What is Beidou? Beidou is a navigation(导航) satellite(卫星) system. It is developed by China. China is the third country in the world to have its own navigation satellite system. With Beidou, China no longer has to depend on foreign systems. This is very important for national safety.
The research and development of Beidou began in 1994. However, the first two Beidou satellites were not sent into space until 2000. Since then, China has launched(发射) dozens of(数十个) Beidou satellites. These satellites have formed a global network. Now, China is further improving the system. The BDS-3 system was fully completed in June, 2020, with the successful launch of the last satellite.
The Beidou Navigation Satellite System will be more powerful than any other navigation satellite system in the world. Yang Changfeng is a designer of Beidou. He said the system can notice the sway(晃动) of a building in strong winds.
Beidou has brought much benefit(益处) to our lives. In many cities, thousands of buses have been using Beidou. When we are waiting for a bus, we can know when it is about to come. Many smart phones have also been using Beidou. Many people say, “Let me turn on my GPS.” In fact, their phones are using Beidou.

As we all know, in ancient times, people communicated with others who were far away only by writing letters. It took a very long time to get the message.
In the 19th century, telegraph was invented, but it was not widely used. The letter was still the commonest way at that time. In 1836, John Coker invented the first electromagnetic telegraph (电磁电报机) in the world, and then telegraph came into being and was popular. It was much faster than letters, bringing great convenience to people.
As time goes by, telephones become increasingly widely used. Now, phones have been developed as mobile phones, fixed telephones, Internet telephones and other categories. They are important communication tools in modern information society.
In addition, network communication is popular as well. It is especially widely welcomed by the youth. A great number of people communicate with others on the Internet by using software (软件), such as QQ, Wechat, BBS and MMS. Using software is easy. A computer which is connected to the network is enough. In China, Wechat has become the most popular communication software nowadays. Wechat, known as Weixin in China, is a mobile phone text and voice messaging communication software which is developed by Tencent. People who make video calls can not only hear the sound, but also see the people they talk to.

As Earth’s neighbor, Mars (火星) has a similar environment to Earth. For years, scientists try their best to study the Mars and hope that people can live on it one day. So China has named the nation’s first Mars rover (火星车) Zhu Rong and sent it on Mars successfully in May 2021. For all of us, Zhu Rong is a well-suited name.
In an ancient Chinese story, Zhu Rong had the face of a man and the body of an animal. He rode on two dragons. When he had a big fight with Gong Gong, the god of water, Zhu Rong won. But after the fight, the human world came into complete darkness. Then he brought fire from heaven (天国) to the world
“Zhu Rong is regarded as the earliest god of fire in traditional Chinese culture.” A space official said, “The first Mars rover was named Zhu Rog. The named stands for light and hope for space exploration in our country, and means to guide humans to continue exploration.”
After leaving the earth last summer, Zhu Rong circled Mars for several months and landed on it in May. In recent years, our country has sent up the world’s first quantum satellite (量子卫星), and Chang’e-4 has made a soft landing on the moon. We have made great progress in space technology and will soon start building our own space station.

Drones (无人机)
Drones have played a major role in disinfection (消毒). Police officers also use them to spread the latest information. What's more, they use drones to remind people to wear masks or warn them not to gather in large groups.
Robots
Robots are good helpers on the frontlines. They do many tasks in hospitals, including sending medicine or meals, doing disinfection and measuring patients' body temperature. This not only greatly reduces the burden for medical workers, but also prevents the cross-infection (交叉感染).
Mini-programmes
Different mini-programmes, or apps that you don't need to download but can use on Wechat, have also come to help. For example, you can check whether you have unknowingly travelled alongside infected patients. Community workers can collect information about people more easily with the help of mini-programmes.
Health QR codes (健康码)
People in more than 100 cities can get their own health QR codes by applying through Alipay or Wechat. This way, they don't have to fill in information like their names, ages and living addresses over and over again when they enter public places.

A report in a newspaper says that school accidents, such as food poisoning (中毒), fires, electricity and traffic, kill more primary and middle school students than anything else. So we must learn how to protect ourselves better. Here are some tips for keeping safety in mind every day.
On our way home or to school: Wait for the green traffic light, and look left and right before we cross the road. We’d better wear bright-color clothes, so the drivers can see us easily. Don’t believe strange people in the street.
At school: When students around us begin to push each other, we need to stand still and try to hold onto something, or stay in a corner until the crowd leaves. If we fall down in a moving crowd, use both hands to cover the head. Lean to one side, curl up (蜷缩) our body and bend (使弯曲) the legs.
In a fire: Stay calm. Leave the classroom quickly under the directions of the teachers. Smoke can be more dangerous than fire, so use a piece of cloth to cover our mouth and nose. What will we do if the clothes burn? Remember not to run! Drop and fall to the ground. Then roll! It will make the fire go out.
For eating: Wash fruits carefully before eating them. Check the expiration dates (保质期) on the packages of the snacks, and if it looks or smells bad, don’t eat it.

This year, we saw three Chinese astronauts go to space. They had spacewalks. Spacewalks can be dangerous. There is harmful radiation(辐射)and there is no air at the space station. Thanks to Feitian spacesuit, astronauts can stay safe.
Let’s get to know about Feitian spacesuit. It has six layers(层). Layer 1 is the closest to astronauts’ bodies. It collects astronauts’ urine(尿液). Layer 2 to 5 help to control temperature and pressure(压力) inside the suit. Layer 6 protects astronauts from radiation.
Feitian spacesuit weighs(重) more than 120 kilograms. It fits astronauts from 160 to 180 centimeters tall. Astronauts can put it on within (在……之内)5 minutes. It can support spacewalks as long as 8 hours.
There is a camera in the suit. Astronauts can take pictures before they jump in the icy water on that day during spacewalk. There are headphones and speakers in it. Astronauts can talk to the space station.

Tianwen 1 (天问一号) is China’s first Mars probe (火星探测器). Where does the name come from? Do you still remember Qu Yuan, a famous poet in ancient China? He loved his motherland very much. His long poem “Heavenly Questions (天问)”expresses the continual hard work and the great spirit of the Chinese nation to science. That is why Tianwen 1 was officially named, which is quite cultural and beautiful.
On July 14, 2020. Tianwen 1 arrived at the Wenchang Space Launch Site (发射站) in Hainan Province. The space probe Tiamwen 1 was sent into space at 12:41 p. m. on July 23, 2020. It took Tianwen 1 about seven months to travel to Mars.
China’s Mars rover (火星车), Zhurong(祝融), named after the Chinese god of fire, landed safely on Mars on May 15, 2021, making China the second country in history to have a rover on Mars.
