth. Let us drive away the myth that mathematics is an abstract and useless subject, and instead, let’s embrace it as a powerful tool that opens doors to new possibilities and insights.

A New Jersey native, Frances Chan, who is 5’2” and weighs 90 lbs, claims she’s been forced to feed herself Cheetos and ice cream in an attempt to add flesh to her tiny frame after the Ivy League school became convinced she was suffering from an eating disorder.
Chan said the college wouldn’t even let up (松劲) when her parents confirmed she and the rest of her family had always been naturally skinny.
“I felt really bad to be this powerless,” Chan told the New Haven Register. “I ate ice cream twice a day. I ate cookies. I used elevators instead of walking up stairs. But I don’t really gain any weight.”
She said the battle over her weight began when she noticed a lump (肿块) in her breast and went to get it checked out. The lump turned out to be not dangerous to health, but Yale doctors called her in for a follow-up appointment because they had other concerns.
In the meeting, they told her she was dangerously underweight and forced her to put on weight as a rule. Chan tried to follow the school’s request and put on weight but she only managed to gain two pounds. However, the university said that wouldn’t do.
Angry, helpless and distracted from her studies, Chan decided to pen an essay about her experience to The Huffington Post. In it she explained that she had been small since high school, but it had never led to any illnesses related to low weight or a state of poor nutrition.
She claimed the university’s blind use of body mass index(BMI) as a yardstick of a healthy weight is where they were going wrong.
She learned that her new doctor acknowledged BMI was not the only measure of a healthy weight and admitted the college had “made a mistake” in how they handled her thin frame.

Today’s college students have the chance to take a lot of special, even strange classes. Here are some of them.
Joy of Garbage
This class may sound like a “waste”, but the joy of Garbage class at Santa Clara University researches into the science and results of what humans eat and throw away. Students follow the path of trash as it’s treated, burned, reused, and they look at the environmental problems that arise. The class even goes tolocal sanitation(卫生)factories to explore and develops green methods for modern waste problems.
Learning from YouTube
Unlike most college courses, the Learning from YouTube course of Pitzer College is open to the public. While the class is fairly open, there is one big rule: All class-work, homework and discussions must take place on YouTube. The class meetings and other documents are even posted on the video-sharing site.
Daytime Serials
Are all those afternoon classes preventing you from staying up to date with "Days of Our Lives"? No worries. Just sign up for the University of Wisconsin’s Daytime Serials course. Students in this class watch daytime plays, discuss their storiesand study the social effects of men's and women's roles on the family and the workplace.
Superheros
How do you change physics into a more exciting subject? The University of California does so by studying the science behind superheroes like Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman. For example, students examine the physics of flying by studying Spider-Man.
Fat Studies
The Fat Studies course at George Washington University teaches students to think of body size critically(批判性地). It has a goal of developing weight acceptance among people of all shapes and sizes.

In the first two lines of the five, the writer is comparing the life of a man with the changing face of the moon. In Chinese culture the moon is always considered to be a perfect carrier of emotions like nostalgia (怀旧) and longing for family reunion. A full moon symbolizes perfection and unity, while a gloomy night may remind people of their misfortunes. When the moon is round and fair but people are separated from their loved ones, such moments can be even more heartbreaking.
Before the comparison, the poet actually complains about the seemingly “ruthless(无情的)” moon and asks her: You should have no spite (怨恨) against man, but why. When people part, are you often full and bright? However, he soon realizes that no one has an easy ride, just like the moon may not always be bright. The imperfections have been going on since the beginning of time. That's why he says "There has been nothing perfect since the olden days."
But should we get bogged down(陷入) by the suffering of things with which we can't change? The poet gives his answer: Change your attitude and stay positive. So, we have this everlasting line,"May we all be blessed with a long life; miles apart, we’ll share the beauty, of moon together." The poet hopes that people appreciate the fact that no matter where they are, as long as the ones they love and miss are healthy and happy, they can all admire the same moon high in the sky.
To this day people still use this verse to express their good will and wishes for family members and friends who can't be with them, especially during major festivals.
