Last summer, my team and I traveled to a reserve in Indiana for field work. After five hours, we finally arrived. We had been looking forward to this trip for over a year. We decided to stay at a local hotel and walk into the reserve the next day

Upon the information we received at the visitor center the next morning, we ultimately decided to hike on a canyon trail. It was supposed to be a calm day and it was supposed to bean easy job in the reserve. Little did I know that day would become one of the scariest in my life.

To be prepared for our journey, we brought along plenty of water and snacks. We kept moving and were on our way. With the purpose of studying different species, I tried to identify various types of trees and animals. I noticed an unknown creature running away

“Ill catch up with you guys,” I told my teammates. They continued on the path while imindlessly followed the creature. It had a short tail and its coat was a shade of beige (米色) with spots on it, unlike anything I had seen before. After following it fora while, I was able to get a close-up view, and determined it to be a bobcat (短尾猫), which was not friendly to me. When I realized it,it was too late, because I had wandered off the trail.

Never having been in this situation before, I was completely confused. What should I do? Since there was no cell phone reception, I knew calling for help was out of the picture. At this point, I realized I would have to be responsible and get back to the trail. I had to abandon all fears and go in “survival mode” to get to safety. “Help! Help!” I screamed, but the high wind was the only response. Trying to backtrack to my route, I only got deeper into the wilderness

Suddenly, I heard a sound come from behind me.

I had to take action to ensure safety.

6 . During the Gold Rush, merchants needed a faster way to ship their goods to the West, turning every voyage into a race. The current record holder was the Surprise, which had made the New York to San Francisco trip in ninety-six days. Ellen planned to break that record with her ship, the Flying Cloud.

To achieve the goal, Ellen learned to use navigation (航海) instruments and do the complicated math calculations from her captain father. She also studied positioning charts made by Lieutenant Marthew, Ellen’s race against time began on June 2, 1851. It was her responsibility to keep track of the ship’s progress and current position and to plan the best course for it to follow. She chose a course different from the ones ships normally used and the Flying Cloud passed the equator two days less than ever before.

Heading south, when Ellen and the Flying Cloud was about to reach the Cape Horn, powerful wind slammed into the ship, tipping it sideways. Thirty-foot waves crashed over the deck. Ellen knew that the fastest way to get there was through the Strait of Le Maire. But it was risky. The narrow strip of water was only fourteen miles wide with rocky coasts on both sides. It would not be a problem on a clear day. But Flying Cloud was hit with their worst storm yet. Between the blinding snow and the lack of daylight, visibility was cut to almost nothing. Ellen used dead reckoning to plot a course she hoped would take the Flying Cloud toward the entrance to the strait.Finally, when the skies cleared, Ellen was relieved to see that she were right and everyone were safe on board. On July 22, lucky winds pushed the ship through the strait.Finally, at eleven-thirty the morning of August 3l, 185l, Flying Cloud had completed its voyage in eighty-nine days and twenty-one hours, beating Surprise’s record by an entire week.Crowds gathered on the beach to watch Flying Cloud’s arrival. News of the broken record spread quickly, making Ellen an instant celebrity. Her achievements were recognized in newspapers across the country, The success of her voyage required a combination of skill, experience and courage. Luckily, Ellen had them all.

When the Uzbek girl Dilsora firstly met what seemed more like a Western-style dragon than a Chinese one, a beast to run away from her rather than a friend to be respected, she was at a loss about it. “Before college, I caught an interview on TV featuring an Uzbek student studying in China, she tweeted. However, I didn’t have the slightest idea that this language would be my future major in college. Then, when I started studying it at college, oh, jeez …pretty challenging! ” Nevertheless, as with a dragon story, there is a twist in the tail, and Dilsora’s despair gave way to nobler principles. “Give up? Nope! Instead, I pressed on with Chinese. ” she added with a giggle, “My mother also encouraged me all the way! ”

Gradually, her feelings toward Chinese changed in the second year of college after Dilsora got a scholarship to study at Northeast Normal University in Changchun for a year, which proved a big turn on the pages of her fulfilling life.

“The first time I came to China, amazingly engaging were the locals, by whom I was totally fascinated. In spite of myself, I fell in love with Chinese culture. ” Since then she has got master's and doctoral degrees, becoming a college teacher in Beijing, teaching Uzbek to Chinese students. In her spare time, being an all-nighter, she often loses herself in Chinese masterpieces. Two years later, on Instagram, she even set up a Chinese Reading Club to attract more to read.

“Although I am ordinary, ” just as she, now the boss of the Reading Club, matter-of-factly put it, “since I’ve come this far, I am to come further. Harvesting the best outcome is my lasting dream. ” Those primary schoolers hearing the tale of Dilsora devoting so much to Chinese learning might be several times more likely to learn Chinese hard than those who didn’t, as Jimu news staff predicted.

Besides, Dilsora has answered another calling: translating books by Chinese president into Uzbek. She said the leader’s foresight has impressed her greatly.

10 . It came as a surprise for me to discover a passion for ballet 15 years after I initially started training. I was _________ at the passion since I can’t point out what led to my _________ to start classes—a desire to get out of the house, a need to _________ my body again, but I can see who helped me spark a(n)_________ for the art. It was a group of adults that I ended up taking classes with.
