Recently, people in Brittany, France were shocked by a wild duck. The duck seemed to live a perfectly normal life though he was having a knife stuck in its neck.
People called the duck Donald. He had a red knife handle (柄) sticking out of the left side of his neck. What really shocked those who saw the wild duck was how unaffected (未受影响的) he seemed by the knife handle. He was swimming with other ducks and able to feed normally. People couldn’t believe that.
However, people worried that the knife could become a serious problem with time, so they decided to take it out. Because Donald was in excellent physical shape despite the knife handle, on March 31, people succeeded in catching him. They sent him to the hospital. Gestures (手势) are used to replace words in many countries. They usually have different meanings in different cultures. ▲
What does the “O” gesture mean?
If you are an English speaker or diving under the sea, it means“OK” or “good”. In fact, it’s believed that this gesture is widely used by divers. The Japanese read it as “money”. The French read it as “zero” or“no value”.
What does the “thumb (拇指) -u” gesture mean?
This gesture also means differently in different countries. English speakers use it to stand for “O”, which is the same meaning as the “O” gesture. To most people, it stands for the number “1”, beginning with the thumb for 1 and ending with the little finger for the number 5. Although Americans and British people usually ask for a ride with their thumbs raised, the gesture will not make a Greek driver stop to give them a ride.
What does it mean to stretch out your forefinger (食指)?
Extending (伸展) the forefinger means different things in different countries. The Chinese stretch their forefingers upward to indicate the number. It can refer to integers (整数) such as “one”, “one thousand”, etc. In Japan, use this gesture when asking the other person to wait. In Australia, in bars and restaurants, the forefinger is extended upward, saying, “A glass of beer (啤酒), please.” In the Middle East, it is impolite to point at something with your forefinger.
