Everybody has a favorite TV show. Some people like to watch cartoons, other people like to watch soap operas. Now reality TV shows are very popular in many countries. Reality TV shows have no actors. The stars are real people like you and me.

One of the most famous ones is Survivor (《幸存者》). In Survivor, sixteen people try to win one million dollars. For ten weeks they live together far away from home. Their life is very hard. They have to sleep outside and find their own food. There are many games and tests. If they fail a test, they might have to leave the show. “Survivor” is very popular. In America, 51 million people watched the last show to see who would win.

Is it good to watch a lot of TV? In Britain, most children watch more than three hours every day, and 66 percent of children have a TV in their bedroom. Some people think that watching too much TV is unhealthy for children because it stops them doing exercise. They say that children should read books or go outside and play. They also think that watching cartoons that show a lot of violence (暴力) is bad for young people.

But now some scientists say that watching TV can be good. They found that children who watch TV before an exam can get higher grades. This is because TV helps them to relax before the exam. It also exercises their brains, but remember: NOT TOO MUCH!

Good Ways to Spend My Free Time

As we know, we have more free time after school now. But what are the good ways to spend it?

My name is Bob. This summer I went to Shimla and Manali with my family.

After we arrived at Manali on the first day, we lived in a cheap hotel. The next day we were very excited to visit Manali. After delicious breakfast at the hotel, we went on sightseeing tours in the city. We were very surprised to see the fantastic and beautiful nature with high mountains and thick forests around. Then we visited some other places of interest.

The third day after breakfast we went to Rohtang Pass, about 51 kilometers away from Manali. It was really beautiful and we enjoyed a lot by watching the beautful Himalayas. Then we visited Solang Valley.

The fourth day we went to Shimla by car. After we got there, we had a good sleep at the hotel and woke up in the early morning with the excitement of Shimla tours. After breakfast we visited Shimla. We visited lots of attraction (有吸引力的地方).

The fifth morning we went to Chandigarh Railway Station by car. We took the train to Delhi and returned to our home with the sweet and nice memories of Shimla and Manali tours.

Food is very important for our body. Everyone needs to eat well if he or she wants to have a strong body. There are many kinds of healthy food. You can have more bananas, apples, oranges, tomatoes and cabbages because fruit and vegetables are good for you.

Remember there is a saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” But don’t eat too much junk food. It’s not healthy food. Many children love junk food. It’s bad for their health. Their parents don’t want them to eat too much junk food. Although they know it’s not a good habit, they still eat this kind of food. Some of them eat it every day. Some eat it only once or twice a week.

Sports can also keep you healthy besides（除了）healthy food. The body also needs xercise. Walking, running, jumping, swimming and playing ball games are all exercise. if you want to be healthy, please eat healthy food and do sports.

An Interesting Survey

Last week, I did a survey about favorite TV shows at No.2 Middle School. Some students’ answers are interesting.

Li Yu’s favorite shows are sports shows. He often watches basketball games on CCTV5. And he likes Lebron James best. Liu Yuan, a 13-year-old girl, says she can’t stand Beijing Opera. But it’s her grandmother’s favorite. Liu Yuan loves cartoons very much. She watches Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf every day. She thinks cartoons are interesting and relaxing. Sun Jing doesn’t mind game shows. Lin Hui likes talk shows. She thinks she can learn more about life from them.

And there is another interesting thing. Most moms like Healthy Living but most dads like news.

Chen Xue, a woman from Liaoning, listens to her favorite singer’s songs over and over every morning. This helps his rankings（排名）on QQ Music. Chen, along with 1,000 other people of a fan club, has also spent lots of money buying the singer’s songs, Xinhua reported.

This is a kind of fan culture, or “fan quan” culture, in China. Fan quan are highly organized groups of loyal（忠实的）fans. They use their time and money to make their “idols”, usually pop singers or actors, as popular as possible.

These people blindly（盲目地）follow their idols. Most of them attack（攻击）or even bully（欺侮）others online. They sometimes spread rumors（谣言）about other stars. To buy expensive gifts for their idols, they collect money in fan clubs. Some fans even steal their parents’ money to do so.

In June, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) started an action called “Clear and Bright”（清朗行动）to clean up online fan clubs. With this action, our Internet will get cleaner and friendlier.

What Would You Do is a TV program on American ABC. The program which is hosted by the news reporter John Quinones is popular with many people. It tests what people will do when they see someone is in trouble in order to remind us to stand up for the people in need. Here is last week’s program.

In a cake shop, two actors acted as a blind woman named Pamela and a man clerk who looked down upon the blind. Hidden cameras were recording what would happen. The blind woman came into the shop and bought a box of twelve cup cakes. The clerk treated the woman badly at first. Then he cheated her when he gave her the change. He only gave her 6 single dollar bills instead of 34 dollars.

Would someone be brave enough to stand up for the blind woman? Yes! A customer(顾客) in the cake shop stopped the clerk from cheating the blind and treating her badly. And other customers joined in soon. John appeared in the end and interviewed the first customer who helped Pamela out. She said it was necessary to give a hand to the people in need. “A psychology(心理学) professor once said,” she said, “It’s difficult to take the first step to stand up. It needs courage.”

For the students in this age, they may have some psychological(心理上的) problems. Here are the reasons.

Recently, a study published (发表) in BMC Medicine, found that sitting in front of the TV for a long time was a risk for people’s health.

After scientists used data (数据) on 370,000 people, covering 12 years, they found about 9,000 developed heart disease. They found people with genes (基因) of heart problems were more likely to develop heart disease. However, they found that people without such genes watching more than four hours of TV every day were also at the greatest risk of heart disease. People spending 2 to 3 hours a day watching TV had a 6% lower risk. And those who watched less than an hour had a 16% lower risk. The scientists of the research team finally found cutting TV watching time to less than an hour a day could prevent 10% of heart disease.

In life, people who want to watch more TV programs might be the group at a higher risk, for they are easy to spend more time watching TV. If they have more snacks while watching TV, it might add the risk of putting their hearts in danger. So, if people want to watch TV longer, standing up and moving the body, or hanging out will work. But limiting their time on TV could be a more useful way to help them avoid possible heart problems in the future.
