8 . What will you do during a trip? Visit famous places, shop and take photos? There is one thing you should never forget—send a postcard.
Postcards have 170 years of history in the UK. By the 20th century, trains became a cheap and easy way to travel. More people went on holiday to the seaside. There were no cell phones, so they sent postcards to let others know they arrived safely. Those postcards were usually seaside pictures, such as beaches and traditional food like fish and chip.
Today, most postcards show local scenic photos or drawing. Others may be funny, with jokes on the front.
People usually write words to express “They miss someone” on their postcards. It’s common to end with “thinking of you”. The most famous postcard words are “wish you were here”.
Modern postcards also celebrate British humor. They often make fun of the British weather. For example, some postcards show the rain pouring down on an empty beach. This humor keeps postcards popular in Britain.

Trips to the moon are being made every day. Taking a holiday on the moon today is as easy as taking a holiday in Europe in the 2010s. At a number of scenic spots (风景胜地) on the moon, many hotels have been built. In order that everyone can enjoy the beautiful scenery on the moon, every room has at least one picture window. Everything imaginable is provided for entertainment of the young and old.
What are people eating now? People are still eating food. But a lot of food now comes in pill (药片) form, and the food that goes into the pill comes mainly from green plants.
Because people in the world today are much more than those about fifty years ago, most of the earth's surface has to be filled. The deserts are irrigated with water and crops are no longer eaten by pests (害虫). The harvest is always good. Farming, of course, is very highly developed. Very few people have to work on the farms. It is possible to run the farms by just using a few computers.
People are row largely vegetarians, and they eat only bread, vegetables, fruit and so on and they don’t eat meat or fish. You see, as the number of people increases, the number of animals decreases. 10 . Technology and Books
What did people read before books and e-books? People started writing thousands of years ago. They cut pictures in stones. They wrote marks on wet clay (泥土). In Egypt, people wrote on papyrus (草纸) for other people to read. Papyrus was made from reeds (芦苇) that grew along the river. Papyrus was rolled up into a scroll (卷轴).
Hundreds of years ago, people started using parchment (羊皮纸). It was made from sheepskin. Pages of parchment were made into a book. Much later, books were made of paper. Every book had to be written out by hand. Then, in about the year 1455, Johannes Gutenberg made a printing press. It printed copies of a book more quickly.
E-books appeared around 1998. The letter “e” stands for electronic (电子的). You store and read e-books on an electronic device (设备). E-books use computer technology.
