Every year, on the second Saturday in September, people celebrate World First Aid Day. It’s a day to raise awareness (意识) about how important first aid is. Technology not only makes our lives more convenient. it can also save lives. Let’s look at some technological inventions that are helping save lives.
Smart app
If someone needs first aid, even if you call an ambulance straight away, you may need to wait a while. There is often traffic on the roads. Some people in the US made an app called PulsePoint. It invites ordinary people trained in CPR (心肺复苏术) to use it. The app knows the users’ locations. If someone needs first aid nearby, a user will get a message asking them to help.
Magic gel
The gel (凝胶) called Vetigel is magic! It can stop someone bleeding in just 10 seconds, said the website Medical Device Network, The gel is made from plants. It can stick to a wound and help seal (密封) it. It was invented more than 10 years ago but was only allowed to be used on animals. Now in the US, it has been allowed to be used on humans, too. And get this: according to CGTN, the person from the US was only 17 years old when he invented it!
Flying aid
If people get injured or need help in hard-to-reach areas, drones (无人机) can be of great use. Because they can fly, drones can often offer help faster than people. And they can also make helping people safer for rescuers working in dangerous conditions. The drones can have a camera that can watch your health. They can also carry useful things, like blankets or a life vest (救生衣) to save someone from drowning (溺水).

7 . Do you remember a time when people were a little nicer, a little softer with each other? I certainly do, and I feel that much of the world has got away from that. I see such a difference in New York City, for example, from the time I first moved here more than 20 years ago: people now rush into lifts without giving those inside a chance to get off first, never say “thank you” when others hold a door open for them, or “please” when they want a classmate to hand them something. We get lazy, and we think that something like a simple “thank you” doesn’t really matter. But in fact it can matter much. It is that no matter how nicely we dress, how beautifully we decorate our homes, or how lovely our dinner parties are, we can’t be really stylish (漂亮的) without good manners.
In fact, I think of good manners as a kind of hidden beauty. Haven’t you noticed that the kindest, most generous people seem to keep getting more beautiful? They become Cary Grant or Lauren Bacall right before our eyes. It’s funny how that happens, but it does.
Take the long-lost art of saying “thank you” for example. Like wearing a little lipstick (口红) or making sure your hair is neat (整洁的), getting into the habit of saying “thank you” can make you feel better about yourself, and then you will look better to everyone around you.

A.really stylish | B.very lazy | C.quite funny | D.rather foolish |
A.art | B.fun | C.secret | D.generosity (慷慨) |
A.we should get on well with everyone around |
B.one should make it a habit to be polite to others |

9 . People recently expressed great surprise at a map. It is a map filled with lots of marks that show our country’s cultural relics and historic sites (文物和历史遗址). The map was made by Wu Yunjie, a young man born in the 1990s.
Wu is crazy about our country’s cultural relics and has a deep interest in history. When he was in college, he often traveled around our country. He recorded ancient sites during his trips.
In 2020, Wu started to make the amazing map. He faced many difficulties. Some information was not easy to get and many old sites were hard to find. But Wu enjoyed his work and believed it was worthwhile (值得做的).
Now, the map Wu made includes nearly 10,000 marks of historic sites. They are of different colors. Red marks show the sites protected by the country, while green ones stand for the sites protected by local governments. Many ancient buildings and bridges are also marked on the map.
People on the Internet love the map. They can enjoy many famous ancient buildings. “I actually found the ancient tower around my house on the map!” one person wrote online.
However, we see room for improvement in his map, as it only covers a small part of all the historic sites in our country and it can’t be shared as an online map yet because of technological problems. Wu is trying to make his map perfect. “If possible, I’d also like to add the cultural relics that have been lost overseas. Those treasures may not be able to return to their homeland at present, but the stories that they carry are what we need to see,” Wu said.

10 . These days, we easily feel stressed as we need to do lots of work every day. It’s important to know how to solve problems and find ways to relax.
We should try organizing our problems from most important to least important as well as most urgent (紧急的) to least urgent. If some problems are both important and urgent, such as studying for a next-day test, do those tasks first. Once those are done, work on things that are important but not urgent, such as preparing for the final exams. From there, we can work on problems that are less important. Organizing our work this way helps a lot in knowing what to do first and not worrying about the rest.
Sometimes we feel stressed because we are not able to complete the task by ourselves. It’s better to ask someone for help. If we stick to doing these tasks ourselves, it can make us more stressed and upset. Open your mouth bravely, and someone must give you a hand.
Still, sometimes we don’t feel relaxed even after organizing our work well. That’s okay. We can try to plan some exercise in our daily life. It doesn’t even have to be a big trip to the gym, although that surely helps. It could be something as small as walking around the neighborhood for 10 minutes. Also, we can try different activities together with our family members or friends.
We can try meditation (冥想). Again, this does not need to be anything special. Just set aside 10to 20 minutes with a timer, sit upright, close your eyes, and focus only on breathing. If other ideas come up, accept that they are there and let them fall away on their own.
By trying these steps, we will go a long way toward feeling relaxed and peaceful when finishing all of the work.
