During the Spring and Autumn period, there was a great singer in the State (诸侯国) of Han. People called her Han E.

One year, Han E went to the State of Qi but soon ________ money. In order to earn (赚得) some money, Han E went to the city gate of Qi’s capital and sang there. Everyone who heard her song was deeply ________ by her gentle voice. Even after Han E left the city gate, the audience (听众) there was still lost in her ________. Her beautiful song seemed to linger (萦绕) there for three days afterwards.

A tour of Shanghai street food

A first-time visitor to Shanghai wants to try some local snacks. Do you have any idea where to take him? Sure, you can find some of the country’s best xiaolongbao or shengjianbao in town. But the city offers a lot of delicious foods other than just these.

Since February, Zhang Hao has been painting on the streets. He has completely changed the look of an alley (小巷) in Chengdu with his beautiful mural (壁画) art pieces. Zhang did it out of love.

“This alley is the closest way from my home to the subway station. It is very dark at night. My girlfriend once told me that she was afraid of passing through it at night,” Zhang said. He then decided to paint some cute cartoons in one of the alley’s walls. “In this way she won’t be afraid to walk through it,” he thought.

The 30-year-old artist got started after this year’s Spring Festival. In his free time, he would spend 12 hours a day painting on the wall. He has now done enough painting to cover 30 meters of the alley’s walls.

Zhang’s girlfriend now has a new job and no longer needs to walk though the old alley. But he plans to finish the alley’s remaining (剩下的) 200 meters. It will take him about a year.

Passers-by (行人) often stop to watch him painting on the wall. They all praise him for his skill. “I want to keep doing this because of these people. I want more people to see my work. I want these cute paintins on the wall to light their way home,” Zhang said.

Amy Jandrisevits knows the value of a good doll. She used to work as a social worker in a children’s hospital in the United States. She often used dolls to help young parents feel more hopeful. “Dolls have a power we don’t completely understand,” she once said.

Seven years ago, a friend told Jandrisevits that she had difficulty picking out a doll for her daughter. That was because the girl had a scar (疤痕) on her face. “It’s hard to tell a kid, ‘You are perfect the way you are,’ but never offer her anything that looks like her,” the friend said.

Jandrisevits decided to change that. She made a special doll by hand. The doll resembled her daughter. It also had a scar on its face. After the friend posted a photo of the happy girl and doll online, another mother came to Jandrisevits for help. Her son had a missing leg and she wanted a special doll, too.

Word spread. Soon, Jandrisevits was making dolls for children with scars, birthmarks and facial deformities (畸形) — in short, dolls that looked like them. She started a nonprofit (非营利组织), A Doll Like Me.

Jandrisevits works from her home. She designs her dolls according to photos from parents or caregivers. The woman spends about seven hours making each doll.

So far, Jandrisevits has made more than four hundred dolls. The waiting list is long, but she has never considered stopping the project. “Every single kid,” she said, “should be able to look into the sweet face of a doll and see his or her own.”

Flying Heroes Are Coming!

You are hiking (远足) in a forest, and you are injured. What do you do now? You can use your cellphone to call for help.      ▲      Luckily, in the near future, a real hero will quickly fly in to save you.

Great North Air Ambulance Service is a British charity (慈善机构). It provides helicopter rescues (直升机救援). Recently, the charity has been testing its jet suits (喷气式飞行服) in the Lake District National Park. These suits can help rescuers to find hard-to-reach patients faster.

The jet suit has two mini engines on each arm and a large engine on the pilot’s back. All movements (动作) are controlled by the pilot. The suit can provide 144 kilograms of thrust (推力). This allows the pilot to travel at a speed of more than 50 kilometers per hour. And the person can fly for up to ten minutes.

During one test, it took 25 to 35 minutes for a helicopter to reach a “patient” in the park. A rescuer in the jet suit, however, was able to fly in to help the “patient” in only 90 seconds. While flying, the pilots have to carry heavy medical equipment (设备). The pilots must be trained to find their balance in flight. The team is now busy training and preparing their flying heroes!

It was July 16. Yan Hongsen was visiting a planetarium (天文馆) in Lhasa with his father. When he was watching an educational film, the nine-year-old boy noticed a few mistakes. He felt angry and asked those questions.

Yan’s father shared this story online. It soon got a lot of attention. People praised the boy for his knowledge of China’s rockets. They called him the “Rocket Boy”.

When yan was four years old, he visited the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (酒泉卫星发射中心) with his family. The boy watched a rocket take off into the sky with his own eyes. He was so excited that he jumped up and down. At that every moment, a dream took root in his mind. He wanted to build his own rocket. To support their son, Yan’s parents bought him many books. They also took him to space museums around China. The boy keeps learning about space science, and shows great interest in astronomy (天文学). In order to work out some difficult problems, he has fallen in love with physics and chemistry.

Yan has two idols (偶像). One is the famous astronomer Nan Rendong. The other is Qian Xuesen, the “father of Chinese Rocketry”. The boy hopes that one day, he can be as great as them. The dream is big, but it isn’t impossible. For Yan and many other hard-working Chinese kids, the sky’s the limit!
