Christopher Nolan’s latest film, Oppenheimer (《奥本海默》), reached American cinemas at the end of this July and proved to be more than worth the wait. It tells the story of Oppenheimer,     1     American scientist who headed the development of atomic bombs (原子弹). It is also a movie about the terrible power of science and man’s dangerous intelligence. As soon as the film     2     (show), it won the hearts of     3     (million) of fans. Here are some reviews from them.

Mr. Brown: Oppenheimer is one of     4     (fantastic) films I have ever seen. While going deep into the difficult task of creating atomic bombs, I find     5     a clever and brave scientist Oppenheimer is, and I understand Oppenheimer’s drive for success. I would say it is a film you don’t merely watch, but must think about. I     6     (strong) advise you to watch it and I believe you will learn a lot from him.

Mr. Green: To make the art of the film perfect, Nolan tried so hard     7     everyone could have the pleasure of experiencing from this film in IMAX screen. Also, the special sound effects and music make the film a victory. In a word, everything in the film is special and different     8     other films.

Falling down in public is not welcomed for most people. However, can you believe that people fall down for something fun and meaningful?

Our graduation (毕业) party was coming soon, and the girls started talking about their graduation presents. Everyone seemed to get a graduation present.

I also expected to get one. I had seen a beautiful pink dresser set at Mr. Schiller’s store. I dropped hint (暗示) after hint in front of Mama, until Nels, my brother, reminded me, “Katrin, we do not have money for that kind of thing.”

“I don’t care,” I cried recklessly, “I must have a graduation present.”

Nels got impatient and said he thought I was turning into a spoiled brat (被宠坏的孩子).

When Mama and I were alone one day, she asked me how I would like her silver brooch (胸针) for a graduation present. Mama thought a lot of that brooch, because it had been her mother’s. Grandmother had left us for a long time, and Mama always kept the brooch on her dress. I shook my head and told her what I wanted. Mama looked worried, but she didn’t say anything.

Graduation night was a flurry of excitement. And when I got home, there was the pink dresser set! Mama and Papa beamed at my delight, but Nels seemed not. He followed me to my room.

“Are you happy now?” Nels said, “Ask Mama what she did with her silver brooch.”

I looked at Nels with horror. “What? You mean...did Mama...?” he just walked away. I grabbed up the dresser set and ran down the stairs to the kitchen. Papa was there.

“Papa, oh, Papa!” I cried. “Did Mama...Nels says ________” I started to cry then.

“There now,” he said, and patted my shoulder. “There now.”

“I never wanted Mama to do that, Papa. If I had known... I would never have let her...”

“It was what Mama wanted to do. Mama had wanted your happiness more than she had wanted the silver brooch, Katrin.”

I stood up slowly. I knew what I must do. I went to Mr. Schiller’s store. I begged Mr. Schiller that I would come in and worked for him every single day, even Saturdays only if he agreed to call the deal off.

At last, I walked out of Mr. Schiller’s store not only with Mama’s brooch, but with a job that started the next morning. I felt proud. The dresser set suddenly seemed like a childish and silly thing.

How do people think differently? This has always been unusual. To search an answer, a scientist named J. P. Guilford started a famous study of creativity in the 1970s, known as the nine-dot puzzle (九点谜题). He asked the participants (参与者) to connect all nine dots using only four straight lines, without lifting their pencils from the page. All the participants looked for solutions within the square they imagined. Only 20 percent managed to break out of the square and continue their lines in the white space around the dots, while the rest of them were blinded by the boundaries (边界) of the square.

The results of Guilford’s study led him to a conclusion: creativity needs you to go outside the box. The idea was widely spread soon. Overnight, it seemed that creativity experts everywhere were teaching managers how to think outside the box. The idea was so popular that no one thought of checking the facts. No one, that is, before two different research teams— Clarke Burmham with Kenneth Davis, and Joseph Alba with Robert Weisberg—did another experiment.

To make sure that Guilford’s study is correct, both teams divided participants into two groups. The first group was given the same instructions as the participants in Guilford’s experiment. The second group was told to draw the lines outside the imagined box. Guess what? Only a little more than 20 percent solved the puzzle, which is no big difference from the result of Guilford’s experiment.

Let’s look a little more closely at the surprising result. Solving this problem requires people to think outside the box. However, direct and clear instructions to “think outside the box” do not help participants improve their performance. The widely spread idea that out-of-the-box thinking makes people more creative can, in some way, be dangerous. After all, with one simple but brilliant experiment, researchers had proved that the connection between thinking outside the box and creativity was a misunderstanding.
