2 . Seventy years ago, Jiang Minci’s parents wanted her to marry a rich man. She was young and wanted to continue (继续) her studies. So she refused and left home to study at a school in Hunan Province. Jiang, now 89, who lives in Guangzhou, shared her story on the video sharing website Bilibili earlier this year. To her surprise, the 24-minute video about “how young people changed their lives 70 years ago” received hundreds of thousands of likes. She is now China’s oldest uploader (上传者) and one of the most popular users on Bilibili.

“I’ve always wanted to write down my life stories, but I’m not good at writing,” Jiang said. She saw her grandson Dou Dou editing videos and decided to record her life through videos. She asked him to teach her how to film and post videos online and opened her Bilibili account (账号) at the end of April, naming it Minci bu lao (It means Minci is not old).

Before she begins recording, Jiang carefully writes down the topics she wants to share in her videos. Jiang said, “Making and posting videos online has now become a great joy in my life, and has made it more colorful.” In her videos, she talks about her childhood and her life stories and experiences.

“I enjoy communicating with young people. I was really happy when they started enjoying my videos. And I’m glad that my stories can help them better understand how life was in the past and how the country has developed (发展),” Jiang said.

3 . What’s a blog? A blog is a personal online diary. It’s cool, it’s hot, and everyone is doing it. People talk about it often. Sound like a fashion? In fact, it’s another trend. And the word “blogger” means a person who writes diaries online. Are you a blogger?

Many bloggers are teenagers who log onto websites to discuss anything in their lives. Many of today’s teenagers are not afraid to openly discuss everything in their lives. Teenagers complain about their parents and homework. They share diaries, post songs from the latest bands and show pictures of theirs. They write their own poems, say something about their friends and complain to each other or offer support. But mostly they just write down what they do every day.

At present, many parents are worried about these young bloggers. Parents see the kids talking about how they got drunk last weekend and how they don’t like studying. They are using the language that is surprising to their parents. Besides hearing from their friends, teen bloggers also get messages from strangers. Most of the time, it’s older men asking to meet teenage girls. “These strange men are dangerous for my kids. They sometimes teach my kids bad words,” said Cara Cabral, a mother of two children.

Many teenagers and young adults know it’s not safe to use blogs on the Internet. They know they are putting information about themselves in a place where it can be seen by anyone. But teenagers are unwilling to give up these new communication tools that have become a way of life for many of them.

4 . While the mobile Internet is changing the way we live, more and more old people in China are getting into the digital（数字的）world.

Yang Su, a 61-year-old micro vlogger（短视频博主）, has more than 2.3 million followers on China’s famous short video app Douyin. “Two and a half years ago, my son put a short video of me playing the piano at home on Douyin, and hours later it was played over 1 million times,” Yang remembered.

After finishing his studies in the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, he became a pianist. With the development of the Internet, he walked into a new world. He filmed over 600 short videos and opened an official account（公众号）on WeChat to share articles and offer online piano lessons.

However, do other old people get used to the digital world like Yang? Ding Qiulin is a 73-year-old man from Hunan. “I got my smartphone more than one year ago, but I only use WeChat for video calls,” he said. Ding finds it hard to learn to use other apps.

Luckily, younger people are building a bridge between the digital world and the old. Luo Xu, a post-90s volunteer, joined a non-profit（非盈利的）group in Beijing nine years ago to teach old people how to use the Internet. “I feel really happy and proud when I see people aged between 50 and 90 years old use the Internet by themselves,” Luo said.

In August, two Chinese internet celebrities（网红）, vlogger Li Ziqi and live-streamer Viya, have become members of the All-China Youth Federation（中华全国青年联合会）.

With nearly 12 million followers on YouTube, Li Ziqi, is one of the most famous vloggers in China. The 30-year-old has even built a strong fan group across the world. She started making videos about traditional Chinese foods and village life in 2016. For example, in one of her videos, she shows how she made spicy tofu from growing the soybeans to cooking it. Her videos have few words or conversations, but through her videos, she lets the world know Chinese people’s daily lives and love for Chinese culture, which have captured the hearts of her global fans. Even though Li Ziqi has high popularity now, she still lives a simple life.

Meanwhile, Viya, 35, has been a popular face in China’s network marketing. Her followers call her the “Queen of Goods”. She sells everything from foods to houses. In 2019, she helped sell 119-million-yuan products from China’s poorer places altogether! She has also given a lot of money to 37 schools in poor villages. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, she has donated more than 4 million yuan to Wuhan. She even sold a rocket on Taobao on April Fool’s Day in 2020, which surprised the nation and attracted international publicity. These years, short videos become more and more popular. Many people create and share (分享) short videos     1     popular video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. A 12-year-old user named Elsa has about 2.7 million fans on Tik Tok. The girl has shared her dancing studies on Tik Tok since last July. One of the videos won her about one million fans.“I feel really glad to share happiness with people by short videos,” said Elsa.

To some other young people, they use short videos to have a quick look at the hot programs. “Because I don’t like to spend many hours watching a whole program, I hate waiting for a program to end, and I prefer to watch short videos of wonderful parts of hot programs,” said Wang Zhihao.

However, some young people feel bored with short videos.“Killing time is the main reason for me to watch short videos, and many short videos are almost the same, so I think they are not so useful or interesting. What’s more, I really don’t like the videos about strange and dangerous things,” said Wen Nan, another college student.

Recently, something else has appeared. Some videos are telling people what commodities are worth buying. Some short videos even sell bad commodities, and it is hard for customers to get their money back. So we should think twice before we want to buy the commodities by short videos.
